The Double Four-Patch version described here finishes at 8 inches and combines two four-patch units with two plain squares. Cut two 4½-inch cream squares and eight 2½-inch assorted-print squares, then sew the smaller squares into the four-patch units before assembling the block.

How the Double Four-Patch block is laid out
This version has a simple four-part arrangement: a four-patch unit beside a plain cream square in each row. The two rows are then joined to complete the block. Here, “double” refers to the two four-patch units—not four complete four-patch units.
The measurements below come from the 8-inch finished version published by the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors. Tutorials can use other block sizes and cutting schemes, so keep each pattern’s dimensions together rather than mixing cut sizes.

Fabric and cut sizes for the 8-inch version
- Cut two 4½-inch cream squares.
- Cut eight 2½-inch assorted-print squares.
The cited version calls for cream print and assorted print scraps. Scraps you already have can work for the assorted squares. A rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler are optional conveniences for cutting; a sewing machine, thread, iron, and ironing board are also listed in a separate Double Four Patch tutorial. No particular brand or model is required.
How to sew the block
- Make two four-patch units. Sew the eight assorted-print squares into four pairs. Press the seam allowances in each pair in opposite directions, then join the pairs to make two four-patches. The opposing seam directions help the allowances nest where the pairs meet.
- Make two rows. Sew one four-patch unit to one cream square. Repeat with the remaining unit and square.
- Join the rows. Sew the two pairs together to form the block, then press the final seam allowances in one direction.
Check the size before cutting
The 4½-inch and 2½-inch cuts belong to the cited 8-inch finished block. Other tutorials may use a different finished size, cut-square dimensions, fabric arrangement, or assembly method. Use the complete set of measurements and instructions from the version you choose; changing only one dimension can disrupt the block’s proportions.
