Star Block Table Toppers is a roundup of 23 tabletop quilt projects from AllPeopleQuilt, credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors. It is a collection of individual patterns—not one universal table-topper pattern—so choose a design first, then use that pattern’s instructions and supply list.
What the roundup includes
The collection covers table runners, table toppers and small tabletop quilts built around star-block designs. The featured styles include Sawtooth Star, LeMoyne Star, Friendship Star and Shoofly Star, alongside projects using patriotic colors, batiks, reproduction fabrics, florals and high-contrast backgrounds.
#1 Best Overall
Because every entry is its own project, finished dimensions, yardage, cutting instructions, quilting plans and notions can differ. Open the individual pattern before buying fabric or tools.
How to choose a star table topper
Start with the finished form
| Form | Best selection question |
|---|---|
| Table runner | Will the long, narrow layout fit the table while leaving usable space at each end? |
| Table topper | Do you want a compact centerpiece for a dining table, side table or entry table? |
| Tabletop quilt | Would a larger quilted surface suit the table and the amount of display space available? |
Match the star design to your preference
- Sawtooth Star: a familiar star silhouette with points that can read clearly against a contrasting background.
- LeMoyne Star: a more angular, geometric look.
- Friendship Star: a traditional block suitable for coordinated repeated layouts.
- Shoofly Star: another classic block option when you want a more traditional patchwork character.
Plan the color and contrast
Color is part of how each project’s stars appear. The roundup describes designs using prints, batiks, reproduction fabrics, florals and strong background contrasts. A dark star on a light background, or the reverse, can make points easier to see; closely related values create a softer, more blended effect. Use the chosen pattern’s cover image and fabric notes as your visual guide rather than assuming every project follows the same palette.

Check the construction method
At least one project with little 3-inch-square Sawtooth Star blocks allows either traditional piecing or a foundation-piecing pattern. If you prefer paper piecing for accuracy on small points, choose that option where the pattern provides it. Otherwise, follow the method specified by the individual project.

Fabric and tool planning
Quilting cotton is the clearest fabric choice for these projects because the descriptions refer to quilting prints, batiks and background fabrics. There is no single required brand, fabric weight, yardage or kit for all 23 entries.
Rank #3
- Read the selected pattern’s fabric requirements before purchasing a bundle or individual cuts.
- Confirm whether the design calls for a distinct background fabric and separate star points.
- Buy enough fabric for the stated cutting plan, including any directional-print considerations noted in the pattern.
- Use a rotary cutter and quilting ruler only when the chosen instructions call for them.
- Use foundation-piecing paper when selecting the project’s foundation-piecing option; it is not a universal requirement for the roundup.
A practical selection workflow
- Open the AllPeopleQuilt roundup and shortlist projects by runner, topper or tabletop-quilt format.
- Compare the star block, fabric palette and background contrast in the project images and description.
- Choose a construction method that matches your experience and the pattern’s available options.
- Open the individual pattern linked from the roundup and record its finished size, fabric quantities, batting, backing, binding and quilting requirements.
- Gather only the tools and materials listed for that project, then follow its cutting and assembly sequence.
What this page can—and cannot—provide
This roundup is useful for finding a star-themed tabletop project, not for supplying one standardized set of instructions. The linked individual pattern is the authority for measurements, templates, fabric quantities, seam allowances, pressing directions and finishing steps. If you need to make a specific star block table topper, select the design first and then work from that project’s complete pattern.
