Usually, no. LED grow lights generally produce plant-usable light more efficiently than high-pressure sodium (HPS) or fluorescent fixtures, so they often use less electricity for comparable growing results. They can still add a noticeable amount to your bill when a high-wattage fixture runs for long photoperiods, when several fixtures operate together, or when cooling equipment runs continuously. Your actual cost is determined by the fixture’s wall-plug wattage, hours per day, dimming level, number of fixtures and electricity rate—not by the word “LED” on the label.

What determines how much electricity an LED grow light uses?

Three inputs control the light’s direct energy use: its actual input wattage, the number of hours it operates and your utility’s price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). A fixture labeled “100-watt equivalent” may draw far less than 100 watts, while a fixture advertised for a large area may draw several hundred watts. Always use the manufacturer’s measured or stated watts used at the wall.

Photoperiod matters just as much as wattage. A 150-watt fixture running 18 hours a day uses 50 percent more energy than the same fixture running 12 hours. Dimming reduces consumption when the driver actually lowers output; leaving a light at full power and simply moving it farther from plants does not reduce its electrical draw.

The number of fixtures is additive. Two identical 150-watt lights running on the same schedule consume twice the energy of one. Drivers, cooling fans and room HVAC can add indirect electricity use, particularly in enclosed spaces or during hot weather.

How do I calculate the electricity cost of a grow light?

Use the fixture’s real wattage and operating schedule, then apply your utility rate. University of Missouri Extension and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension describe the same basic method.

  1. Find actual input watts. Use the wall-plug or “power consumption” figure, not an incandescent-equivalent number. If a dimmer is set below full power, use the measured draw at that setting when available.
  2. Calculate daily energy. Daily kWh = watts × operating hours per day ÷ 1,000.
  3. Calculate the period you care about. Multiply daily kWh by the number of operating days. For a 30-day month, multiply by 30 unless your schedule has planned off-days.
  4. Apply your electricity price. Cost = kWh × price per kWh. Use the energy charge on your bill; a time-of-use plan may have different rates at different hours.

This calculation estimates the light’s direct consumption. It does not include fans, pumps, dehumidifiers, air conditioners or heaters on the same circuit.

Worked example: a 150-watt fixture

A 150-watt light operated for 12 hours per day uses 150 × 12 ÷ 1,000 = 1.8 kWh each day. Over 30 days, that is 54 kWh. At an assumed rate of $0.20 per kWh, the light costs $10.80 for that month. The $0.20 rate is only an illustration; substitute the rate on your own bill.

What would a 100-watt light cost?

At 12 hours per day, a 100-watt fixture uses 1.2 kWh daily and 36 kWh in a 30-day month. At the same assumed $0.20 per kWh, the monthly energy charge would be $7.20. A 300-watt fixture on that schedule uses 3.6 kWh daily and 108 kWh in 30 days, exactly twice the energy of a 150-watt fixture.

Does LED efficiency actually lower electricity use?

Yes, when you compare fixtures delivering similar plant-usable light to the same area. Efficiency describes how many photosynthetic photons a fixture produces for each joule of electricity. University of Missouri Extension’s 2025 guidance describes current LEDs as exceeding 2.5 micromoles per joule (µmol/J) and uses 2.5 µmol/J in a calculation example.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that specialized LED products can reach up to 150 lumens per watt or more, although lumens are a human-vision metric and are not a substitute for horticultural measurements. For plants, compare photosynthetic photon efficacy (PPE), photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD).

  • PPE (µmol/J) indicates how efficiently a fixture converts electricity into photosynthetic photons. A higher value generally means less energy for the same photon output, all else equal.
  • PPF (µmol/s) is the total photosynthetic photon output leaving the fixture.
  • PPFD (µmol/m²/s) is the photon density reaching a specific plant surface at a stated height. It changes with hanging height, reflectors and the shape of the growing area.

Efficiency does not make electricity use zero. A high-output LED can draw more watts than a small fluorescent lamp while delivering substantially more light. Compare fixtures by the light level and coverage your plants need, not by wattage alone or by a marketing claim such as “equivalent to 600 watts.”

How much electricity does a grow-light schedule consume?

Long photoperiods can turn a modest fixture into a significant monthly load. University of Missouri Extension gives a lettuce daily-light-integral example using an 850 µmol/s PPF fixture, a 2.5 µmol/J efficacy value and an 8.6-hour schedule. The resulting electricity use is 2.92 kWh per day. Your result will differ if the fixture is dimmed, the schedule changes or the measured efficacy and wattage differ.

Use a simple schedule table before buying or expanding a setup:

Are LED grow lights cheaper than HPS or fluorescent lights?

LED systems usually have the lowest operating cost for comparable horticultural output, although they often cost more to purchase. University of Missouri Extension characterizes LED as the most energy-efficient option with a longer useful life, while HPS generally has a lower initial cost but higher long-term operating cost. Iowa State University Extension likewise rates LED highly for operating cost, efficiency, cool operation and lifespan; HID systems produce more heat and use more energy in its comparison guidance.

Technology Energy and output considerations Heat and life considerations Up-front cost pattern
LED Generally the most efficient option for comparable plant-usable light; evaluate PPE, PPF and PPFD. Usually cooler than HID, but drivers and room HVAC still consume energy. Good-quality white LED products are commonly described by DOE as having a 30,000–50,000-hour useful-life range. Usually higher initial investment.
HPS/HID Typically higher energy use for comparable horticultural output. Produces more heat, which can increase ventilation or air-conditioning demand. Often lower initial cost but higher operating cost over time.
Fluorescent Can suit low-intensity or small-area growing, but is generally less efficient than current high-quality LEDs for equivalent output. Lower heat than HPS, with useful life and ballast performance varying by product. Initial and operating costs vary by fixture and tube type.

There is no fair comparison based only on nominal watts. Match the illuminated area and target PPFD, then compare wall-plug watts, expected operating hours and cooling requirements.

Which specifications should I check before buying?

The following specifications reveal whether a fixture will meet your light target without unnecessary electricity use.

Actual input wattage

Look for “power draw,” “input power” or “watts used.” Treat an incandescent-equivalent figure as a brightness comparison, not an electrical measurement. If the manufacturer gives a range, identify whether it describes full-power draw or a dimmed setting.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

PPE, PPF and a PPFD map

A high PPE value is useful only when the fixture also provides enough total output and coverage. PPF tells you how many photons the fixture emits; a PPFD map shows how evenly those photons reach your plants at a specific hanging height. University of Missouri Extension recommends checking a PPFD map or using a quantum sensor at the intended height.

Coverage and dimming

Choose a fixture sized for the actual growing area. Oversizing and running at full power wastes energy; a dimmer lets you match output to seedlings, vegetative growth or flowering needs. Confirm that the dimmer controls electrical output rather than only changing a display or control signal.

Heat, fans and drivers

LED boards generally run cooler than HPS lamps, but the driver still produces heat. Active cooling fans draw electricity and may add noise. In a warm room, the air conditioner or exhaust system can erase part of the LED’s energy advantage, so include those loads in a whole-room estimate.

Useful life and controls

DOE gives 30,000–50,000 operating hours as a typical useful-life range for good-quality white LED products. Check the specific fixture’s warranty and whether its rating assumes a particular ambient temperature. A timer prevents accidental extra hours; some fixtures are sold with compatible scheduling accessories.

Specification Listed value Why it matters for electricity
Actual power draw 150 W Use this figure in the kWh formula.
PPE 2.3 µmol/J Indicates photon efficiency at the stated operating condition.
PPF 343 µmol/s Shows total photon output; compare with the area and target PPFD.
Core coverage 2-by-2 feet Helps prevent paying for output that falls outside the growing area.
Stated life 50,000 hours Affects replacement frequency and total cost of ownership, not the instantaneous watt draw.

At 12 hours daily, the listed 150-watt draw produces the 1.8 kWh-per-day example above. If you dim it, measure the new draw or use the manufacturer’s dimmed-wattage data rather than assuming it remains 150 watts.

How can I reduce unnecessary electricity use?

  1. Size the fixture to the canopy. Avoid lighting empty floor area. Use the manufacturer’s coverage guidance and confirm uniformity with a PPFD map or meter.
  2. Set the shortest effective photoperiod. A timer eliminates forgotten hours. Keep a written schedule when changing growth stages.
  3. Dim instead of over-lighting. Reduce output when plants require less intensity, and recheck PPFD after changing the dimmer or hanging height.
  4. Keep the fixture at its intended height. Moving a light too close can create hot spots and force you to dim or add cooling; moving it too far can waste photons outside the canopy.
  5. Account for secondary loads. Add fans, pumps, dehumidifiers and HVAC to your estimate when assessing the room’s total electrical demand.
  6. Use your utility’s cheapest suitable hours. On a time-of-use plan, schedule within lower-rate periods only if the plant schedule and temperature conditions allow it.

What mistakes make an LED setup cost more than expected?

  • Confusing equivalent watts with real watts: the equivalent number does not belong in the electricity formula.
  • Ignoring dimmer settings: a fixture may draw its full rated power unless the dimmer actually reduces driver output.
  • Comparing lumens instead of horticultural data: human-eye brightness does not show how many photosynthetic photons reach plants.
  • Buying more coverage than needed: excess output often becomes heat or light outside the canopy.
  • Forgetting cooling: a cooler-running LED reduces heat compared with HID, but it does not remove the need to budget for room ventilation or air conditioning.
  • Using a stale electricity rate: recalculate when your tariff, billing period or time-of-use schedule changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a grow-light timer reduce the light’s wattage?

No. A timer controls when the fixture is energized; it does not change the fixture’s power draw while it is on. Its savings come from preventing accidental extra operating hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use lumens to choose an energy-efficient grow light?

Lumens measure brightness for human vision and can misrepresent plant-usable light. For an electricity comparison, use wall-plug watts together with PPE, PPF and PPFD information.

Why can two LED fixtures with the same wattage produce different results?

Electrical watts describe input, not how efficiently photons are produced or distributed. Differences in PPE, optics, driver efficiency and coverage can change PPFD at the canopy even when the wall-plug draw is identical.

How do I include a time-of-use electricity plan in the calculation?

Split the daily schedule into the utility’s peak and off-peak periods. Calculate kWh for each period separately, multiply by that period’s rate and add the results for the day or billing cycle.
