Diwali rangoli is decorative floor art, often made near a home’s entrance as part of festival preparations. You can create it freehand with colors, flowers, rice, or other natural materials, or use a stencil for a repeatable pattern. The name, materials, motifs, and meanings vary across regions and households; no single technique or interpretation applies to everyone.

What rangoli means during Diwali
India’s Ministry of Tourism describes rangoli at Diwali doorsteps as colorful artwork associated with welcoming good fortune. Maharashtra Tourism likewise describes entrance rangoli as something believed to invite prosperity and positivity. These are cultural associations and beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes or meanings shared identically by every practitioner. Incredible India; Maharashtra Tourism.
The Ministry of Culture also frames rangoli as a form of creativity and cultural expression that can involve community participation. A household may choose a familiar motif, make a design together, or simply decorate the floor in a way that feels right to them. Ministry of Culture.

When to make Diwali rangoli
Rangoli is often part of decorating the home in the lead-up to Diwali, especially around the entrance. The Ministry of Tourism describes Diwali as a five-day festival in Kartika, generally falling between mid-October and mid-November. Because Diwali follows a lunar calendar, its Gregorian date changes each year; consult a current official calendar for the date in a particular year rather than relying on an old date. Utsav, Ministry of Tourism.
Materials for Diwali rangoli
There is no fixed materials list. The Ministry of Culture documents colors, flowers, rice, and other natural materials as options for colorful floor patterns. Choose according to the look you want and what is suitable for the surface and setting.

Sanjhi is a specific paper-stenciling craft rooted in the temple practices of Mathura and Vrindavan, not a universal method for making rangoli. In the documented process, designs are drawn on paper and cut into stencils; the openings are then filled with materials such as dry colors, colored stones, fresh flowers, mirror pieces, or metal foil. A paper stencil is one way to make a repeatable pattern, not a requirement for Diwali decoration. Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts).
A simple way to plan your design
- Choose a location. Decide where the floor art will go, often near the entrance, and consider the surface before selecting materials.
- Pick a method. Draw freehand for an individual pattern, arrange flowers or rice directly, or use a stencil if you want a repeatable shape.
- Select materials. Use colors, flowers, rice, or other natural materials; combine them if that suits the design. None is mandatory.
- Set out the outline. Sketch a guide on the floor or position a stencil before filling the shapes. For a Sanjhi-style stencil, the traditional documented sequence is to cut a design into paper and fill its openings.
- Fill and finish. Add the chosen material to each section, then leave the arrangement as a temporary decoration suited to your home and celebration.
Choosing an approach
| Approach | Materials | Method | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freehand floor pattern | Colors, flowers, rice, or other natural materials | Draw directly on the floor and fill the design | A flexible rangoli approach; motifs and meanings can vary |
| Stencil-guided pattern | Often dry colors; a stencil guides the shape | Place a stencil and fill its openings | An optional way to make repeatable patterns |
| Sanjhi craft | Dry colors, colored stones, fresh flowers, mirror pieces, or metal foil | Cut a paper design into a stencil and fill it | A regional craft associated with Mathura and Vrindavan, not the sole form of rangoli |
The Ministry of Culture documents the broad material choices, while the handicrafts authority documents the Sanjhi process and materials: Ministry of Culture; Development Commissioner (Handicrafts).
