The official macOS Monterey wallpaper usually means Apple’s purple-and-blue abstract design. Apple also introduced the Hello desktop picture, while the popular Monterey landscape image is an unofficial recreation. Original downloadable copies are generally hosted by third parties rather than on a dedicated Apple wallpaper-download page.
For the best compatibility, download a static still. If you want time-of-day changes, preserve the original dynamic .heic file—but custom dynamic wallpapers may not behave consistently on every Mac or macOS release.
Which Monterey wallpapers are official?
“Official” can mean Apple-created, Apple-bundled, or Apple-hosted. Those are not the same thing. The files available online may be Apple-original artwork hosted by a third-party archive, not an official Apple download.

Apple released macOS Monterey on October 25, 2021, and Apple’s feature description said the Hello desktop picture came in seven colors, with automatic switching between light and dark versions based on the time of day. Where to download the original Monterey wallpapers
The most useful archival coverage and downloadable copies are on established third-party Apple-publishing sites. The iDownloadBlog Monterey wallpaper archive covers the Apple abstract wallpaper, its still images, and its dynamic file. Treat the page as a third-party source: Apple created the artwork, but that does not make the download Apple-hosted.
When choosing a file, check:
- Whether it is a full-resolution original or a web preview.
- Whether the extension is
.heicfor the dynamic version. - Whether a still image is actually 6016 × 6016 pixels, the resolution reported by iDownloadBlog.
- Whether the file contains multiple frames rather than one flattened image.
The reported dynamic HEIC contains eight still images and was approximately 98 MB in contemporary coverage. Both the frame count and file size should be treated as reported specifications, not guarantees for every mirror or re-encoded copy.
For the Hello desktop picture, Apple’s feature page is the authoritative description of the artwork and its behavior, but it does not function as a current, dedicated Monterey wallpaper-download catalog.
Static versus dynamic Monterey wallpaper
A static wallpaper is an ordinary JPEG, PNG, or single-frame HEIC. It always displays the same image and is the safest choice for older Macs, non-Apple devices, and wallpaper applications that do not understand Apple’s dynamic format.

A dynamic desktop picture contains multiple still frames plus metadata that lets macOS change the appearance. The Monterey abstract dynamic file changes according to the system’s time-of-day or appearance behavior. Converting it to JPEG or PNG produces a usable still, but removes the dynamic behavior.
Choose the static version if you want a particular frame, maximum compatibility, or a smaller file. Choose the dynamic HEIC if you are using Monterey or a compatible later macOS and accept that custom dynamic files may behave differently after an operating-system upgrade.
Set a static wallpaper in macOS Monterey
Monterey uses the older System Preferences interface:

- Control-click or right-click the file.
- Choose Services > Set Desktop Picture, if that option is available.
If the shortcut is missing:
- Open Apple menu > System Preferences.
- Open Desktop & Screen Saver.
- Select the Desktop tab.
- Click the + button.
- Select the folder containing the downloaded image.
- Choose the image from the folder list.
Because the reported original stills are square, a widescreen Mac may crop the edges. Use Fill Screen to cover the display, Fit to Screen to preserve more of the artwork, or avoid Stretch to Fill Screen, which can distort the design.

Set the dynamic HEIC in Monterey
- Download the dynamic file and keep its
.heicextension. - In Finder, right-click it and choose Services > Set Desktop Picture.
- If Monterey treats it as an ordinary still, open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver.
- Click + and add the folder containing the HEIC.
- Select the file from the added folder.
If it still remains static, first select one of Apple’s built-in dynamic desktop pictures, then try setting the downloaded HEIC again. Monterey’s handling of custom dynamic wallpapers is not universal, so a static extracted frame may be the practical fallback.
Use Monterey wallpaper on newer macOS
Current macOS versions use a different interface. Apple’s documented path is:
- Open System Settings.
- Click Wallpaper.
- Under Your Photos, click Add Photo.
- Choose Choose File or add a folder.
- Select the downloaded image.
You can also Control-click an image in Finder and choose the desktop-picture command when it is available. See Apple’s current wallpaper instructions. These labels apply to newer macOS releases, not Monterey’s System Preferences interface.
A custom HEIC may display as a still on newer systems. Compatibility depends on the file’s metadata and how that macOS release handles imported dynamic desktop pictures; do not assume that a file that animated on Monterey will behave identically after an upgrade.

Extract one frame from the dynamic wallpaper
Keep a backup of the original HEIC before converting it. Preview or another Apple image-capable application may expose the file’s individual frames, allowing you to export one as PNG or JPEG. If Preview shows only one image, use a dedicated HEIC frame-extraction utility. The exact workflow varies by application and Monterey build, so extraction is not guaranteed through Preview alone.
Exporting to PNG or JPEG is useful when you want one specific time-of-day frame or need to use the image on Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad, or another wallpaper system.

Monterey’s wallpaper assets may be stored in different locations depending on the wallpaper, point release, and whether macOS downloaded the asset on demand. Commonly reported locations include:

/System/Library/Desktop Pictures//System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_DesktopPicture/~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.mobileAssetDesktop/These paths come from technical investigation and user reports, not a universal Apple support rule. To inspect them, use Finder’s Go > Go to Folder. Avoid modifying or deleting files in protected system directories; re-adding a downloaded copy through the wallpaper settings is safer.

Troubleshooting
The image looks blurry
Check the file in Finder with Get Info. A web preview, resized mirror, or phone-sized copy may be the cause. The Monterey stills were reported at 6016 × 6016 pixels, but dimensions alone do not prove that a file is an untouched Apple original.
The HEIC is static
Confirm that the extension is still .heic and that the file was not converted during download. Try the Finder shortcut, add its containing folder in Desktop & Screen Saver, and select a built-in Apple dynamic picture before retrying. Also check that you did not select a Light Still or Dark Still mode.
The file is missing from Desktop & Screen Saver
Re-add the folder containing the file instead of searching only Apple’s wallpaper categories. Monterey may download some assets only when needed, and an upgrade may remove or relocate cached files.
Finder does not show “Set Desktop Picture”
Use System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver and add the folder manually. The Services shortcut can also be unavailable depending on the file type or Finder context.
The wallpaper is cropped
The original abstract artwork is square, while most Mac displays are widescreen. Choose Fit to Screen to show more of the square source, or Fill Screen if covering the entire display matters more than preserving the edges.
What the Monterey landscape wallpaper is—and is not
The Monterey landscape wallpaper is not an Apple-original wallpaper. It was created by photographers Andrew Levitt, Jacob Phillips, and Taylor Gray as a nature-themed response to Apple’s abstract default. It is available in static and dynamic forms, but should be labeled an unofficial Monterey landscape recreation, not an official macOS Monterey wallpaper. iDownloadBlog’s coverage of the landscape project
Current Monterey context
Apple’s version page lists macOS Monterey 12.7.6 as the latest Monterey point release as of August 2026. Macs that remain on Monterey use the System Preferences instructions above; Macs upgraded to Ventura or later use System Settings and may handle cached or custom dynamic wallpaper files differently.
