To make ruffles with a serger, set differential feed above 1.0, then test the result on a scrap of the same fabric. The exact setting depends on your serger and material, so check your model’s manual before sewing the project piece.
How differential feed makes ruffles
A serger’s feed dogs move fabric through the machine. With differential feed set to 1.0, the front and rear feed dogs move at the same speed. Above 1.0, the front feed dogs move faster, feeding more fabric toward the stitch area than the rear dogs carry away. The excess fabric compresses into gathers.

Brother’s support guidance, dated August 8, 2017, describes settings above 1.0 as the gathering direction and settings below 1.0 as stretching. These ratios explain the mechanism; they are not a guaranteed setting for every serger or fabric. Follow your machine’s instructions.
Make a test ruffle before sewing your project
- Check your serger’s manual. Confirm how to adjust differential feed on your specific model and whether its instructions cover gathering.
- Use a scrap of the project fabric. Set differential feed above 1.0, following the manual’s guidance for your machine.
- Sew a test and inspect the gathers. If needed, adjust the setting according to the manual and test again. Do not assume one dial value or gathering ratio will suit every material.
- Once the test looks right, sew the project piece. Keep the machine settings that worked for the test fabric.
Watch out with thick, non-stretch fabrics
Brother cautions that differential feed may damage thick, non-stretchable materials such as denim. Check the instructions for your serger before trying to gather a fabric of this kind, and do not treat a successful test on another material as proof that denim is suitable.

Is a gathering foot necessary?
A gathering foot is an optional, model-dependent accessory, not a universal requirement established for all sergers. Brother lists a gathering foot among the accessories for its 1634D and describes that model as capable of making ruffles on knits and woven fabrics. That example does not establish compatibility with other Brother models or other brands. Check your manual or the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or attaching a foot.

What to look for if you are choosing a serger
For this technique, look for adjustable differential feed and model-specific instructions for gathering. Manufacturer descriptions show examples, not a ranking of sergers: Brother describes ruffling on knits and woven fabrics for its 1634D, while Singer says the S0080’s adjustable differential feed can create gathers. Results still depend on the model and material.
