Yes—ChatGPT can create and edit images from natural-language instructions. You can ask for an illustration, poster, painting, product concept, character sheet, or photograph, then refine it conversationally. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Images guide also describes image uploads, localized edits, aspect-ratio controls, and requested transparent backgrounds.
The most reliable results do not come from typing a style name alone. Start with the image’s purpose, subject, action, composition, lighting, palette, and medium. Then generate, identify one problem, and change only that variable. The 100 ideas below are creative directions—not guaranteed one-click presets or separate technical models.
What you can make with ChatGPT Images
Depending on your account, platform, and current rollout, ChatGPT can:
- Generate a new image from a conversation or the Images area.
- Edit an image generated in ChatGPT or an image you upload.
- Add, remove, or replace objects and backgrounds.
- Request square, portrait, landscape, or wide compositions.
- Attempt transparent backgrounds.
- Use multiple reference images for content, composition, or material guidance.
- Attempt lettering, labels, and other text—although important text must always be proofread.
OpenAI notes that editor selections are not always pixel-precise, so an edit can affect more than the highlighted region. Describe the boundaries in words and state what must remain unchanged.

How to create your first image
- Open ChatGPT and either ask directly in a conversation, or choose Images if that option appears in your interface.
- Describe the purpose and subject before adding decorative style terms.
- Specify the composition, lighting, palette, aspect ratio, and exclusions.
- Review the image for unwanted objects, distorted hands, incorrect text, inconsistent faces, and accidental logos.
- Request one focused revision rather than rewriting the entire prompt.
For example:
Create a landscape editorial illustration for an article about learning new technology. Show a person at a desk assembling glowing paper shapes labeled with abstract symbols. Use clean geometric forms, a limited cobalt-blue, coral, cream, and charcoal palette, subtle paper texture, strong negative space, and a modern magazine composition. No logos, no readable brand names, landscape 3:2.
The image-prompt formula
OpenAI’s image-generation guidance emphasizes purpose, subject, action, setting, and visual style. A practical prompt structure is:
Create a [purpose or format] of [subject].
Subject details: [appearance, materials, expression, pose].
Action: [what is happening].
Setting: [location, time, atmosphere].
Composition: [close-up, wide shot, overhead, centered, rule of thirds].
Medium/style: [medium plus observable visual characteristics].
Lighting: [direction, softness, color, time of day].
Palette: [dominant colors and contrast].
Output: [aspect ratio, background, text requirements].
Avoid: [specific unwanted elements].
Purpose helps determine the visual hierarchy. A blog header needs copy space; a product image needs controlled reflections; a character sheet needs consistency and clear views.

Composition controls what the viewer sees first and where it sits. Mention viewpoint, crop, negative space, and subject placement.
Medium and style should describe visible qualities: thick impasto, translucent washes, carved contours, matte paper, hard studio light, or restricted colors.

Prompt recipes for common projects
Social post
Create a square social-media illustration of a ceramic cup beside an open sketchbook and a flowering branch. Use a warm gouache style, clean shapes, soft morning light, terracotta and cream colors, and a calm handmade mood. Keep the composition uncluttered and leave a small area of quiet space at the top. No logos, no readable text, 1:1.
Blog header
Create a wide editorial illustration for an article about creative technology. Show a painter balancing a traditional brush and a glowing geometric tool at a studio table. Use flat geometric forms, cobalt blue, coral, cream, and charcoal, with strong negative space on the left for a headline. No logos, landscape 3:2.
Travel poster
Create a vertical travel poster showing a quiet coastal town at sunrise. Use translucent watercolor washes, loose architectural brushwork, soft paper grain, pale coral and turquoise accents, and a calm hand-painted atmosphere. Leave the upper third relatively empty for later typography. No trademarks, portrait 2:3.
Product concept
Create a premium studio product photograph of a matte-black reusable water bottle on a pale stone pedestal. Use soft directional light from the upper left, realistic condensation, controlled reflections, a warm neutral background, generous copy space on the right, no visible brand name, no extra objects, landscape 4:3.
Character sheet
Create a character design sheet for the same young astronomer in three poses: standing, seated, and looking through a telescope. Keep the face, hairstyle, clothing, colors, and proportions consistent across all views. Use clean concept-art linework, a neutral background, labeled pose notes, and no unrelated characters.
Classroom illustration
Create a clear classroom poster explaining the water cycle for children. Show evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection as four simple connected stages. Use friendly flat vector shapes, high contrast, large blank areas for teacher-added labels, and no invented words. Portrait 2:3.
Album-cover concept
Create a square abstract album-cover concept showing a solitary red sun suspended above rippling black water. Use screen-print texture, limited red, cream, and charcoal colors, strong central symbolism, and no text or logos.
How to edit and improve an image
Open a generated image or upload one, then describe the requested change. If a selection tool is available, highlight the area; otherwise describe its location precisely.
Use preservation constraints:
Keep the subject, pose, camera angle, and color palette unchanged. Replace only the background with a misty pine forest.
Preserve the character’s clothing, face, and proportions. Make the lighting softer and move the light source to the upper left.
Keep the composition exactly as it is. Simplify the background and remove the three objects on the table.
Use the same visual language, but make the result less glossy, more tactile, and more like printed paper.
For reframing, state the destination clearly: “Recompose this as a portrait 2:3 poster while keeping the subject’s size and facial expression.” For transparency, ask for “a transparent background with the entire object isolated,” then check the exported file rather than assuming transparency worked.

- Content reference: what object, clothing, person, or material should appear.
- Composition reference: how the scene should be arranged.
- Style or material reference: color, texture, medium, or mood.
Tell ChatGPT which is which:
Use image 1 for the character’s clothing, image 2 for the room layout, and image 3 only for the muted color palette. Do not copy logos or text.
OpenAI supports multiple uploaded images, but a small, clearly explained set is easier to control than a large collection of conflicting references.
Fixing common failures
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong or invented text | Too much copy or complex lettering | Use fewer words, put exact wording in quotation marks, request a simple layout, and add final typography in a design application. |
| Style drift | Inherited context or conflicting instructions | Say, “Start a new visual direction. Do not reuse the previous painting style, palette, lighting, texture, or composition.” Start a new chat if necessary. |
| Too many objects | No clear subject hierarchy | Name one hero subject, limit secondary objects, and say “no extra objects.” |
| Inconsistent character | Too few invariant details | Use a character sheet or reference image and repeat fixed traits such as hairstyle, clothing, colors, and facial marks. |
| Edit changes too much | Selection boundaries are imprecise | Select a smaller region and describe its edges. State what must remain unchanged. |
| Image feels generic | Style is too broad | Add medium, texture, lighting direction, camera viewpoint, palette, purpose, and intended audience. |
| Composition is wrong | No spatial instruction | Specify crop, viewpoint, subject placement, depth, and negative space. |
When prompts become overloaded, simplify them in this order: subject and action; composition and camera; style and medium; lighting and color; text and exclusions. Change one variable at a time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Text, likenesses, logos, and responsible use
ChatGPT can attempt posters and labels, but inspect every letter, number, logo-like mark, and caption manually. For important copy, the safest workflow is to generate the artwork with blank space and add approved text afterward in a layout tool.
Do not upload or transform someone’s likeness without permission. Take extra care with public figures, deceptive documentary-style scenes, impersonation, and sexualized imagery.
Avoid asking the model to reproduce protected logos for commercial work. Generate a generic placeholder and insert authorized brand assets separately.

Use descriptions of observable characteristics—such as “loose impressionist brushwork,” “ornamental botanical curves,” or “high-key editorial lighting”—rather than asking for a living artist’s exact style. OpenAI has described restrictions around living-artist style imitation.
AI-generated does not automatically mean copyright-free. For commercial projects, check the rights to uploaded references, depicted people, trademarks, local copyright rules, platform terms, and any recognizable protected material in the result. OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks, but provenance signals may not survive every export or platform upload. See the C2PA explanation for context.
ChatGPT versus other AI art tools
| Tool | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Images | Conversational prompting, iterative edits, brainstorming, and image work alongside writing or analysis. | Less suited to pixel-perfect production, advanced compositing, batch control, or guaranteed typography. |
| Midjourney | Artistic exploration, cinematic imagery, and a dedicated visual community. | Less natural for integrated writing and conversational correction. Review its commercial-use terms. |
| Adobe Firefly | Adobe users who want generation followed by Photoshop or Creative Cloud editing. | More ecosystem-oriented and not a guarantee of zero legal risk. Adobe describes its approach here. |
| Canva | Turning images into social posts, presentations, flyers, and branded layouts. | Less focused on specialist image-model control. |
| OpenAI API | Developers building batch workflows, internal tools, or applications. | Requires coding, authentication, monitoring, output handling, and separate billing. See the API announcement. |
Choose ChatGPT when you want to explain what went wrong and revise naturally. Choose a dedicated design tool when you need production compositing, precise color management, repeatable brand systems, or controlled batch output.

Plans, availability, and the API distinction
OpenAI’s current Help Center says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available across tiers, while “Images with thinking” is available on Plus, Pro, and Business and is expected to reach Enterprise and Edu later. Image generation is listed for web, iOS, and Android. Limits and rollout details can change by plan, account, geography, and date, so check the official pricing page before subscribing.
The ChatGPT subscription and OpenAI API are separate products with separate billing. Published API examples for gpt-image-1 have described approximate costs of $0.02, $0.07, and $0.19 for low-, medium-, and high-quality square images, respectively; those figures are API-specific and are not ChatGPT subscription limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT create images in all of these styles?
It can attempt many visual directions, but results vary with the prompt, model behavior, content rules, and iteration. These are descriptive style directions, not guaranteed presets.
Can I use ChatGPT images commercially?
Commercial use depends on current platform terms, applicable law, uploaded references, likenesses, trademarks, and the specific project. Do not treat AI-generated imagery as automatically copyright-free.
Why does ChatGPT keep changing the whole image when I request a small edit?
Selections are not always precise. Highlight a smaller region, describe its boundaries, and explicitly list the subject, pose, camera angle, palette, and other elements that must remain unchanged.
The Bottom Line
For distinctive ChatGPT art, start with purpose, subject, composition, medium, lighting, palette, and aspect ratio—not a style keyword alone. Generate broadly, correct one issue at a time, proofread every important mark, and review rights before using the result commercially.
