The Annunciation is the Gospel episode in which the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will conceive and bear Jesus (Luke 1:26–38). Christians connect the event with the Incarnation—the Son of God taking human life. The feast is ordinarily observed on March 25, nine months before Christmas, though a church calendar may transfer it when the date conflicts with a higher-ranking day.

What happens in the Annunciation?

In Luke 1:26–38, Gabriel is sent to Mary in Nazareth with the news that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus. The passage includes both the angel’s message and Mary’s response; the Orthodox Church in America identifies these as the two main components of the event (Orthodox Church in America).

The announcement is not only a story about Mary. It is also associated with the Incarnation: the entry of the Son into human history. The Vatican explains that the Catholic calendar’s title “Annunciation of the Lord” highlights this connection (Vatican News). The Catechism of the Catholic Church, quoted on the Vatican’s Rosary page, says: “The Annunciation to Mary inaugurates the ‘fullness of time’ (Gal 4:4), the time of the fulfilment of God’s promises and preparations” (Vatican).

Why is the Annunciation celebrated on March 25?

March 25 is nine months before Christmas on December 25, marking the period between the Annunciation and Jesus’s birth. Catholic sources explain the date in relation to the Incarnation, and Anglican and Orthodox calendars consulted also observe the feast on March 25 (Vatican News; Church of England; Orthodox Church in America).

The date is customary, not guaranteed for every year in every jurisdiction. A conflict with a higher-ranking liturgical day can lead to a transfer. For example, Pope John Paul II noted in his March 25, 1979 Angelus that the solemnity had been moved to the preceding Saturday because March 25 coincided with a Lenten Sunday (Vatican). For a service date in a particular year, check the relevant church calendar.

What different churches call the feast

The event is shared in Christian tradition, but official feast titles and theological wording vary. These examples reflect the sources’ own calendars and descriptions; they do not establish a single calendar rule for every church.

How the feast is marked in prayer

The Vatican identifies the Annunciation as the first Joyful Mystery of the Rosary (Vatican). The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops suggests praying the Hail Mary with family on March 25 (USCCB). These are devotional options, not requirements for observing the feast. Catholic rosary beads may be used as a prayer aid, but no object is necessary to pray.

A brief historical note

Vatican News reports that celebration of the Annunciation spread in the sixth century and was introduced into the Roman Church under Pope Sergius I in the late seventh century (Vatican News). This is a concise account of the feast’s historical spread, not a complete history of its development.
