What does Double Ten Day commemorate?
October 10 commemorates the Wuchang Uprising, which marked the beginning of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. That is the historical connection given by the Office of the President. The account identifies the uprising and revolution as the commemoration; it does not describe October 10 as the date of the Republic’s formal founding.
Official English sources use names including “National Day,” “Double Tenth National Day” and “Double 10th National Day.” The sources refer to Taiwan and, in some contexts, the Republic of China (Taiwan); political and national-identity terminology is not universally agreed.

How is Taiwan’s National Day observed?
National flags appear on bridges, roads and government buildings across Taiwan each October. The Office of the President describes the tradition this way: “Every October, bridges, roads, and government buildings across Taiwan are adorned with rows of national flags.” Ceremonies have changed over time and include international exchange performances.
Recent official observances include a ceremony at the Presidential Office Building in Taipei. For example, President Lai Ching-te attended the ROC’s 114th Double Tenth National Day Celebration there on October 10, 2025, and delivered an address titled “A New Taiwan Rises in a Time of Change,” as recorded by the Office of the President.

What should visitors know before attending?
Check whether the event requires registration or a badge
The ceremony’s capacity-limited registration and no walk-up registration rule apply to that event. OCAC’s Overseas Compatriot Badge requirement applies to overseas compatriots covered by its guidance; it should not be treated as a general entry rule for every public celebration. The gala listing also specifies badge presentation and security screening for covered participants.
Plan for a long outdoor ceremony
OCAC says the ceremony lasts four to five hours and advises attendees to consider their health because conditions may be hot. Bring suitable sun protection and water, and assess whether a prolonged outdoor event is appropriate for you.

Understand the travel subsidy conditions
OCAC describes a subsidy of NT$3,000 per person, rising to NT$4,000 per person for qualifying itineraries that include Hualien or Taitung. These are conditional program amounts, not an automatic discount: eligibility, expenses, itinerary and participation requirements apply. OCAC says details of qualified travel agencies and itineraries will be announced on its site.
Is October 10 a public holiday in Taiwan?
Yes. October 10 is National Day and a one-day public holiday. Taiwan’s 2026 work calendar lists National Day and explains that a substitute day may apply when a holiday coincides with a regular day off, subject to official calendar administration. The Taiwan Tourism Administration also lists October 10, 2026 as National Day.
For a visitor, this means services, transport and opening hours may follow holiday schedules; check the specific attraction or provider before travelling. The holiday’s date remains October 10 even when an official calendar provides a substitute day off.
