The Beachy T-Shirt Throw pattern turns 14 T-shirts into a 62½ × 77½-inch quilt, with a sandcastle-inspired arrangement of muted tan batiks and ocean-blue and blue-green accents. The key to a smooth build is stabilizing the shirt panels before cutting them to size; the remaining work is piecing the blocks into rows, adding borders, and quilting and binding the quilt.

What the Beachy T-Shirt Throw pattern makes
American Patchwork & Quilting’s pattern, published June 14, 2013, uses shirt graphics as the focal points and batiks as the surrounding sand-and-water palette. It calls for 14 T-shirts and finishes at 62½ × 77½ inches. The inspiration designer for “One Size Fits All” is credited as Theresa Porter, with Judy Sams Sohn as quilt tester. Prepare and stabilize the T-shirts
- Choose 14 shirts with graphics you want to preserve. Open each shirt by cutting away the side seams, then remove the collar and armhole areas. Leave the panels larger than their final dimensions for now.
- Lay each shirt facedown and place ultralightweight fusible interfacing over the back of the printed area. Fuse it according to the interfacing manufacturer’s pressing instructions. Let the stabilized fabric cool before cutting.
- Cut six stabilized panels into 12½ × 16½-inch rectangles and eight into 12½-inch squares, following the pattern’s placement and cutting directions so the designs fit their intended blocks.
Interfacing gives stretchy T-shirt knit more stability for cutting and piecing. The Beachy pattern specifies ultralightweight fusible interfacing; the general T-shirt-quilt guide by Annette Rosanelli and Chris Rickert notes that lightweight fusibles may be woven or non-woven. It gives Pellon Shape-Flex as a woven example and Therm-o-Web Heat’n Bond as a non-woven example, not as tested or required substitutes for this pattern. Read the general T-shirt quilt guide.

Piece the blocks and assemble the quilt top
The pattern uses four block styles, joining or framing shirt panels with batik strips. Because the blocks differ in design and size, use the pattern’s diagrams and cutting instructions rather than treating every shirt graphic as an identical square.
- Join the specified shirt squares and rectangles with the assigned batik strips to make the four block styles.
- Arrange and sew the blocks into four horizontal rows in the pattern’s sand-and-water layout.
- Join the rows to make a quilt center measuring 55½ × 70½ inches.
- Add the pieced outer borders. The complete top measures 62½ × 77½ inches finished.
Layer, quilt, and bind
Make the quilt sandwich by layering the backing, batting, and pieced top, then baste the layers together. Quilt as desired, either with your own machine quilting or by using a professional long-arm quilter. The general guide describes both approaches but does not compare their cost, quality, or availability.

T-shirt quilts are often made to keep shirts tied to concerts, sports, school activities, vacations, and trips. Before stabilizing, decide which part of each graphic matters most and check that the planned cut will preserve it. If a design is too large or off-center for the specified rectangle or square, consult the pattern layout before trimming; once cut, the panel cannot be enlarged.
