Steve McCurry’s photographs of India are the result of a relationship that began with a 1978 trip and continued across decades. Their saturated color, busy scenes and striking juxtapositions convey a country that can delight and astonish—but also confront viewers with scenes McCurry himself described as horrifying.
How McCurry’s India project began
McCurry first travelled to India in 1978. What he expected to be a six-week trip became a two-year stay, he told TIME in 2015. He arrived with a one-way ticket, two suitcases and 250 rolls of Kodachrome, according to that interview. The extended visit became the start of a long-running body of work rather than a single assignment.
By 2016, McCurry had returned to India more than 80 times, Scroll.in reported. That scale matters: the photographs gather impressions made over many visits and years, not a snapshot of one journey or a definitive account of the country.
What makes the photographs feel so vivid
McCurry’s India photographs are known for saturated color, crowded compositions, portraits and sharp contrasts. In his 2015 TIME interview, he described the appeal of India’s “visual chaos” and “endless variety of dramatic cheek-by-jowl juxtapositions”—including modernity alongside tradition, wealth alongside poverty, and the familiar alongside the bizarre.

Those juxtapositions help explain why the pictures can feel simultaneously composed and overwhelming. A portrait may draw the eye, while the surrounding crowd, color and activity keep the scene open and complex. This is a way of reading the photographs, not a claim about a particular camera or film technique: the cited accounts describe the visual effect, but do not establish a technical formula for how every image was made.
McCurry also described the emotional range directly. In a 2016 Condé Nast Traveller India interview, he called India “vibrant and alive” and said, “We travel to go outside our routine, outside our comfort zone. To be charmed, amazed, delighted.” He also acknowledged that shocking scenes can be horrifying. The title’s emotional sequence therefore reflects more than visual spectacle: it recognizes that beauty, surprise and discomfort can coexist in travel photography.

What is Steve McCurry’s India book called?
The principal collection is Steve McCurry: India, published by Phaidon. Phaidon’s listing describes a large-format paperback containing 150 of McCurry’s photographs made across decades of travel in India. It is a selected photographic collection, not a complete record of his visits.

The book’s publication was accompanied by Steve McCurry: India, an exhibition at New York’s Rubin Museum of Art, produced in partnership with the International Center of Photography. Is the Afghan Girl photograph from India?
No. The famous portrait is not an India photograph. National Geographic identifies its subject as Sharbat Gula and places the photograph in a Pakistani refugee camp; it appeared on the magazine’s cover in June 1985. The image is relevant to McCurry’s biography, but it should not be folded into a collection or discussion of his India photographs.

Look first at what pulls your attention, then at what the frame places beside it: a face among other faces, an old form beside a modern one, or a vivid detail within a crowded setting. Those relationships are central to McCurry’s description of India’s visual appeal. At the same time, a set of photographs—however extensive—cannot stand in for every person or experience in a country. The images offer McCurry’s sustained view, shaped by selection and by the places and moments he encountered.
