Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated every August 17, marking the 1945 proclamation of independence by Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta. The date commemorates the proclamation itself; the first president and vice president were appointed and the Constitution was enacted the following day, August 18.

Why is Indonesian Independence Day on August 17?

On August 17, 1945, Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesia’s independence. Indonesia’s National Archives (ANRI) distinguishes that proclamation from the next day’s constitutional and government milestones: on August 18, Soekarno and Hatta were appointed the republic’s first president and vice president, and the Constitution was enacted. ANRI’s historical account records the chronology.

What does the red-and-white flag have to do with the day?

The flag is closely tied to the founding moment. According to an ANRI historical paper, Fatmawati, Soekarno’s wife, sewed the first “Sang Merah Putih” flag. It was raised at Soekarno’s house at Pegangsaan Timur 56 in Jakarta after he read the proclamation. The archival account says the original flag was flown at annual ceremonies after the war with the Dutch and last used in 1968; a replica was used afterward because the heritage flag was considered too fragile. Read ANRI’s paper on the flag’s history.

How does Indonesia celebrate Independence Day?

National observances center on the flag and formal ceremonies. Public festivities and the official program can differ from year to year, so a particular year’s locations, activities, and theme should not be treated as a permanent holiday schedule.

The official program announced for 2026

For the 81st anniversary in 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of State Secretariat announced the proclamation ceremony and flag-lowering ceremony at Merdeka Palace on August 17, with more than 8,100 participants expected. Its plans also included a public festival at Monas running from morning to night, with Independence Day competitions, children’s activities, entertainment, drone displays, video mapping, wayang drama, fireworks, and free food. A Merdeka Run was listed with 5 km, 8.1 km, and 10 km categories. These were announced plans for 2026, not a fixed program for every August 17. See the ministry’s 2026 program announcement.

The 2026 theme

The ministry announced “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur,” translated as “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia,” as the theme for the 2026 anniversary. Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro announced it at a July 31, 2026 press conference. This is the theme for that year, not a timeless name for the holiday. The ministry’s theme and logo announcement provides the official wording.
