More megapixels can help you reproduce a painting accurately, but they do not automatically produce a better photograph. For painters, extra resolution is most useful when you photograph large canvases, capture fine texture, make exhibition prints, archive work, or crop details. For ordinary portfolio images and web galleries, lighting, color accuracy, lens quality, focus, and glare control usually matter more than the camera’s headline megapixel number.

The short answer

Megapixels measure how many pixels a camera records. They set an upper limit on the amount of spatial detail available in the file, but they do not independently determine sharpness, color, dynamic range, noise, autofocus, or lighting quality.

If your photographs are mainly displayed on a website or social media, a modern camera with roughly mid-20-megapixel resolution is generally sufficient. Consumer Reports likewise notes that most cameras already offer enough megapixels for most users, while lens and sensor size can be more important image-quality factors. Consumer Reports camera buying guide

What a megapixel actually measures

One megapixel is approximately one million image pixels. The calculation is:

Megapixels = (horizontal pixels × vertical pixels) ÷ 1,000,000

A 6,000 × 4,000 photograph contains 24 million pixels, or approximately 24MP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pixel count is not the same as resolved detail. These terms describe different things:

Term Meaning
Pixel count The number of recorded image samples.
Spatial resolution The ability to distinguish fine subject detail.
Acutance Perceived edge sharpness and crispness.
Sensor size The physical area that records light.
Pixel pitch The physical size or spacing of individual sensor photosites.
Dynamic range The range from recorded shadow detail to highlight detail.
Signal-to-noise ratio The strength of image information relative to noise.

A high-resolution file can still look worse than a lower-resolution one if it is out of focus, blurred by camera movement, affected by glare, poorly lit, heavily denoised, or compressed. IEEE Spectrum discusses the roles of pixel size, sensor size, filters, microlenses, firmware, and lenses in image quality rather than treating megapixels as the whole story. IEEE Spectrum

When more megapixels help painters

1. Photographing large paintings

Extra pixels provide more source information for large reproductions. At 300 pixels per inch, a 6,000 × 4,000 image can produce a nominal print of approximately 20 × 13.3 inches. A 45MP image measuring 8,192 × 5,464 pixels reaches approximately 27.3 × 18.2 inches, while a 60MP image measuring 9,504 × 6,336 pixels reaches approximately 31.7 × 21.1 inches.

These are planning calculations, not hard limits. A large print is often viewed from farther away, and professional printers can enlarge a file successfully. Conversely, a small fine-art print inspected closely may benefit from more source resolution.

2. Preserving brushwork and surface texture

High resolution can record fine impasto, canvas weave, pencil marks, glazing, and subtle surface changes—provided the lighting, focus, lens, and camera position are good enough. This is particularly valuable for portfolios, archives, conservation documentation, and licensing images where the viewer may inspect details.

3. Cropping and reframing

Cropping is usually the most practical reason to choose a higher-resolution body. If a crop retains one-quarter of the original image area, it also retains approximately one-quarter of the original pixel count:

  • 24MP original: approximately 6MP after a 25% area crop.
  • 45MP original: approximately 11.25MP after the same crop.
  • 60MP original: approximately 15MP after the same crop.

The benefit is meaningful, but it is not proportional to the headline number. Linear detail rises with the square root of pixel count. Moving from 24MP to 60MP produces approximately 1.58 times as many pixels across or vertically—not 2.5 times as much visible detail.

When megapixels matter much less

Extra resolution is unlikely to transform a painting photograph when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The final image is resized for a website, social platform, or small screen.
  • The painting is already framed accurately and requires little cropping.
  • Glare, uneven illumination, or color casts dominate the image.
  • The photograph is slightly out of focus or blurred by camera movement.
  • The lens is soft at the selected aperture.
  • The image is heavily compressed or aggressively noise-reduced.
  • The painting is small and the final print is modest in size.

For a web portfolio, viewers are more likely to notice inaccurate color, reflections, perspective distortion, or uneven lighting than the difference between a good 24MP file and a 45MP file. A larger file does not repair a highlight reflected from varnish or a blue cast caused by the room’s lighting.

Resolution is only as good as the complete imaging system

The effective detail in a painting photograph is limited by the weakest major link:

  1. The detail and contrast present in the artwork.
  2. The lens’s resolving ability.
  3. Accurate focus across the entire painting.
  4. Camera alignment and perspective control.
  5. Shutter speed and camera stability.
  6. Lighting quality and glare management.
  7. Sensor sampling, demosaicing, and processing.
  8. Export settings, resizing, and compression.

A high-resolution sensor can reveal more detail when the lens and technique support it. Canon describes this relationship in its discussion of high-resolution sensors and lens resolving power. Canon Community discussion

Lens quality, focus, and lighting usually come first

For artwork reproduction, a suitable lens should provide good sharpness across the frame, low distortion, controlled chromatic aberration, and consistent corner performance at the working aperture. Center sharpness alone is not enough: the edges and corners of a flat painting must also remain clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every expensive lens is automatically better, or that an older lens cannot work well on a high-resolution body. Performance depends on the particular lens, aperture, distance, focus accuracy, and output size. However, if your existing lens is the limiting factor, spending your budget on a better-suited lens, copy stand, tripod, or lighting setup may improve reproduction more than changing bodies.

Use a tripod or rigid support, align the camera parallel to the artwork, focus carefully, and illuminate the surface evenly from both sides. For glossy or varnished paintings, controlling reflections is often more important than adding megapixels.

Sensor size and megapixels are not interchangeable

Two cameras can have the same pixel count but very different sensor areas. Nikon identifies its DX format as approximately 24 × 16mm and its FX format as approximately 36 × 24mm. Nikon’s DX and FX format guide

Sensor size affects field of view, depth-of-field behavior, total light-gathering area, and the design of compatible lenses. Pixel count alone does not tell you how much total light the camera can collect. A smaller sensor may contain many pixels with smaller photosites, while a larger sensor with a similar pixel count may use physically larger photosites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make larger pixels automatically superior. Sensor generation, efficiency, microlenses, readout electronics, exposure, image processing, and final output size all matter. The meaningful comparison is between complete systems, not isolated megapixel figures.

Low-light performance: the simple slogan is wrong

It is too absolute to say that more megapixels always produce more noise. Smaller photosites can make noise more apparent when viewed pixel-for-pixel, but a high-resolution image can be downsampled to the same output dimensions as a lower-resolution image. In that comparison, the difference may shrink or even favor the higher-resolution file.

Final-image noise depends on sensor area, exposure, lens aperture, stabilization, sensor efficiency, processing, and the size at which the image is viewed. For a painter photographing artwork indoors, good continuous lighting and a stable camera may matter more than choosing between two bodies with different pixel counts.

Diffraction and high-resolution sensors

Diffraction occurs when light spreads as it passes through a small aperture, reducing fine-detail contrast. A high-resolution sensor may reveal this softness earlier at 100% viewing because it samples the optical blur more finely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal aperture at which diffraction suddenly makes a camera unusable. The visible effect depends on pixel pitch, lens quality, wavelength, focus distance, enlargement, and the viewer’s sharpness standard. A high-resolution camera may still retain more useful detail than a lower-resolution camera after both images are resized. The Digital Picture explains this relationship in its discussion of diffraction and sensor resolution. The Digital Picture

For copying artwork, choose the aperture that provides adequate depth of field and even sharpness rather than chasing maximum pixel-level sharpness at all costs.

Smartphone megapixels are not directly comparable

A phone advertising 48MP or 108MP should not be compared directly with an interchangeable-lens camera solely by counting pixels. The systems may differ substantially in:

  • Sensor area.
  • Lens focal length and aperture.
  • Pixel binning.
  • Multi-frame HDR and noise reduction.
  • Computational sharpening.
  • Raw, JPEG, or HEIF output.
  • Periscope or folded telephoto optics.
  • Default file dimensions.

Many phones combine neighboring sensor pixels and produce a lower-resolution file to improve noise, color, or file size. That is a design trade-off, not necessarily a defect. Phones can also produce excellent photographs through multi-frame processing even with small sensors. The same pixel count does not mean the same imaging capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pixel binning and multi-shot modes

Some cameras and phones combine adjacent pixels or multiple exposures. Depending on the device and mode, this can improve noise, HDR performance, color consistency, autofocus behavior, or file efficiency. The output may contain fewer megapixels than the sensor’s nominal count.

Always check the exact recording mode. A camera’s maximum still resolution may not be used in every video, crop, high-speed, or computational mode.

The costs of higher resolution

More pixels also mean larger files and a more demanding workflow:

  • More memory-card capacity.
  • Larger backups and potentially higher cloud-storage costs.
  • Longer transfers.
  • More demanding editing hardware.
  • Longer export and processing times.
  • More difficult tethered workflows.
  • Greater sensitivity to focus and camera movement.

Think in three stages:

  • Capture resolution: what the sensor records.
  • Working resolution: what you retain while editing.
  • Delivery resolution: what a website, client, publication, or printer receives.

If your delivery file is always small, capturing at maximum resolution may still be useful for archiving, but it may not be the most efficient everyday workflow. A camera with a smaller RAW option or lower-resolution mode can be practical for routine images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Megapixels and video

Still-image resolution does not automatically predict video quality. 4K UHD is 3,840 × 2,160, or approximately 8.3 million pixels per frame. 8K DCI is 8,192 × 4,320, or approximately 35.4 million pixels per frame.

A sensor with more pixels than the delivery format can provide room for reframing, stabilization, oversampling, or extracting still frames. Canon’s EOS R5, for example, uses a 45MP full-frame sensor and offers an 8K capture context. Canon EOS R5

But video also depends on readout speed, rolling shutter, codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, dynamic range, autofocus, heat management, and lens quality. Some cameras crop the sensor, skip lines, bin pixels, or use only part of the sensor in particular video modes.

How many megapixels do you need?

Your painting-photography use What to prioritize
Website, social media, and online portfolio Color, lighting, glare control, focus, convenience, and reliable workflow. Almost any modern camera resolution is adequate.
General studio documentation A balanced system with roughly mid-20MP resolution, a suitable lens, even lighting, and accurate alignment.
Large prints and wall art Higher resolution can help, especially when the lens, lighting, and camera support it.
Fine-art reproduction and archives Resolution, color management, uniform lighting, accurate focus, and a repeatable copy setup.
Frequent cropping or multiple aspect ratios More resolution provides useful reframing headroom.
Video documentation Recording resolution, readout, codec, heat management, autofocus, and color—not still-photo megapixels alone.

A six-question upgrade test

  1. What is your largest final output? Is it a web image, a catalog page, a fine-art print, or a wall-sized reproduction?
  2. How much do you crop? If you frequently remove one-half or more of the frame, extra resolution may be valuable.
  3. Are the current limitations actually resolution? Check for glare, color shifts, softness, perspective, and uneven illumination first.
  4. Can your lens and technique resolve the extra detail? A high-resolution body cannot compensate for missed focus, camera shake, or a weak lens.
  5. How often do you work in difficult conditions? For low light or fast-moving subjects, autofocus, stabilization, shutter behavior, and processing speed may matter more.
  6. Can your workflow handle larger files? Include memory cards, backups, editing hardware, transfer time, and storage in the budget.

Should you spend more on the body or the lens?

If your current photographs lack sharpness across the painting, show reflections, have uneven exposure, or suffer from inaccurate color, a new body with more megapixels is unlikely to solve the main problem. A better lens, tripod, copy stand, polarizing or cross-polarized lighting setup, color reference, or controlled workspace may produce a larger improvement.

Choose a high-resolution body when you have already addressed those constraints and your actual output demands more cropping, larger prints, or finer recorded texture. A 45MP full-frame camera such as Canon’s EOS R5 Mark II represents one current high-resolution class, while lower-resolution bodies may offer a better balance for routine work, speed, low-light shooting, cost, or storage. Canon’s product pages have shown changing prices and inconsistent availability, so current listings should be checked directly rather than treated as permanent recommendations. Canon EOS R5 Mark II Canon mirrorless camera category

Bottom line

Buy enough megapixels for the crop and output you actually need. For photographing paintings, resolution is valuable for large reproductions, detailed archives, fine texture, and flexible reframing. It is far less important than controlled lighting, color accuracy, lens performance, focus, alignment, and stability when the final image is a normal-sized web photograph.

Megapixels set the potential detail ceiling; your entire capture system determines how much useful information reaches the final image.
