A hem gauge helps you measure, fold, and press a fabric edge to a consistent width. For a straight hem, align the gauge with the wrong side of the fabric, fold the raw edge to the chosen marking, press, then move the gauge along the edge and repeat. A double-fold hem takes two turns; a curved hem may need easing stitches before pressing.

Choose the right gauge for the job
A shaped hem gauge has straight and curved edges with markings for common hem widths. It can also help when turning and pressing a hem or adjusting a pattern length, as described by Oregon State University Extension. Markings and heat instructions vary by tool, so check the gauge you own.
For example, the Dritz Ezy-Hem Gauge, item 617, is specified for straight hems from 1/4 to 4 inches and curved hems from 1/4 to 2-1/2 inches. Those ranges apply to that model, not to every hem gauge.

- Keep your work accurate with this versatile gauge
- Sliding measure sets distance for marking hems, tucks, pleats and buttonholes
- Sewing gauge with a sliding marker that will stay in place for repeated marking
A sliding seam gauge is a different tool: its movable marker helps repeat short measurements such as seam allowances, hem depths, or buttonhole spacing. Do not iron directly against a conventional sliding gauge unless its manufacturer says it is safe; Dritz describes its Seam Gauge with Point Turner as a measuring tool, not a heat-resistant pressing ruler.
How to use a hem gauge on a straight edge
- Check the pattern for the intended hem depth, or decide on the finished width. Find the matching marking on the gauge.
- Place the gauge against the wrong side of the fabric near the edge. Fold the raw edge to the selected measurement, aligning the fold with the marking.
- Press the fold, following the fabric and gauge care instructions. Move the gauge to the next section, keep the fold at the same measurement, and repeat along the hem.
- For a double-fold hem, turn and press the first allowance, then fold the edge over again to the specified finished width and press. Stitch along the folded edge if the pattern or project instructions call for it.
- Let the pressed fabric cool in place so the crease can set.
In its demonstration, AllPeopleQuilt shows a 1/2-inch first turn followed by a second fold to 1 inch. These are example dimensions, not a universal hem specification; follow the pattern or project instructions.

How to use a hem gauge on a curved edge
A curved edge can leave excess fabric when turned, making the hem buckle or fail to lie flat. For the Dritz Ezy-Hem Gauge, the maker’s instructions recommend sewing a basting line 1/4 inch from the raw edge, turning the fabric along the hemline, and drawing up the stitches every few inches until the turned edge lies flat. Then press with the gauge. Adapt the method to the fabric and the instructions for your particular gauge.
Press safely and protect the fabric
Follow the gauge maker’s heat directions rather than assuming a metal-looking or rigid tool can go under an iron. Dritz advises testing heat and moisture on a fabric sample and warns that its gauge may become hot. If the fabric is prone to water spots, use a pressing cloth.
