Yes. Leica makes a medium-format camera system: the Leica S-System, currently represented on Leica’s official website by the 64-megapixel Leica S3. It is a specialized digital, DSLR-style platform with a 30 × 45 mm “Leica ProFormat” sensor—larger than full frame, but smaller than the 44 × 33 mm sensors common in Fujifilm GFX and Hasselblad X cameras.

The S3 remains officially presented and supported by Leica, although Leica’s public U.S. pages do not clearly establish current retail stock, production volume, or a live list price. That makes it a very different proposition from Leica’s more familiar M, Q, and SL cameras.
What is Leica’s medium-format camera?
The Leica S3 is Leica’s current medium-format camera, and it belongs to the Leica S-System rather than the M, Q, or SL families. Leica describes the system as its professional medium-format line. The current S-System page is available at Leica’s official S-System site.
#1 Best Overall
- The smallest, fastest and most versatile medium format camera on the market.
- Outstanding image quality wit new, improved imageing system components.
- Comprehensive portfolio of excellent Leica S lenses.
- Simple operation thanks to a refined, intuitive, joystick-based control concept.
- Video capture resolution: 240p
The S3 is a digital medium-format DSLR-style camera with a 30 × 45 mm sensor, 64-megapixel resolution, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Leica released it on March 6, 2020, replacing the previous 37.5-megapixel generation.
Leica still lists the S3 and maintains S-System service and accessories. Its service page says the system is distributed through qualified dealers and Leica Stores, but an official listing is not proof that a new body is readily available in every country. A successor has not been officially confirmed by the sources reviewed.
Why the S3 counts as medium format
“Medium format” describes sensor dimensions, not price, prestige, or megapixel count.
| Format | Approximate sensor size | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| Full frame | 24 × 36 mm | Leica M, Q, and SL |
| Leica ProFormat | 30 × 45 mm | Leica S3 |
| Modern mirrorless medium format | Approximately 33 × 44 mm | Fujifilm GFX and Hasselblad X |
| Larger digital medium format | Approximately 40 × 54 mm | Some high-end digital systems |
Leica says the S3’s sensor area is about 56% larger than a 24 × 36 mm full-frame sensor. It is therefore correctly called medium format, but it is not the largest medium-format sensor available. Sensor size can influence cropping latitude, depth-of-field options, and tonal rendering, yet lens choice, lighting, focus accuracy, subject distance, output size, and processing often matter more than format alone.

Leica S3 specifications
| Specification | Leica S3 |
|---|---|
| Camera type | Digital medium-format DSLR-style camera |
| Sensor | 30 × 45 mm |
| Resolution | 64 megapixels |
| Aspect ratio | 3:2 |
| ISO range | ISO 100–50,000 |
| Lens mount | Leica S mount |
| Weight | Approximately 1,260 g without battery |
| Protection | Dust and spray-water sealing |
| Video | Medium-format Cine 4K |
| Shutter | Focal-plane shutter; central shutter in selected lenses |
These specifications come from Leica’s S3 technical data sheet. Selected S lenses use central shutters that Leica says can synchronize flash up to 1/1000 second, compared with the focal-plane shutter’s stated 1/125-second synchronization limit. That distinction is particularly useful in studio work and bright outdoor portraiture.
Leica’s medium-format history
Leica’s important medium-format story is primarily digital. The S-System was designed as a dedicated digital platform, not as a conventional 120-film camera converted to digital use. Its body resembles a large 35mm DSLR more than a square-bodied Hasselblad V camera, and its native 3:2 format is familiar to photographers coming from 35mm.
The S3 was shown during photokina 2018 and released on March 6, 2020. Leica’s launch announcement describes the move from 37.5 megapixels to 64 megapixels and positions the S3 as the latest generation of the S medium-format system. The announcement is documented in Leica’s release notice.
How the S3 differs from Leica M, Q, and SL cameras
Leica’s current system-camera lineup separates the M, SL, and S systems; see the official system overview. Their high prices and resolutions do not make them interchangeable.

| System | Format | Design | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| M | Full frame | Manual-focus rangefinder | Deliberate still photography |
| Q | Full frame | Fixed-lens compact | Street, travel, and everyday work |
| SL | Full frame | Mirrorless | Professional photo and video |
| S | Medium format | DSLR-style | Studio, portrait, fashion, landscape, and fine art |
The SL3, for example, has a 60-megapixel full-frame sensor; the SL3-S has 24 megapixels and the SL3-P 44 megapixels. Leica identifies those models as full frame on its SL-System page. Resolution alone does not determine format.
Lenses, adapters, and the S-system commitment
The S3’s appeal depends heavily on its dedicated S lenses. Leica designed the mount and lenses as a professional system, with optical performance, robust construction, and central-shutter options in selected models at its center.
Leica also identifies adapter paths for Hasselblad H and Contax 645 lenses. Its accessory listings include S adapters for systems such as L, C, H, M645, and P67. See the current S accessories page and the S-System overview for the supported options.
Adapter compatibility does not guarantee autofocus, automatic aperture control, metadata, central-shutter operation, or complete electronic communication. Before buying a used body or lens, confirm the exact adapter, lens generation, firmware, and functions that remain available.

Where the Leica S3 makes sense
- Studio portraits and fashion: The 64-megapixel files, Leica S lenses, robust body, and central-shutter flash options suit controlled lighting.
- Commercial product work: Resolution and deliberate handling are valuable when lighting and camera position can be controlled.
- Landscape and fine art: The 3:2 medium-format frame and cropping latitude appeal to photographers who print large or work slowly.
- Leica-specific workflows: The strongest reason to choose the S3 is often the S lens rendering, construction, and DSLR-like shooting experience rather than a spreadsheet advantage in megapixels.
Where it is a less practical choice
- Fast-moving sports and wildlife, where newer mirrorless medium-format bodies generally offer more current autofocus and tracking tools.
- Video-first production, where modern mirrorless cameras usually provide a broader feature set and workflow.
- Travelers who prioritize low weight, easy rental, and immediate dealer availability.
- Buyers who want a large, actively expanding lens catalog, frequent body updates, or modern conveniences such as an electronic viewfinder, in-body stabilization, and advanced subject recognition.
Those are comparison points to investigate rather than blanket claims that every S3 function is absent. The S3 is a mature platform, so buyers should verify the features that matter to their own assignments.

Fujifilm’s GFX system is a modern mirrorless medium-format range with a broad GF lens lineup and bodies from approximately 50 to 100 megapixels, depending on model.
| Category | Leica S3 | Fujifilm GFX |
|---|---|---|
| Body design | DSLR-style | Mirrorless |
| Sensor | 30 × 45 mm | Typically about 33 × 44 mm |
| Lens ecosystem | Smaller and specialized | Broad and actively developed |
| Modern features | Mature platform | Generally stronger on newer bodies for autofocus, stabilization, and video |
| Primary appeal | Leica S lenses, handling, and 3:2 format | Choice, availability, and current mirrorless capability |
GFX is not automatically “better.” It is usually the more practical choice when ecosystem breadth, modern autofocus, stabilization, and new-product availability matter more than the S-System experience.
Leica S3 compared with Hasselblad X
Hasselblad’s current camera collection includes X and V systems, while the X System page centers on its modern mirrorless platform, including the X2D line. X System sensors are approximately 44 × 33 mm, and current flagship bodies reach 100 megapixels.

Buying a Leica S3 in 2026
Leica officially maintains the S-System, including support through qualified dealers and stores, and its accessory page still lists S3-compatible batteries and system components. However, the official U.S. pages reviewed do not state a dependable current retail price or guarantee new stock. Treat the S3 as officially supported but potentially niche and difficult to source.
Choose the S3 when
- You specifically want Leica S lenses and their rendering.
- You prefer a 3:2 medium-format frame.
- Your work is primarily studio, portrait, fashion, product, landscape, or fine art.
- You are comfortable with a mature DSLR-style system.
- You have confirmed a reliable authorized dealer or carefully inspected used example.
Prefer Fujifilm GFX when
- You want the broadest modern medium-format ecosystem.
- Autofocus, stabilization, video, and mirrorless handling are important.
- You want multiple new bodies and lenses across price levels.
- Availability and serviceability matter more than Leica-specific character.
Prefer Hasselblad X when
- You want a premium mirrorless medium-format experience.
- Leaf shutters and high-speed flash work are important.
- You value a current 100-megapixel option and Hasselblad’s color workflow.
Choose Leica SL instead when
- You want Leica’s modern mirrorless handling, autofocus, video, or L-Mount compatibility.
- You do not need the larger S3 sensor.
The SL remains full frame, so it is a Leica alternative, not a medium-format substitute.
