Cricut says the Explore 5 is 30% more compact than previous models while retaining its 12-inch cutting performance. Its listed dimensions are 19.8 × 7.5 × 4.7 inches, but “12-inch” describes its machine and material class: the maximum cut area on a 12 × 12-inch mat is 11.5 × 11.5 inches. Compatible Smart Materials can be cut without a mat for projects up to 12 feet long.
The smaller body may suit a more compact craft workspace, while the machine still supports a range of projects and materials. The 30% comparison is Cricut’s claim; the company’s reviewed pages do not identify the exact previous-model baseline or explain how it calculated that percentage.
What is the Cricut Explore 5?
The Cricut Explore 5 is a desktop electronic cutting machine that works with Cricut Design Space. Cricut says it cuts more than 100 materials, including vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, and printable materials, and supports writing, drawing, scoring, and foiling.
It is intended for makers who want a wider project format than a small-format cutter provides. For a painter or mixed-media crafter, it can help prepare stencil elements, labels, painted-sign details, card components, and masks for repeatable designs. It is not a paint application machine.

Explore 5 size and what “12-inch” means
Cricut describes Explore 5 as 30% more compact than previous models. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified measurement. Cricut’s product listing gives the machine’s dimensions as 19.8 × 7.5 × 4.7 inches (50.2 × 19.05 × 11.9 cm) and its weight as 10 lb (4.5 kg). The dimensions describe the machine, not the extra room needed to operate it.
“12-inch” does not mean that a mat-based project can use a full 12 inches of cutting width. Cricut lists the following maximum cut areas and length for the Explore 5:
| Material or setup | Maximum listed cut area or length |
|---|---|
| 12 × 12-inch mat | 11.5 × 11.5 inches |
| 12 × 24-inch mat | 11.5 × 23.5 inches |
| Compatible Smart Materials, matless | Up to 12 feet (3.6 m) long |
These specifications are from Cricut’s Explore 5 product information. Ordinary materials may need a mat; the 12-foot maximum applies to compatible Smart Materials. Cricut’s reviewed sources do not specify additional front, side, or rear clearance, so do not treat the closed-machine dimensions as a complete workspace measurement.

Materials, mats, and tools
The result depends on the material, tool, mat, and settings used. Cricut’s setup guide lists compatible 12 × 12-inch and 12 × 24-inch machine mats, Cricut Card Mats, and tools including the Premium Fine-Point Cutting Tool, Scoring Tool, Deep Point Cutting Tool, and Foil Transfer Tool. Check the material and tool instructions before starting a project.
Some tools are sold separately. Cricut identifies the Deep Cutting Tool as a separate purchase, so do not assume every tool or specialty-material capability is included with the machine.

Setup and software
Explore 5 works with Cricut Design Space. Cricut describes a simplified interface and a more intuitive experience, but the reviewed sources do not establish independent performance results or hands-on reliability testing.
Explore 5 size and project capacity
The key tradeoff is the machine’s smaller claimed body against the project format it supports. Cricut says Explore 5 is 30% more compact than previous models and retains 12-inch cutting performance. On mats, the listed maximum cut width is 11.5 inches; compatible Smart Materials allow matless cuts up to 12 feet long.
Who may value the redesign? It may appeal to new buyers or makers looking to fit an Explore-format machine into a more compact workspace. The available research does not establish that Explore 5 cuts faster or produces better results than an earlier model. The 30% size comparison is Cricut’s claim, and its reviewed pages do not specify the baseline model or calculation method.
What should you consider before buying?
Match the machine to the actual dimensions of your projects and the materials you plan to use. If you need mat-based projects wider than the listed 11.5-inch cut area, or long matless cuts, check whether the material is compatible with the relevant setup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider Cricut Explore 5?
Explore 5 may suit:
- People who want a desktop cutter in Cricut’s 12-inch machine and material class
- Crafters making apparel, cards, stickers, decals, or other supported projects
- Makers who want to use compatible Smart Materials for long matless cuts
- Mixed-media and painting hobbyists preparing labels, masks, or decorative cut elements
What should you check before choosing it?
Check the maximum cut area for your chosen mat and whether your material is compatible with matless cutting. A 12-inch machine class is not the same as a full 12-inch cut width on a mat. If workspace fit is important, remember that the listed outer dimensions do not specify operating clearance.
The research does not include independent measurements or hands-on testing of noise, cutting speed, long-term reliability, or comparative cut quality. Treat performance and compactness claims as Cricut’s statements rather than independent test results.
