Eid Milad-un-Nabi, also called Mawlid al-Nabi or Milad un-Nabi, commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. It is associated with Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, but Muslims differ on whether and how to observe it. Its Gregorian date can also vary by community calendar and local moon-sighting practice.
What does Eid Milad-un-Nabi commemorate?
The name refers to the Prophet Muhammad’s birth. The occasion is also known as Mawlid al-Nabi and Milad un-Nabi. The Australian Government’s Department of Education describes it as a commemoration observed by many Muslim communities, while emphasizing that practice is not universal: “There is diversity within Muslim communities in how, and whether, Mawlid is observed.”
When is Eid Milad-un-Nabi?
Mawlid is linked to Rabi al-Awwal. Many Sunni Muslims associate it with the 12th day of the month, while many Shia Muslims commemorate the Prophet’s birth on the 17th. Communities may follow different calendars or moon-sighting practices, so the corresponding Gregorian date is not the same everywhere.

No. Muslim religious authorities and communities hold differing views. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta presents commemoration as permissible when its activities are lawful, and describes devotional remembrance and charitable food. IslamQA argues against treating a birthday celebration as a prescribed religious festival and regards it as a later innovation. Those are attributed positions, not a single ruling shared by all Muslims.

Historical accounts also differ. A scholarly chapter published by Brill examines competing opinions about the observance’s origins; the available evidence does not establish one simple, universally agreed starting date.

That depends on the country and local authority. A national calendar listing does not by itself tell you whether a particular school, employer or service will close. Confirm with the institution or local government where you live; in the United States, official holiday observance is determined at the local level.
