Hiroshi Kobayashi, an artist from Daglish in Perth, won the 2024 Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape with The night above, the sun below. The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia (RASWA) reported that 57 artists competed and that the non-acquisitive first prize was $20,000. The award recognises the painting; it does not mean the work was acquired by the prize organiser.
What Kobayashi’s winning painting shows
The night above, the sun below is made in acrylic on polyester canvas, according to the official 2024 prize catalogue. Its central image is built around two spheres: the upper one brings together night and sun, while the lower one mirrors that contrast beneath the horizon. The paired forms suggest a landscape without simply depicting a conventional view.
How the artist made it
Kobayashi’s catalogue statement describes a process that combines digital modelling and hand-painted marks. He created the two spheres as 3D models in CAD, then used a cutting plotter and a paintbrush dipped in acrylic to build up layers of faded brushstrokes. This is the artist’s account of his working method, rather than a technical specification for a particular plotter or a claim about how another painter should work.

The idea behind the title and forms
Kobayashi connected the painting to his experience of arriving in Australia and noticing the sun’s apparent path across the sky. PerthNow quoted him on 18 July 2024: “When I first came to Australia, I was strangely confused by the sun’s trajectory, which moves through the north, unlike in the northern hemisphere where it moves through the south.”
He said that this difference prompted reflection on the scale of Earth and on landscape. In the painting, the contrast between the upper and lower spheres gives that thought a visual structure: the work refers to a place and a way of seeing it, while abstracting the subject into paired forms.

What the judges said
The 2024 catalogue names Janis Nedela, Gemma Weston and prize curator Sandra Murray as judges. It records that they chose Kobayashi unanimously, praising the harmony of “form, concept, story and technique.” Their commentary also says the painting represents landscape while going beyond it—a response that fits its combination of a landscape idea with a deliberately constructed, abstract image.

RASWA announced the 2024 result on 23 July 2024, after PerthNow’s report four days earlier. This is a past award result, not the latest winner: RASWA’s 2025 catalogue identifies Kobayashi as the previous year’s winner and lists him among that edition’s judges. The 2025 first prize went to André Lipscombe, according to the Perth Royal Show’s prize media page.
