Excalidraw is a free, open-source editor for making diagrams, wireframes and visual notes on an infinite canvas with a hand-drawn look. You can sketch a quick idea, export it as an image, or save the editable scene. The hosted Excalidraw.com app adds browser-based collaboration and local autosave; Excalidraw+ is a separate paid workspace for cloud saving and team features.
What is Excalidraw?
Excalidraw is a virtual whiteboard and diagram editor built around an informal, hand-drawn visual style. Its infinite canvas suits flowcharts, UML diagrams, wireframes, meeting notes and other visuals where a sketch-like appearance is useful. The official site also names brainstorming, interviews and presentations among its use cases. The project’s GitHub README describes the open-source editor and its features.

The editor includes common shapes, free drawing, arrows with labels and shape binding, images, shape libraries, dark mode, zoom and pan, and undo and redo. That makes it useful both for rough thinking and for diagrams you want to share. The visual style is intentionally sketch-like rather than a polished technical-drawing convention.
How do I use Excalidraw for a quick diagram?
- Start with the idea. Open the editor and place a few shapes on the canvas to represent the main objects or steps.
- Label the parts. Add text to shapes, then use arrows to show sequence, direction or relationships. Arrow binding keeps a connector attached to a shape as you move it.
- Refine the layout. Add freehand marks, images or items from a shape library as needed; pan and zoom across the canvas while you work.
- Choose how to keep or share it. Export an image for viewing elsewhere, or keep an editable scene file if you expect to revise the diagram.
How do I save or export an Excalidraw drawing?
Excalidraw supports PNG and SVG image exports, clipboard export, and the editable .excalidraw JSON format, according to the official repository README. Use PNG or SVG when you need a finished visual for a document, slide or message. Use the JSON scene file when preserving the objects and structure for further editing matters. An exported image is a picture of the drawing, not a substitute for the editable scene.

On Excalidraw.com, the README documents autosaving in the browser’s local storage. That is distinct from cloud storage: local browser saving does not by itself mean a scene is stored in a team workspace or available on another device. Excalidraw+ lists cloud saving as a workspace feature.
Can you collaborate in Excalidraw?
Yes, the hosted Excalidraw.com app supports real-time collaboration. The project README also describes end-to-end encryption and shareable read-only links, and says the app can work offline as a progressive web app. Those are features of the hosted app; do not assume they are automatically included when embedding or using the Excalidraw npm package in another product.

For a shared scene that others can view without editing, use a read-only link. For simultaneous work, use the hosted collaboration experience. The README documents these capabilities but does not establish that every sharing or access setup suits every organization’s requirements.
Is Excalidraw free?
The core editor is free and open source. The hosted app is a separate product surface, and Excalidraw+ is an optional paid workspace. The official Excalidraw+ pricing page, checked on October 4, 2026, listed Free as “Free forever” and Plus at USD $6 per user per month. Prices and plan details can change.

The Free and Plus feature lists reflect the pricing page at the time checked. That page also marked PDF and PPTX export as new; check the current plan page if those formats matter to your workflow.
When is Excalidraw+ worth considering?
Consider Plus if your work depends on cloud-saved scenes, organizing many scenes and folders, team access controls, or its expanded collaboration and presentation features. The free editor or hosted app may be sufficient for a quick diagram, local browser-based work, exports or a read-only share. The choice is mainly about workspace, persistence and team needs—not whether you can draw a basic diagram.

Can Excalidraw connect to other tools?
The project lists a VS Code integration route and an npm package for developers, and names ecosystem examples including Obsidian Excalidraw, Notion, Replit and CodeSandbox. These are integration examples, not claims of endorsement or commercial partnership. Check the relevant project’s current documentation to confirm what a particular integration supports.
What about AI features?
Excalidraw’s current marketing describes text-to-diagram and wireframe-to-code features, and says MCP can let an agent draw in an Excalidraw+ workspace. The pricing page distinguishes limited generative AI on Free from extended AI on Plus. These capabilities and plan boundaries can change, so check the current Excalidraw+ site and pricing page before relying on a specific AI feature.
