Dolly Madison’s Star is a pieced quilt block built around a nine-patch center and four star-point units. There is more than one way to make it: one tutorial offers finished sizes from 4½ to 18 inches using quarter-square triangles, while another gives a separate 18-inch construction. Choose a pattern version before cutting, because their instructions and pieces are not interchangeable.
Choose the pattern version and finished size
The finished size is the measurement of the block after it is sewn into a quilt, not the size of an untrimmed unit or the block including seam allowances. Generation Quilt Patterns provides cutting charts for 4½-, 9-, 13½-, and 18-inch finished blocks. Its tutorial uses quarter-square triangles around a nine-patch center. American Patchwork & Quilting provides a separate pattern for an 18-inch finished block, also with a nine-patch center and four pieced star-point units. The cutting instructions differ, so follow one version from its cutting chart through assembly rather than combining measurements.
| Pattern | Finished size options | Construction described | Cutting and trimming notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generation Quilt Patterns | 4½, 9, 13½, and 18 inches | Nine-patch center with quarter-square triangle units | Provides size-specific cutting charts; the tutorial trims quarter-square triangle units to size with a rotary cutter. |
| American Patchwork & Quilting | 18 inches | Nine-patch center, triangle-squares, four star-point units, and corner squares | Specifies yellow and white scraps and gives cutting quantities for its construction. |
Use the smaller options when a project calls for a compact block, or select 18 inches when you want the larger scale. The two 18-inch patterns are alternatives, not matching stages of a shared pattern: retain the cutting quantities and unit instructions belonging to the selected tutorial.

Make the block using one complete set of instructions
Generation Quilt Patterns version
- Choose the finished size—4½, 9, 13½, or 18 inches—and use the corresponding cutting chart on the Generation Quilt Patterns tutorial.
- Piece the quarter-square triangle units following that version’s instructions. Trim the units to size as directed; the tutorial uses a rotary cutter for this step.
- Piece the nine-patch center, then assemble it with the surrounding triangle units according to the tutorial’s layout.
American Patchwork & Quilting version
- Use the cutting quantities and yellow-and-white fabric layout specified in the American Patchwork & Quilting pattern for its 18-inch finished block.
- Assemble the nine-patch center, triangle-squares, star-point units, and corner squares in the sequence shown in that pattern.
These are summaries of the two constructions, not substitute cutting charts. Consult the linked pattern for its exact cut sizes, seam allowances, and assembly diagrams. The rotary-cutter trimming note belongs to the Generation Quilt Patterns method; it is not a universal requirement for every version.

Museum records show that the name was used for quilts and blocks across different periods, but they do not establish who invented the design or why it was named. The International Quilt Museum catalogs a hand-pieced cotton quilt called “Dolly Madison’s Star,” dated 1860–1880. It measures 72 by 65 inches; the catalog says it was possibly made in Lafayette, Indiana, so that location is not certain. The record assigns it Brackman number 2241. The Spencer Museum of Art lists a Dolly Madison’s Star block attributed to Carrie A. Hall among its early-1900s blocks. The Birmingham Museum of Art records a group of blocks dated about 1935–1940; its descriptive title includes Dolly Madison’s Star among other names, and the listed star measures 13 by 13 inches. These records document use of the name, but do not identify the design’s origin. Spencer Museum of Art collection record; Birmingham Museum of Art collection record
A Greenfield Historical Society quilt-barn account repeats a story connecting the pattern’s name to First Lady Dolley Madison, but the museum records cited here do not confirm that naming story or show that Madison designed or inspired the block. Treat the connection as unverified rather than as established history. International Quilt Museum collection record; Spencer Museum of Art collection record
