A heated-filament pen can add a bead along a 3D-print seam and may fuse compatible thermoplastic surfaces. The DIY tool covered by Hackaday uses a printer-style hot end and modified extruder to apply localized heat and feed plastic faster than an ordinary craft pen, but its reported advantage comes from one maker demonstration—not a universal strength rating.

What problem is this tool solving?
Joining two printed parts can be awkward when the seam needs added material or is difficult to clamp. A conventional 3D pen can lay hot filament into or over a seam; the DIY tool aims to heat the joint while feeding filament into it.
The process can be useful for accessible seams and small repairs, but it does not guarantee that a joint will be as strong as a one-piece print. Material compatibility, seam geometry, wall thickness, bead placement, and the direction of the load can all affect the result.
What is the DIY tool?
Hackaday’s March 7, 2026 report describes a pistol-shaped custom tool made with a standard 3D-printer hot end, a conductive brass nozzle, and a modified extruder. The nozzle heats the joint area as the tool feeds filament. Hackaday characterizes it as faster than a commercial 3D pen because it applies more heat at the work and extrudes more quickly.
This is a custom handheld extrusion tool, not an ordinary off-the-shelf pen or a verified product readers can buy. The report says the maker had not released the design. It does not provide enough verified specifications to reproduce the tool as a build recipe.

How do you join two 3D prints with a pen?
A pen can place hot filament into or over a seam. An engineering education exercise describes butt, corner, lap, tee, and edge joint geometries, and recommends heating the two surfaces before adding a bead. A National Library Board of Singapore guide notes that melted PLA sticks to itself and can be used to join 3D-pen parts or repair prints.
- Check compatibility. Verify that the pen supports the filament and that the filler is compatible with the printed part. Material support varies by model.
- Prepare and align the seam. Choose a joint shape that suits the parts, and hold them in a vise or other fixture if needed.
- Heat the surfaces before adding the bead. Follow the pen’s instructions and avoid assuming a surface bead has fused through the wall.
- Test on scrap first. Use the same print material and pen filament before attempting a valued part. This is a precaution, not a result established by the cited sources.
What did the strength comparison show?
Hackaday reports that the maker’s demonstration showed a stronger bond with the custom welding pen than with an ordinary 3D pen, and a much stronger join than with the tested superglue approach. The same report says hot-air plastic welding produced a stronger result, though the maker noted that hot air can be difficult to use safely on thin-walled prints.
These are qualitative observations from one demonstration. The sources do not provide controlled, generalizable strength measurements or a published numeric result. The comparison does not establish that the DIY pen is stronger than glue in general, or that any pen weld is suitable for structural or safety-critical use.
How does a pen compare with other joining options?
| Option | What it can offer | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary 3D pen | Manual filament placement for seams and small repairs. | The maker’s demonstration found the custom tool faster; compatibility depends on the pen model. |
| DIY extrusion tool | Localized heating and faster material delivery, according to Hackaday’s report. | It is an unreleased custom design, not a verified product or build recipe. |
| Hot-air plastic welding | Produced the strongest result in the reported demonstration. | The maker said it can be difficult to use safely on thin-walled prints. |
| Superglue | Was included as a comparison in the maker’s demonstration. | That test found a weaker join than the custom pen, but the result is not a general strength rating. |
Available evidence does not provide controlled measurements across joining methods. Consider access and control at the seam, material compatibility, heat spread, cleanup, and the demands of the specific repair rather than treating the demonstration as a universal ranking.

Why material matching matters
Pen material support is model-specific. For example, 3DPen.com’s FAQ says its Start model uses PCL and its Create and Pro models accept PLA and ABS. That is compatibility guidance for its own product line, not a rule for every pen. The National Library Board’s joining guidance specifically discusses PLA.
Use filler compatible with the printed part and verify that the pen supports it. Do not assume that dissimilar polymers will fuse reliably just because they look alike.
Safety while using a heated pen
Keep clear of the hot nozzle and follow the instructions for the actual pen and filament. The National Library Board guide warns users not to touch the hot tip; 3DPen.com also advises avoiding the heated nozzle and working in a well-ventilated area. Use ventilation appropriate to the material and tool. Do not rely on unsupported temperature, emissions, or health claims.

Can a 3D pen join two 3D prints?
A pen can add hot filament along a seam, and melted PLA can stick to itself. Whether the joint is useful depends on material compatibility, seam geometry, and how the process is carried out; a bead does not prove deep fusion or restore the strength of a one-piece print.

Is the DIY welding pen available to buy?
Hackaday reported that the maker had not released the design. The available report does not verify a product for sale or provide enough information to reproduce the tool.
Is the DIY pen stronger than hot-air welding?
Not in the reported demonstration: Hackaday says hot-air plastic welding produced a stronger result. The comparison is qualitative and does not establish a universal ranking.
Can I use any filament in a 3D pen?
No. Material support depends on the pen model. Check its instructions and use filler compatible with the printed part; do not assume different polymers will fuse reliably.
The verdict
The project addresses a practical limitation of ordinary 3D pens by combining localized joint heating with faster filament delivery. Hackaday’s report describes a promising maker demonstration, not controlled strength data or a ready-to-build design. For readers, the key takeaways are to verify material compatibility, work safely around the hot nozzle, and test the joint approach on scrap before relying on it.
