The American Patchwork & Quilting “Easy Squares Quilt” is a small quilt measuring 34½ by 44½ inches when finished. It combines twelve large floral squares with sashing and a pieced border. Before cutting, check that this is the version you want: another design from Epida Studio shares the same name but uses a different block construction and fabric plan.

Which Easy Squares Quilt pattern is this?

This article covers the project titled “Easy Squares Quilt,” published by American Patchwork & Quilting on June 14, 2013. The project was inspired by “Motley Crew” by Jennifer Schifano Eutsler; American Patchwork & Quilting Editors are credited, with Mary Pepper as quilt tester. Its featured fabrics are from Michele D’Amore’s Floralicious collection for Benartex.

“Easy Squares” is a generic name, not a unique pattern title. Epida Studio’s separate tutorial makes a 36-by-48-inch quilt using strip-pieced smaller squares alongside larger squares. Its cutting plan and yardage do not apply to the American Patchwork & Quilting version.

Materials and finished size

The American Patchwork & Quilting pattern finishes at 34½ by 44½ inches. Its listed fabric quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric; the instructions use ¼-inch seam allowances.

Fabric or material Amount Use
Multicolor floral ¾ yard Quilt center
Black-and-white print 1¼ yards Sashing, border and binding
Multicolor plaid ¼ yard Sashing and border corners; extra may be needed to fussy-cut the desired plaid section
Backing fabric 1½ yards Quilt backing
Batting 43 by 53 inches Quilt layer

Cut the pieces

  • Floral: Cut twelve 8½-inch squares.
  • Black-and-white print: Cut five 2½-by-42-inch binding strips; two 3½-by-38½-inch border strips; two 3½-by-28½-inch border strips; and seventeen 2½-by-8½-inch sashing rectangles.
  • Plaid: Cut four 3½-inch border squares and six 2½-inch sashing squares.

A rotary cutter and quilting ruler can help make accurate cuts, but the pattern does not specify a particular brand or specialty tool.

Fabric Café Weekend 3-Yard Quilts Book – 8 Fast & Easy Beginner Quilt Patterns | Make a Quilt in a Weekend | Uses Only 3 Yards of Fabric | No Half-Square Triangles | Lap, Twin & Queen/King Sizes
  • Weekend 3-Yard Quilts by Fabric Café features eight fast quilt patterns designed so you can start sewing on Friday and finish your quilt top by Sunday.
  • Each pattern uses three one-yard cuts of coordinating fabric to create a lap-size quilt, making these patterns budget-friendly and perfect for quick projects.
  • Simple construction, minimal seam matching, and easy piecing make these designs ideal for beginner quilters or anyone looking for a relaxing sewing project.
  • All patterns avoid half-square triangles and instead use efficient techniques such as strip piecing and stitch-and-flip construction to save time while sewing.
  • Instructions are included to enlarge each quilt design from lap size to Twin and Queen/King sizes.

Assemble the quilt top

  1. Arrange the center. Lay out the twelve floral squares, seventeen black-and-white sashing rectangles and six plaid sashing squares as seven horizontal rows, following the pattern’s layout.
  2. Sew the rows. Join the pieces in each row with ¼-inch seams. Then sew the rows together to make a center measuring 28½ by 38½ inches, including seam allowances.
  3. Add the long borders. Sew the two 3½-by-38½-inch black-and-white strips to the long sides of the center.
  4. Piece and attach the other borders. Sew a plaid 3½-inch square to each end of each remaining 3½-by-28½-inch black-and-white strip. Attach these pieced borders to the remaining sides.

Layer, quilt and bind

Place the assembled quilt top with the batting and backing, baste the layers, then quilt as desired. Finish by binding the edges with the five prepared black-and-white strips. The batting cut size is larger than the finished quilt so it can extend beyond the top during assembly and quilting.

How the other same-name design differs

Epida Studio’s tutorial is a separate pattern rather than an alternate cutting plan for this quilt. The comparison helps prevent mixing its materials or block instructions into the 34½-by-44½-inch project.

Feature American Patchwork & Quilting Epida Studio tutorial
Finished size 34½ by 44½ inches 36 by 48 inches
Construction Twelve large squares framed with sashing and borders Twenty-one 6½-inch squares in one fabric, plus strip-pieced smaller squares in two other colors
Fabric plan ¾ yard floral, 1¼ yards black-and-white print and ¼ yard plaid, plus backing and batting 1 yard for the larger squares and ½ yard each for two other colors; a scrappy option is also described
Size expansion No size-expansion resource stated Epida Studio’s related “Choose Your Own Adventure Easy Squares Quilt” ebook says it includes more than forty size options

Adapting the design for feature fabric

Square size and contrast affect how much of a print remains visible and how clearly the sashing separates pieces. In a separate Epida Studio example, a maker used 8-inch large squares and four-patch units to make a 40-by-56-inch quilt, choosing larger squares so a unicorn print would not be cut into smaller fragments. That is an adaptation of Epida Studio’s design, not a revised cutting plan for the American Patchwork & Quilting pattern. Changing square size changes the overall plan and the fabric needed.
