DeviantART introduced Muro on August 9, 2010, as a free HTML5 drawing tool that ran in a web browser. Its launch features included pressure-sensitive brushes, layers and ways to save or publish artwork; a later beta update added autosaving and replayable drawing recordings. Current DeviantArt documentation describes a browser tool called DeviantArt Draw, but does not establish that it is Muro under a new name or confirm that Muro remains available.
What was DeviantART Muro?
Muro was a browser-based drawing application announced by DeviantART (now styled DeviantArt) on August 9, 2010. The launch announcement described it as an HTML5 tool available free to DeviantART members. Its aim was to let artists create digital drawings in the browser and then save them to a DeviantART gallery or to a hard drive.

Google web.dev’s September 2010 engineering case study described Muro as an HTML5 Canvas application. It said each layer was represented by a canvas and discussed engineering compromises for supporting older versions of Internet Explorer. The case study also reported that after launch, a new drawing was submitted through Muro about once every five seconds—a figure from 2010, not a measure of present-day use.
What could Muro do at launch?
DeviantART’s August 2010 announcement listed these capabilities. They are historical launch claims, not confirmation of what works today.

Wacom’s August 11, 2010 announcement separately described pen-pressure support through Wacom plug-in support and discussed use with Wacom pen tablets and interactive pen displays. That establishes a historical connection to pressure-sensitive pen input, not compatibility with any particular tablet model today. The launch materials presented a pressure-sensitive pen tablet as an input option, not a requirement.
What changed in Muro’s 2012 beta?
In an April 24, 2012 staff journal, DeviantART described features in a new Muro beta. The journal said the beta saved automatically from the first brush stroke and let users close the browser, then reopen a drawing recording to continue working. It also described saving work to Sta.sh, a smudge brush, and Redraw, which could replay a creation process for publication and sharing.

During the beta, Redraw deviations were viewable only by beta testers, according to the journal. That was a beta-era limitation; the account does not establish whether it applied to a later public release.

DeviantArt’s current Help Center describes DeviantArt Draw as a free, in-browser tool for creating and editing art. Its documentation covers Draw and Adjust tabs, importing existing images, presets that apply filters to layers, and tablet use.

That help article does not say that Draw replaced Muro, inherited its code, or is a renamed version of it. The available documentation also does not verify whether the original Muro application remains accessible. The safest distinction is that Muro was the 2010 product described in historical announcements, while Draw is the browser tool documented by DeviantArt now; continuity between them is not established.
