A study of ochre objects from Middle Paleolithic sites in Crimea argues that three pieces were shaped and maintained in ways consistent with making marks—and may have had symbolic uses. The evidence does not include a drawing made with those tools, so symbolic drawing remains an interpretation rather than a proven outcome.
What the study examined
Researchers analyzed 16 ochre pieces from Micoquian contexts at Zaskalnaya V (ZSKV), Zaskalnaya VI (ZSKVI) and Prolom II in Crimea, as well as Mukhovets in mainland Ukraine. The assemblage spans up to 70,000 years, according to the study. The team used portable X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and technological analysis to investigate the objects’ composition and traces of manufacture and use. Why three Crimean pieces stand out
ZSKV-06: a shaped, maintained point
ZSKV-06 is an elongated piece of yellow ochre fashioned into a pointed, crayon-like form. The authors identify traces of initial scraping, finer grinding, and later work to renew the tip through removals and further grinding or gouging. That sequence suggests shaping and upkeep rather than an unmodified lump of pigment.
ZSKV-07: a possible fragment
The researchers interpret ZSKV-07 as a possible fragment of a larger crayon. Its identification is tentative; it is part of the authors’ broader case, not a standalone proof of how the object was used.

ZSKV-05: engraved and polished
ZSKV-05 bears deliberate, roughly parallel engraved lines, along with smoothing and polish on prominent areas. The authors read the traces across these three objects as evidence of shaping, use, maintenance and curation. Their argument depends on that combination, not simply on the fact that the pieces are colored ochre.
Do the objects prove symbolic drawing?
No drawing made with these specific objects was recovered, and the study cannot establish what any marks made with them would have meant. Instead, the authors argue that repeatedly maintaining a point is consistent with producing linear marks on a surface—potentially skin, clothing, bags or stone. Broadly applying pigment could be done by rubbing or smearing, they note, so a carefully renewed tip may fit a different kind of activity.

The researchers also report experimental replication showing that dragging the tip of a shaped ochre piece across stone can make marks. This supports the plausibility of mark-making; it does not show that the archaeological objects made a particular image or that any mark was symbolic. The study’s findings and interpretation should be kept distinct from what the artifacts directly preserve.
Why practical uses remain part of the picture
Ochre could have served practical purposes, and the authors do not claim that every object in the 16-piece sample was symbolic. They also discuss experiments in which crayon-like shapes could arise incidentally as ochre was ground. Shape alone, therefore, is not decisive. The case for the highlighted Crimean pieces rests on their combined traces—including tip maintenance, engraving, polish and archaeological context—while alternative explanations remain possible. The study’s discussion of the assemblage addresses these practical possibilities.

How strong is the symbolic-use interpretation?
Archaeologist Rebecca Wragg Sykes, quoted by Live Science, cautioned: “The researchers’ argument that there is direct evidence for symbolic use here is not necessarily the only interpretation.” She also suggested that the etched lines might relate to powder production without representing a symbolic motif. That is a reported alternative interpretation, not a settled consensus.
The careful conclusion is that the objects offer evidence consistent with deliberate mark-making and, in the study authors’ interpretation, symbolic use by some Neanderthals. They do not establish a drawing, its subject, or its meaning.
