The safest way to get the original Ubuntu 14.04 “Trusty” wallpapers is to use Ubuntu’s ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty package—not the complete Ubuntu 14.04 installation ISO. Ubuntu Packages lists the package as architecture-independent, with a current package build named ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty_24.04.2_all.deb. It is approximately 7.7 MB as a download and installs about 8.3 MB of artwork.

Install the Ubuntu 14.04 wallpapers with APT
On an Ubuntu or Debian-based system with the relevant Ubuntu package repositories available, run:

After installation, look in:
/usr/share/backgrounds/The desktop background selector may also display the Trusty choices automatically. The package includes trusty.xml, which defines the wallpaper choices, and trusty-wallpapers.xml, which integrates them with GNOME background settings.

This method is useful if you are using Windows or macOS, or if you want to copy the artwork manually rather than install an Ubuntu package.
- Obtain the Ubuntu Packages file named
ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty_24.04.2_all.debfrom one of the mirrors listed on the package download page. - Optionally verify that the downloaded file has this SHA-256 checksum:

mkdir ubuntu-14.04-wallpapers
dpkg-deb -x ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty_24.04.2_all.deb ubuntu-14.04-wallpapersThe extracted images will be in:
ubuntu-14.04-wallpapers/usr/share/backgrounds/A .deb file is an archive, so it can also be opened with a compatible archive utility on other operating systems. Extract the contents, follow the usr/share/backgrounds/ path, and copy the image files wherever you keep desktop backgrounds.
Verify the download on Linux

The filenames preserve the photographers’ names, which is useful when identifying or attributing an individual image.
Ubuntu 14.04’s visual style
Canonical’s March 2014 design article about the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS wallpaper described a move away from some earlier Ubuntu wallpaper treatments toward the Suru visual language. The stated direction emphasized simplicity, minimalism, strong colors, and graded flows.
That design discussion should not be confused with the complete contents of the Trusty wallpaper package. The package includes the main Ubuntu artwork and a broader set of community photographs, including the nature, landscape, abstract, and still-life images listed above.

Original Trusty source package
For historical provenance, Launchpad preserves the original Trusty source package version 14.04.0.1-0ubuntu1, uploaded on March 17, 2014. The archive includes the original source tarball, Debian source-control file, and patch archive, along with checksum information for the source material.
The original Launchpad source is mainly useful for archival research or verifying the history of the artwork. For an ordinary download, the newer ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty binary package is more convenient because it can be installed directly or extracted as an archive.
Do not download the full Ubuntu 14.04 ISO
Ubuntu’s release archive still contains historical Trusty installation images, but those are multi-gigabyte operating-system ISOs. Downloading one solely to obtain a few megabytes of wallpapers is unnecessary and considerably slower than downloading the dedicated wallpaper package.
Use the ISO only if you specifically need the historical Ubuntu 14.04 installation media. For wallpaper files, use the dedicated package instead.
Copyright and attribution
The package is an official Ubuntu distribution of the Trusty wallpapers, but that does not automatically mean every individual image may be reused for any commercial purpose. The package includes copyright and licensing information, and the image filenames retain photographer attribution.

Before redistributing, modifying, selling, or using an image commercially, inspect the copyright and license notices included with the package and follow the terms that apply to that specific artwork. If you publish an image or use it outside a personal desktop context, preserve the relevant attribution where the license requires it.

APT cannot find the package
Ubuntu 14.04 is an old, end-of-life release, and its original repositories are no longer handled like current Ubuntu repositories. If you are running Trusty itself and APT cannot locate the package, avoid changing repository sources casually on an important system. Download the package from the Ubuntu Packages archive and extract it manually instead, or use the archival source route through Launchpad.
The wallpaper does not appear in the desktop selector
Confirm that the files exist under /usr/share/backgrounds/. If necessary, open the desktop settings and add that directory or copy the desired image into your personal backgrounds folder, commonly ~/Pictures or a desktop-environment-specific backgrounds directory.
The checksum does not match
Delete the incomplete or suspicious download and obtain the package again from an official mirror listed by Ubuntu Packages. Do not rely on a file whose SHA-256 value differs from the published value.
I only need one JPG
Extract the package, open usr/share/backgrounds/, and copy the required image. There is no need to install Ubuntu or download the full Trusty ISO.
