A crane hoists, lowers, and moves a suspended load horizontally; it is not simply a machine for getting painters to a high surface. For painting work, first determine whether the lift is for people, paint and equipment, or another load, then match the equipment and work plan to the job, reach, access, site conditions, and applicable rules. A crane’s type alone does not establish that it is suitable for a particular lift.
What a crane does—and what that means for painters
In U.S. construction rules, OSHA’s crane standard covers power-operated equipment used to hoist, lower, and horizontally move a suspended load, subject to the standard’s scope and exclusions. It covers a broad range of machines, from mobile and tower cranes to overhead and gantry cranes. See 29 CFR 1926.1400 for the scope and equipment list.
On a painting project, a crane might be considered to position materials or equipment, or to support work at height—but those are different tasks. Do not assume that a crane can carry workers, or that a suspended load is an approved work platform. Establish the intended lift and the permitted means of access before choosing equipment; the crane’s label or appearance does not settle that question.
Crane types a painting contractor may encounter
Crane names describe different ways of moving, installing, or supporting equipment. The categories below are useful for orientation, not a capacity ranking or a substitute for a lift plan.

OSHA’s list is a regulatory scope list for covered U.S. construction work, not a universal taxonomy for every industry or jurisdiction. Its crane, derrick, and hoist standards overview shows that separate provisions exist for construction, general industry, maritime work, and gear certification.
How to choose equipment for a painting lift
Start with the operation rather than the machine name. These questions help a project team define what needs to be checked; they do not constitute a lift plan.

- Define the load and task. Specify what will be hoisted, where it will go, and whether the task involves people, materials, or equipment. Do not estimate capacity from a crane’s appearance.
- Map the reach and route. Identify the placement point, working radius or path of travel, and required clearances. A crane that can reach one part of a building may not reach another from the same setup.
- Check mobility and access. Determine whether equipment can get to the site and whether the location calls for a mobile machine, a tracked machine, or a fixed system already in place.
- Assess site and setup conditions. Account for ground support, available setup space, and any assembly or disassembly needs. OSHA addresses ground conditions and assembly/disassembly in its construction requirements; see the current regulation rather than relying on a general description.
- Confirm the people and rules involved. Identify the applicable jurisdiction and industry rules, operator qualifications, and the roles needed for rigging and signaling. Have qualified personnel develop and review the actual lift arrangements.
There is no single best crane for painting work in general: the right choice depends on the load, reach, access, site, setup, and governing requirements. Safety and operator requirements in U.S. construction
For covered U.S. construction activity, OSHA’s cranes-and-derricks requirements are in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC. The standard applies to listed power-operated equipment used in construction to hoist, lower, and horizontally move a suspended load, subject to its scope provisions and exclusions. Other industries may be governed by different OSHA provisions.

Under current 29 CFR 1926.1427, employers must ensure that operators of equipment covered by Subpart CC meet the section’s training, certification or licensing, and evaluation requirements before operating it. The section lists exceptions, including derricks, sideboom cranes, and equipment with a maximum manufacturer-rated hoisting or lifting capacity of 2,000 pounds or less. Other training requirements may still apply, so an exception from this section’s operator requirement should not be read as a general exemption from safety obligations.
OSHA’s construction crane FAQ, marked revised July 18, 2016, discusses topics including ground conditions, assembly and disassembly, power-line clearances, and other hazards. Use the FAQ as explanatory context and consult the current regulation for legal requirements.

Questions to settle before a crane is used on a paint job
- What exactly is being lifted, and is the plan to lift people, paint supplies, equipment, or another load?
- What reach, route, and clearances does the operation require?
- Can the crane access and set up at the location, and have ground and setup conditions been addressed?
- Which industry and jurisdiction rules apply, and are the operator and other required personnel qualified for their roles?
OSHA’s construction overview explains the U.S. construction context. For an actual painting-project lift, use the applicable standard and qualified planning personnel rather than treating this overview as operating instructions.
