Evening Glow is a Sarah J. Maxwell quilt pattern built from Star and 16-Patch blocks in sunset-inspired fabrics. Its main version finishes at 84 1/2 inches square, and the pattern lists three additional sizes. The six-week quilt-along ran from October 28 to December 8, 2024, so the AllPeopleQuilt project page is now an archive and project guide, not an active sew-along.
What is the Evening Glow quilt?
Designed by Sarah J. Maxwell, Evening Glow combines Star and 16-Patch blocks into a bed quilt. The featured collection is At Day’s End by Sarah J. Maxwell of Designs by Sarah J for Andover Fabrics. The project appeared through AllPeopleQuilt and American Patchwork & Quilting; its archived project page includes the quilt-along schedule, size options, fabric requirements and palette examples. See the Evening Glow project page.

What sizes does the pattern make?
| Version | Finished size |
|---|---|
| Table Topper | 36 1/2 inches square |
| Throw | 60 1/2 inches square |
| Main quilt | 84 1/2 inches square |

These are the finished dimensions listed by the project page. The materials below are specifically for the 84 1/2-inch version; use the pattern’s instructions for the cutting and quantities required for another size.
Fabric and batting for the 84 1/2-inch quilt
| Material | Amount and use |
|---|---|
| Assorted medium and dark prints | 22 fat quarters (18 × 21 inches), for Star and 16-Patch blocks |
| Gray raindrop print | 1 yard, for Star blocks |
| Blue print | 3/4 yard, for Star and 16-Patch blocks |
| Navy geometric print | 3/4 yard, for Star and 16-Patch blocks |
| Navy arc print | 1 yard, for Star and 16-Patch blocks and binding |
| Gray geometric print | 1 1/4 yards, for Star blocks |
| Gray floral | 1 5/8 yards, for Star blocks |
| Backing fabric | 7 3/4 yards |
| Batting | 93-inch square |
The list follows the quantities and uses given for the main quilt on the official project page. It does not identify a generic fat-quarter bundle as an exact substitute for At Day’s End. If you choose other fabrics, compare their light-to-dark contrast and palette, then follow the pattern’s cutting instructions to confirm the pieces can be cut as intended.

How to choose a color palette
The project’s examples show several ways to interpret the design, rather than one required color scheme:

- High contrast: bright fabrics framed with gray and black make the value differences a defining feature.
- Softer colors: softer prints paired with black chain units keep contrast in the layout while changing the overall mood.
- Scrappy: different fabrics can be used in the 16-block units, while repeating fabrics in the stars and chain helps the quilt feel coordinated.
- Dark blue: a dark-blue ground with white stars and squares offers a cooler, more restrained direction.
For another documented color option, quilt maker Bethany Peterson made a version she called “Winter Night” using Chill by Zen Chic. The project page credits Short Story Longarm Quilting for the machine quilting and notes a gray cuddle backing and the Waves pantograph by Pro Stitcher.

Where can you get the pattern?
The publisher lists three formats: the December 2024 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting, an individual PDF download or printed pattern, and a digital December 2024 issue through Zinio. The project page recommends the Zinio issue for international readers. Availability and prices can change, so check the publisher’s current listings before ordering. The APQ Shop catalogue also identifies the December 2024 issue as containing Sarah J. Maxwell’s Evening Glow quilt-along project.
A Serendipity Woods listing described a scrappy kit with APQ Issue 191 and fabrics for the quilt top, including binding, but not backing. Its page showed the kit as sold out when indexed, so it establishes that a kit was offered—not that one is currently in stock. Check the retailer’s listing for current status.
