Row 6 of Pat Sloan’s 2016 Mystery Row Quilt is a 9 × 60-inch row made from ten house-style blocks: four A blocks, three B blocks, and three C blocks. After assembling it, join all six rows to make the 60½ × 63½-inch quilt top, then layer, baste, quilt, and bind it.
Row 6 at a glance

- Fabric basis: the listed yardage and cuts assume 42 inches of usable fabric width and include quarter-inch seam allowances.
The pattern was designed by Pat Sloan using the Hometown Girl Batiks collection by Pat Sloan for Moda Fabrics. The full quilt has six rows, each with a different block design.

The cutting plan uses 3⅞-inch squares for half-square-triangle units, 2½-inch squares, and 2½-inch-wide rectangles in specified lengths. Cut each fabric according to the pattern’s fabric-by-fabric cutting list; the yardage alone does not determine the number and lengths of each piece.
Make the Row 6 blocks
1. Make the triangle-square units
Mark a diagonal on the cream squares. Pair them with the designated colored squares, sew two seams ¼ inch from either side of the marked line, then cut on the line. Press the resulting units open. These half-square triangles form the colored roofs in the house-style blocks.

2. Assemble blocks A, B, and C
Use the pattern’s block diagrams and color substitutions to assemble four A blocks, three B blocks, and three C blocks. The block types share a house-style structure, but their specified fabric placements differ; follow the diagrams rather than treating the colors as interchangeable.
3. Join the blocks into Row 6
Arrange the ten blocks in the pattern’s specified A–C sequence and join them into a row. Check that the row measures 9 × 60 inches finished before attaching it to the other rows.

Supplies for completing the quilt
- Backing fabric: 3⅞ yards.
- Batting: one 69 × 72-inch piece.
- Binding fabric: ⅝ yard, specified as light green batik.
- Binding strips: seven strips cut 2½ × 42 inches. The Row 6 instructions refer readers to the February issue for the light green binding yardage.
Join the rows and finish the quilt
- Join all six completed rows to form the quilt top. Press the row-joining seams in one direction. The finished quilt measures 60½ × 63½ inches.
- Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing, then baste the layers together.
- Quilt as desired. The published sample, quilted by Nancy Sharr, uses echoed swirls in an allover machine-quilting design; this is an example, not a required method.
- Bind the quilt with the light green batik binding strips.
Why the quilt uses repeated and simpler rows
Pat Sloan repeated Row 2 three times to create continuity across the quilt. The designer also notes that simpler spacer or blender rows can provide visual relief among more complex rows. This is the composition rationale for this quilt, not a rule that every sampler quilt needs repeated rows.
