Directional pressing means placing the iron down and lifting it again as you work along the grain and in the direction the seam was stitched, rather than sliding it over the fabric. That controlled motion helps keep seams flat without stretching or distorting the fabric. Press as you sew, and follow the pattern and fabric care guidance when choosing heat or deciding how to arrange the seam allowances.
Pressing is not the same as ironing
Ironing usually involves moving the iron across fabric. Pressing uses a lift-and-place motion: lower the iron firmly on an area, hold it briefly, lift it, then place it on the next area. Sliding can pull fabric out of shape, especially around curves or on bias-cut pieces.

University of Florida IFAS Extension advises pressing with the fabric grain—described as the direction with hardly any stretch—and in the direction the seam was stitched to help prevent stretching. See Life Skills in a Minute: Ironing versus Pressing.
How to press a seam as you sew
- Check the pattern and fabric. Follow the pattern’s construction instructions and the fabric’s care guidance. Test the iron setting on a scrap of the same fabric first; SINGER Australia recommends this precaution in its Pressing Pointers.
- Set the stitching line. Place the iron on the stitched seam before opening or arranging the allowances. This helps the stitches settle into the fabric.
- Arrange the allowances as directed. Press them open when the pattern calls for an open seam, or to one side when the construction calls for that finish. Neither direction is right for every seam.
- Press in short, controlled placements. Work along the grain and in the seam’s stitching direction, lifting the iron between placements instead of dragging it along the fabric.
- Press before seams are crossed by later pieces. Work through the construction sequence so seams and details are pressed while they are still accessible. Oregon State University Extension’s Pressing Skills: Oregon 4-H Clothing Construction Fact Sheets covers pressing during construction and supports for open seams.
Choose a pressing aid for the job
| Task | Useful aid | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Pressing an open seam | Seam roll; paper strips beneath the allowances are another option | Supports the seam and helps prevent allowance edges from leaving impressions on the garment’s right side. Oregon State University Extension describes both approaches: Pressing Skills. |
| Shaping curves, darts, collars, or sleeve caps | Tailor’s ham or pressing cushion | Provides a curved support under the fabric so a shaped area can be pressed without flattening it against a board. See University of Florida IFAS Extension. |
| Protecting delicate fabric or covering a fastener | Press cloth, such as a scrap of muslin | Helps reduce shine or spotting and protects fabric around fasteners. Pressing from the wrong side can also be useful where practical. See SINGER Australia. |
| Checking a safe heat setting | Iron with suitable settings and a fabric scrap for testing | Test the heat on the actual fabric before pressing the garment; fabric care guidance should govern the setting. See SINGER Australia. |
Keep curves and fabric marks under control
- Support curved areas with a ham or pressing cushion, and avoid stretching the fabric while shaping it.
- Use a press cloth when fabric is prone to shine or spotting, or when covering a fastener that could scratch the iron or damage the cloth.
- Remove pins or work around them before pressing; pins and basting threads can leave marks.
- For open seams, place a seam roll beneath the seam or paper beneath the allowances to help keep seam edges from imprinting on the right side.
These are task-based tools, not a product ranking: the cited instructional sources explain what the aids do but do not compare brands or products in controlled tests. Heat tolerance and the intended seam finish vary by fabric and construction, so the pattern and fabric care guidance remain the deciding factors.
