The “Eid moon” is the new crescent associated with an Islamic month: sighting or establishing the start of Shawwal marks Eid al-Fitr, while the start of Dhul Hijjah sets the calendar context for Eid al-Adha. There is no single sighting method or worldwide announcement that every Muslim community follows, so a visibility forecast is not necessarily the date your mosque or religious authority will observe.

What does “Eid moon” mean?
It usually means the crescent moon used to establish the beginning of a Hijri lunar month associated with an Eid. The crescent marking Shawwal signals the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr. The beginning of Dhul Hijjah establishes the month in which Eid al-Adha falls; its dates also determine the period relevant to qurbani.

People may use “Eid moon” to ask either when the crescent might be visible or which day their community will celebrate. Those are related but distinct questions: astronomy can estimate visibility, while a religious or official authority determines which evidence and procedure it follows.

How is the beginning of the month established?
Physical sighting and calculation together
Malaysia describes its national method for Ramadan and Eid as combining physical crescent sighting (rukyah) with astronomical calculation (hisab). The procedure uses designated observation places and agreed crescent-visibility criteria. This is a national example, not a universal standard. Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development explains its method.
Rules of a particular religious authority
The Office of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani states: “Sighting of the new moon is ascertained by knowledge of the actual sighting or through solid news of such sighting, or some other means.” Its published answer lists direct unaided sighting, qualifying witness testimony, completion of thirty days, and widespread reports that produce certainty among the ways its followers may establish a new month. It also says binocular or telescope sighting is not accepted under that ruling. These are Sistani’s stated standards; they should not be applied to Muslims generally. Astronomical visibility forecasts
Forecasts can show when a crescent is likely to be visible from particular places, helping people plan observations or anticipate an announcement. The UK government publishes city-specific information, including sunset and moonset timings and likely dates for naked-eye visibility. Its new-moon visibility guidance is organized by city. A forecast describes expected visibility; by itself, it does not establish the religious date for every community.
Why can Eid dates differ by place or community?
Authorities may differ in whether they require a physical sighting, accept calculations, combine methods, or rely on reports from a defined geographic area. They may also apply different religious evidentiary rules or refer to a sighting elsewhere. For example, Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta has a fatwa addressing the date of Arafat and Eid al-Adha that uses the moon sighting in Mecca as its reference. Geography matters to visibility, but it does not alone explain every difference: the deciding authority’s rules and reference area matter too. The Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub distinguishes calculated dates from formal decisions, stating that “the official announcement of the beginning of Hijri months and religious occasions remains the exclusive jurisdiction of the relevant official and religious authorities in the country.” See the Hub’s astronomy information.
How to check the date you should follow
- Identify the community or authority you follow. Check its mosque, national religious body, or other relevant authority rather than assuming a date announced elsewhere applies to you.
- Separate estimates from decisions. Treat an astronomy calendar or visibility forecast as a planning estimate unless the relevant authority has issued its official announcement.
- Confirm the year and location. Hijri months move through the Gregorian calendar, and local announcements can vary. Check current guidance for your jurisdiction and year.
- For Eid al-Adha, check Dhul Hijjah guidance as well. The month’s dates provide the calendar context for Eid and the qurbani period; consult the authority or organization whose guidance you rely on.
Recent examples are not recurring dates
Published dates illustrate why year and jurisdiction need to be stated. Jordan’s General Iftaa Department identified 30 March 2025 as the first day of Shawwal and Eid al-Fitr in its resolution for 1446 AH. For 2026, the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub projected 27 May as Eid al-Adha in the UAE while noting that official announcements belong to the relevant authorities; Islamic Relief’s 2026 Dhul Hijjah information also listed 27 May as an expected Eid al-Adha date. These are dated examples and should not be treated as a standing calendar rule or a binding worldwide date.
