CapCut is available as a free download for Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and iPad. You can also use its video editor in a browser without installing anything. For painters, it is useful for turning studio footage into time-lapse videos, process reels, tutorial clips, palette demonstrations, and finished-work reveals.
Use the official CapCut website, Microsoft Store, Google Play, or Apple App Store. Avoid “modded” APKs and downloads claiming to unlock CapCut Pro: the official Android APK is only an installation package, not a free Pro edition.

For a long painting tutorial or high-resolution studio footage, the Windows or macOS desktop application is generally the more practical choice. For short clips recorded on a phone, the mobile app is quicker. The web editor is useful on a shared or low-storage computer, although some templates and features may not be available there.

Official website installer
- Open CapCut’s official website at capcut.com.
- Select Download.
- Choose Download for Windows.
- Open the downloaded CapCut_Setup.exe.
- Follow the installer prompts.
CapCut’s Windows requirements guide lists Windows 10 64-bit or later, at least 4 GB of RAM, and approximately 10 GB of free storage as baseline desktop requirements. Leave additional space available if you plan to import large camera files or export several versions of a painting video. Video projects and temporary render files can require considerably more room than the application itself.

Microsoft Store installation
- Open Microsoft Store from the Windows Start menu.
- Search for CapCut or CapCut Video Editor.
- Select the CapCut app.
- Click Install.
The Store route can simplify updates and avoids manually opening an installer. If CapCut does not appear, your Windows version, device, or Microsoft Store region may not be supported.
Download CapCut for macOS
- Go to CapCut’s official website.
- Click Download.
- Select the Mac version.
- Open the downloaded macOS installer and complete the prompts.
CapCut also has a Mac App Store listing. Its Mac App Store compatibility information requires macOS 10.14 or later. Check your Mac by opening Apple menu → About This Mac before downloading. A Mac with limited free storage may struggle when working with 4K footage, even if the application installs successfully.
Download CapCut for Android
Google Play method
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for CapCut – Video Editor.
- Check that the developer is Bytedance Pte. Ltd..
- Tap Install.
The Google Play version is the preferred Android installation route. It handles installation and future updates through the normal Android app system. The Google Play listing is free to download but includes in-app purchases.
Installing the official Android APK
An APK can be useful if Google Play is unavailable on your device or the Play Store cannot deliver the app in your region. Download it only from CapCut’s own domain:

- Visit capcut.com in your Android browser.
- Select Download.
- Choose Download Android APK.
- Open the downloaded APK.
- If Android asks whether Chrome or your file manager may install apps, enable the requested permission for that trusted app.
- Continue with the installation.
Android may display a warning such as “File might be harmful.” Proceed only if you downloaded the file directly from CapCut’s official website. Do not install an APK sent through an unknown link, file-sharing site, pop-up advertisement, or messaging app.
After installation, it is sensible to return to the relevant Android security settings and disable permission to install unknown apps if you do not need it again. The APK does not unlock CapCut Pro. Pro tools, premium materials, and other paid features remain controlled separately by CapCut, your account, platform, and region.
Download CapCut for iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Search for CapCut: Photo & Video Editor.
- Check that the publisher is BYTEDANCE PTE. LTD..
- Tap Get and authenticate with Apple when asked.
The U.S. App Store listing requires iOS 13 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 13 or later on iPad. It lists the app as free with in-app purchases and reports a download size of approximately 786.7 MB. Keep more free storage available than the listed size, particularly if you are editing long painting recordings.

- Open CapCut’s Online Video Editor.
- Select Sign up for free or Try online for free.
- Sign in and upload your clips.
The web editor can import files from a computer, CapCut Cloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or a QR code. This is a convenient option for a quick progress video, a vertical social clip, or a finished painting reveal when you do not want to install desktop software.

Web editing is not identical to desktop or mobile editing. Some templates and features depend on the platform, country, device, app version, and account. A template visible in a phone app may not be offered in the browser.
Sign in after installing CapCut
Mobile
Open CapCut, tap Log in, and select the method originally used for the account: TikTok, Google, email, or Facebook. Choosing a different method can create or open a different account, which may make cloud projects or a Pro subscription appear to be missing.
Windows and macOS
Open CapCut Desktop and click Sign in in the top-left corner. Desktop supports QR code, Facebook, Google, and TikTok sign-in. It does not support phone-number login. For QR sign-in, log in on your phone and scan the code displayed on the computer.

Update CapCut safely
Windows and macOS
- Open CapCut Desktop.
- Open Settings in the top-right corner.
- Select Version.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
CapCut may also show an upward-arrow update control in the top-right corner. Do not uninstall CapCut to perform an update: locally saved projects may be lost.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the top-right.
- Search for CapCut.
- Tap Update if it is available.
If the button says Open, the App Store considers the installed version current.
Android
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for CapCut.
- Tap Update if shown.
Android updates may roll out gradually, so another device or region may receive an update before yours.

Fix common CapCut download and installation problems

Practical CapCut setup for painting videos
Before editing, create a dedicated folder for the original footage and keep project files separate from exported videos. A simple structure such as Painting Project/Originals, Audio, and Exports makes it easier to return to a tutorial later.

For a painting time-lapse, import the full camera recording, remove pauses and setup footage, speed up the brushwork, and keep a few real-time moments where a technique needs explanation. Add short labels for the paint colour, brush, medium, or stage of the work. Export a vertical version for short-form platforms and a horizontal version for a longer tutorial rather than stretching one crop to fit every destination.
