The Cool Four-Patch Runner is an easy batik table-runner project measuring 16-1/2 by 64-1/2 inches when finished. Its pattern uses eight-inch finished Four-Patch blocks and setting squares, making it a practical project for sewing accurate quarter-inch seams.
Finished size and pattern overview
AllPeopleQuilt lists the finished runner at 16-1/2 by 64-1/2 inches. Each Four-Patch block finishes at 8 inches square. The design combines a cool palette of blue, gray and lavender batiks with light-blue accents. The pattern describes the Four-Patch as a basic block for new and experienced quilters and frames the runner as a way to test quarter-inch seam accuracy. It credits inspiration from “Orchard Lane,” designed by Jill Abeloe Mead and quiltmade by Kathleen Williams, using fabric from Timeless Treasures’ Ice collection of Tonga Batiks. Fabric and batting requirements
The pattern’s listed fabric requirements are:
- Assorted blue batiks: four fat quarters or 3/4 yard total.
- Assorted gray batiks: three fat quarters or 1/2 yard total.
- Assorted lavender batiks: three fat quarters or 1/2 yard total.
- Light-blue batik: one fat quarter.
- Blue batik for binding: 1/2 yard.
- Backing fabric: 1-3/8 yards.
- Batting: 23 by 71 inches.
The quantities are the pattern’s stated requirements. If you prefer to choose your own batiks, keep the blue, gray and lavender groupings distinct enough to read clearly in the Four-Patch blocks; the instructions do not prescribe particular prints.

Important cuts and block layout
The piecing fabrics are cut into 4-1/2-inch squares, and the setting squares are cut 8-1/2 inches. For the binding, cut five strips measuring 2-1/2 by 42 inches. The larger setting squares are arranged with the blocks in eight rows to form the long runner top.
How the runner is assembled
- Sew the 4-1/2-inch piecing squares into pairs, then join the pairs to make Four-Patch blocks, pressing as directed in the pattern.
- Make three blue-and-gray blocks and five multicolor blocks.
- Arrange the blocks and 8-1/2-inch setting squares in eight rows according to the pattern layout.
- Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.
- Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired.
- Bind the runner with the prepared blue strips.
The pattern leaves the quilting design to the maker; it does not specify a particular motif or method.

- Check that your quarter-inch seams are consistent, since seam accuracy affects the finished dimensions of the blocks.
