Diwali in 2025 fell on Monday, 20 October, according to India Post’s holiday listing. The date is a Gregorian-calendar date for the festival; it is not a city-specific Lakshmi Puja time.
When was Diwali in 2025?
India Post listed Diwali (Deepavali) on Monday, 20 October 2025. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research’s 2025 holiday list gives the same date.
Why does Diwali’s date change each year?
Diwali follows a lunar calendar, so its date shifts on the Gregorian calendar from year to year. The Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav overview says it usually falls in October or November. Delhi Tourism describes it in relation to Amavasya, the new-moon day, in Kartik.

How is Diwali commonly observed?
Diwali is widely known as the festival of lights, but practices and explanations vary among communities and places. Delhi Tourism describes the festival as symbolising “the victory of good over evil and light over darkness” and recounts the tradition of Rama’s return to Ayodhya. These are examples of commonly shared interpretations, not an exhaustive account of the festival’s meanings.
Lights and decorations
Delhi Tourism describes people cleaning and decorating homes and workplaces with diyas, candles, and electric lights. These are customs and decorative choices, not requirements followed by everyone.

Worship and the festival days
The Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav overview presents Diwali as a five-day festival beginning with Dhanteras. Its summary describes Lakshmi and Ganesha worship and lamps on the main day, followed by Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. The overview offers a broad outline rather than a universal schedule for every community.
Sweets and celebration
Sharing sweets is among the customs summarized by Utsav. Celebrations differ, so a general overview cannot specify how every family or region observes the festival.

Does 20 October give the Lakshmi Puja time for every city?
No. The holiday listings establish the date, not a local ritual time. A city-specific Lakshmi Puja muhurat requires a location and a suitable local calendar; the general tourism overviews do not establish one.
