Craiyon is a web-based AI image generator and editor, not currently an official native mobile app. It is the renamed successor to DALL·E mini: type a description, choose a style and composition, generate several visual directions, and then iterate, retouch, upscale, remove backgrounds, or use an image as input where your plan allows it.
The free tier makes Craiyon easy to try. Paid Supporter, Professional, and Ultra plans add different combinations of editing credits, premium features, downloads, processing priority, and privacy. The important caveats are that free commercial use requires attribution, Professional privacy does not erase the service’s broad Terms of Use license, and generated images still need human quality and rights review.

Craiyon is a browser-based text-to-image AI service. You describe an image in ordinary language, choose a visual style and, where available, an aspect ratio, and Craiyon generates images from that prompt. It is mainly a web experience rather than a traditional painting app with brushes, layers, and a canvas.
The service is the renamed and substantially evolved successor to DALL·E mini. The project began as DALL·E mini in 2021, while the Craiyon brand was established in 2022. Craiyon is associated with CEO Boris Dayma and says its team develops its own AI image models. Its About page currently claims more than 3 billion images created and more than 1 million monthly active users. Those figures come from Craiyon and are not independently audited market measurements.

The same page displays examples labeled Craiyon v3, v4, and v5, and lists v6 as coming soon. That should not be read as a complete, permanent list of models available to every account: model names, access, and interface features can change.
How Craiyon generates images
At a high level, Craiyon says its models were trained on millions of images collected from the internet and use diffusion-style generation. The process begins with random visual noise and progressively refines it while following the text prompt. This is Craiyon’s general explanation, not a full technical specification of the models currently running in production.

In practical terms, Craiyon interprets several kinds of information at once:
- Subject: what should appear, such as a lighthouse, portrait, cat, spaceship, or landscape.
- Action or pose: what the subject is doing and how it is positioned.
- Environment: the location, time period, weather, and surrounding objects.
- Visual direction: a photograph, oil painting, ink drawing, vector graphic, anime image, or another aesthetic.
- Mood and lighting: soft morning light, dramatic shadows, mist, neon lighting, or a calm palette.
- Composition: close-up, wide shot, overhead view, centered subject, or a particular camera angle.
The result is not a literal illustration of every word. It is a probabilistic interpretation, so small changes in wording can produce substantially different compositions. Craiyon’s own tutorial recommends adding specificity gradually and trying multiple prompt variations instead of treating the first generation as final.
How to use Craiyon
- Write a prompt. Describe the subject, action, setting, style, mood, lighting, and composition you want.
- Choose a style. Craiyon currently advertises Artistic, Photo, Anime, Illustration, Vector, and Raw modes.
- Choose an aspect ratio. Available choices include square, portrait, landscape, or automatic selection where the account and interface support them.
- Optionally complete the Exclude field. Add concepts you would prefer not to see, such as text, people, a particular color, or a visual cliché.
- Generate and inspect the results. Look for problems with anatomy, lettering, object identity, perspective, and unwanted details.
- Iterate. Rewrite the prompt, change the style or composition, retouch an image, or use an image as input for another generation if your plan supports that function.
- Export or continue working. Depending on the interface and plan, you may be able to download, upscale, remove the background, share, search for similar images, or order merchandise.
A useful prompt structure
A practical starting formula is:
[subject] + [action or pose] + [setting] + [style] + [mood and lighting] + [composition or camera angle]
For example:
A weathered red canoe beside a misty lake at dawn, surrounded by tall pines, atmospheric oil painting, muted teal and ochre palette, soft golden backlight, wide landscape composition.
This does not guarantee an oil painting, an accurate canoe, or a correctly composed landscape. It simply gives the model more useful constraints than a short prompt such as beautiful lake. Change one or two elements at a time when iterating so you can tell which wording affected the result.
Craiyon’s styles and controls

Craiyon also supports square, portrait, and landscape compositions. Square is described as the default and available to all users. Portrait and landscape availability depends on the account or plan, and Craiyon also describes automatic aspect-ratio selection based on the prompt or a manually selected ratio.
The Exclude field acts like a negative-prompt control. You can ask Craiyon to avoid concepts such as people, text, specific colors, or common visual clichés. It is a steering mechanism, not a guarantee. An image may still contain an excluded object, an unwanted word, or a related visual element.
Editing and image tools
Craiyon is not limited to one-shot generation. Its current tutorial describes several image-related tools:
- Retouch: Start with a generated image, describe a change in text, and submit the edit. Examples include changing clothing color, changing the artistic style, changing the scene, removing or adding an object, replacing the background, or extending the composition.
- Image input: Use an existing image as the starting point for a new generation or transformation where the interface makes that option available.
- Background removal: Isolate an object or person for product images, portraits, stickers, decals, social-media graphics, and compositing.
- Upscale, Animate, and Vectorize: These are listed among paid-plan features, although exact availability can vary by plan and may change.
- Search and discovery: Browse community creations, categories, trending images, similar images, and prompts associated with images.
- Merchandise: The tutorial explains how users can turn Craiyon images into merchandise, including products such as T-shirts and mugs, where that workflow is available.
Retouching and using an image as input consume edit credits. Text-only image generation does not use those edit credits according to Craiyon’s pricing FAQ.
What can you make with Craiyon?
Craiyon’s documented use cases include logo and branding concepts, product mockups, digital art, fantasy and concept art, anime and manga imagery, event cards, posters, social-media graphics, book covers, illustrations, album or CD covers, merchandise and T-shirt designs, game characters, game environments, architecture, interior concepts, and image editing.
For painters and other visual creatives, its strongest role is rapid exploration rather than finished production. You can use it to explore:
- thumbnail compositions before committing to a canvas;
- color and lighting directions for a scene;
- atmosphere and environment ideas;
- character, costume, prop, and setting concepts;
- reference-like variations for a mood board;
- poster, cover, or social-media layout ideas; and
- background concepts that you later redraw, paint, or refine manually.
Generated images may need substantial correction before professional use. Readable typography, hands, faces, repeated patterns, exact products, branded objects, and complex spatial relationships are especially worth checking rather than assuming they are correct. Craiyon’s materials emphasize iteration and refinement; the dossier does not contain independent testing that would justify a specific accuracy or quality score.

Craiyon offers a free tier and three paid plans: Supporter, Professional, and Ultra. The Craiyon plans and pricing page currently displays annual billing totals of $120 for Supporter, $240 for Professional, and $840 for Ultra, and says annual billing represents a 17% discount. The retrieved pricing page did not provide reliable monthly prices, so those should not be reverse-engineered from the annual totals.

The paid plans are described as including unlimited image generation, monthly edit credits, and access to features such as Animate, Upscale, and Vectorize. The pricing page also presents no-watermark downloads, attribution differences, HD downloads, priority processing, and early access as plan-dependent benefits. Do not assume that every feature applies identically to every paid tier; check the live comparison before subscribing.
How Craiyon credits work
- Text-only generation does not use edit credits.
- Retouching and using an image as input do use edit credits.
- Subscription edit credits refresh monthly on the billing date.
- Unused credits do not roll over.
- Subscribers can continue text-only generation after exhausting edit credits, according to Craiyon’s pricing FAQ.
- Free users may need to upgrade for additional editing functionality.
Craiyon says subscriptions can be upgraded or canceled from account settings and remain active through the end of the paid term. Its pricing FAQ says sales are non-refundable, while also directing users to contact support about problems. These are vendor terms and should be rechecked before purchase.
Can you use Craiyon images commercially?
Craiyon says generated images may be used for personal, academic, or commercial purposes if users follow its Terms of Use. The pricing FAQ says free users must credit Craiyon when using images commercially, while subscribers may use images without attribution. The FAQ directs free users to Craiyon’s logos for the required attribution.

That permission is not the same as a guarantee of copyright ownership, exclusivity, trademark clearance, model-release clearance, or complete legal safety. The Craiyon Terms of Use require compliance with applicable law and prohibit infringement and various abusive or unlawful uses. They also grant Craiyon a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to reproduce, modify, display, perform, sublicense, and distribute prompts and images produced at the user’s direction.

That license is important for anyone working with confidential material. A private-generation setting can reduce public visibility, but it does not by itself cancel or override the broader license language in the Terms of Use.
Before using an output in a paid project, check for:
- recognizable people and possible publicity or privacy rights;
- logos, trademarks, branded products, or distinctive trade dress;
- copyrighted characters, protected designs, or close resemblance to a known work;
- claims that could mislead customers about a real product or person;
- required attribution based on the account tier; and
- your client’s rules about generative AI, disclosure, originality, and confidential inputs.
For commercial creative work, the safest general description is concepting and rapid visual exploration. Human editing and rights review remain necessary.
Privacy: public images are only part of the question
Craiyon’s plan information says Supporter-generated images are public and Professional includes private image generation. That distinction matters when choosing a plan, but public gallery visibility is not the whole privacy analysis.
Craiyon’s privacy disclosures describe the use of cookies, Google Analytics, and other possible analytics or marketing services. They also describe sharing information with affiliated service providers, analytics or advertising providers, or parties involved in transactions such as a merger or sale of assets. Separately, the Terms of Use grant Craiyon the broad license over prompts and generated images described above.
Do not upload unreleased product designs, confidential client briefs, private photographs, personal data, or sensitive business information without first reviewing the current privacy disclosures and contract terms. Professional privacy features may prevent ordinary public display, but they should not be treated as a promise that the service will keep all submitted material outside its contractual rights.
Is there an official Craiyon mobile app?
Craiyon’s current website FAQ says a dedicated mobile app is coming soon. Until Craiyon announces otherwise, describe the official service as primarily browser-based. A separate App Store listing with a similar name identifies a different developer, Dillan Munsters, so it is not evidence of an official Craiyon LLC mobile application.

Does Craiyon have an API?
Not currently as a public official service, according to Craiyon’s pricing FAQ. Craiyon says subscriptions do not include API access and that it does not currently offer a public API, although an API may be offered in the future. Third-party wrappers and unofficial integrations should not be presented as official Craiyon API access.
Limitations and responsible use
Craiyon acknowledges that models trained on internet images can reflect societal biases and stereotypes. Generated scenes may therefore reproduce cultural assumptions, problematic representations, or stereotypes even when the prompt did not request them. Review outputs before publishing or using them in a product.
Other practical limitations include:
- Text and lettering: Do not assume posters, logos, labels, or book covers will contain accurate readable words.
- Exact identity: A prompt for a particular product, person, character, or brand may produce an approximation rather than a reliable depiction.
- Fine details: Hands, faces, repeated objects, small patterns, and architectural structure need inspection.
- Traffic and speed: The free tier may involve waits during high traffic; subscribers receive priority processing.
- Changing behavior: Craiyon says its models improve continuously, so output quality, model labels, limits, and interface controls may change.
- Rights uncertainty: Commercial permission from the service does not eliminate third-party intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, or trademark questions.
If you are comparing results over time, record the date, account tier, selected style, aspect ratio, and any model label shown in the interface. Otherwise, a later change in the service may look like a difference caused by your prompt.
Who should use Craiyon?
Craiyon is a sensible starting point for someone who wants quick visual ideas without installing software or learning a complex image-generation workflow. It is particularly useful for brainstorming compositions, mood boards, fantasy settings, game concepts, cover directions, social graphics, and rough merchandise ideas.
The free tier is suitable for learning and low-stakes experiments if you accept possible waiting, public or limited workflows, and commercial-attribution requirements. Supporter is more suitable for heavier casual use when public visibility is acceptable. Professional is the more defensible choice for work where private image generation matters, though its privacy feature should be read alongside the Terms of Use. Ultra is aimed at users with a substantial volume of image edits, not merely someone who wants to try AI art once.
If your goal is a finished painting, exact brand artwork, dependable typography, or a legally cleared commercial asset, Craiyon should be treated as an exploratory stage rather than the entire production process. Generate directions, select and correct the useful parts, then perform the human editing, fact-checking, and rights review that the final work requires.
