Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrançois Quentin’s 4N turns time into a mechanical digital display: ten rotating discs reveal the hours and minutes through an opening in the dial, while moving cages drive the display’s jumps. The result, described in 2013 as “a simple digital display powered by a mechanical engine,” sets an immediately legible face against an unusually intricate movement.

How the 4N displays time
The 4N-MVT01 does not use an electronic screen. Its numerals appear as rotating discs pass beneath a central opening. Monochrome Watches’ December 2013 account describes ten discs arranged in three groups:
- Hours: four discs.
- Tens of minutes: one disc.
- Minutes: five discs.
The discs sit in groups held by cages, and the cages themselves rotate as the indication advances. Quentin described the idea in a 2013 interview as a “24h digital display with a very large display.”

Why the movement is more involved than the display suggests
A jumping indication with constant force
Quentin developed the movement with APRP, or Audemars Piguet–Renaud & Papi. Monochrome’s 2013 description explains the jumping system as a spring-loaded “mechanical transistor”: energy builds up over a minute or hour, then releases to move a cage by a fraction of a revolution. Gearing drives the other discs. The constant-force arrangement is intended to limit the energy consumed by those jumps.
Reserve and movement specifications
The precise published power-reserve figure is 237 hours, equivalent to nine days and 21 hours. Monochrome rounded this to ten days in its 2013 article; the 237-hour figure also appears in the 2013 Yanko Design interview and in the indexed text of 4N’s official news page. Yanko Design and the indexed official text also give the movement’s count as 514 components and 78 jewels. These are published specifications, not a current service or performance guarantee.

Finishing is part of the design
Monochrome’s 2013 account describes hand-finished movement details including bevelled edges, polished re-entrant angles and finished bridges. The dial surface has a crossed Côtes de Genève pattern; the article specifically notes that it is not carbon fibre. A quick-change strap system uses buttons on both sides of the case.
What the 2013 edition and price reports establish

The 2013 article included a reader asking where to buy the watch and a reply recommending contacting Quentin by email at that time. That comment is not evidence of a current sales or support channel. The historical edition announcements and prices likewise do not confirm current production, dealer inventory, resale availability or servicing options. Anyone considering a purchase would need to verify the specific watch’s provenance, condition, authenticity and service history directly with a qualified seller or watchmaker.
