To draw a fishing pole, sketch a long, tapered rod, attach a short grip and reel near its wider end, then add small guides and a fine line leading to a hook. Start lightly in pencil so you can adjust the shape before darkening the finished drawing.

What you need

  • Paper, a pencil and an eraser.
  • Optional: a ruler or straightedge for the rod, plus colored pencils, crayons or markers.

A book edge or piece of cardboard can stand in for a ruler, and any coloring tools you already have will work. See the beginner materials and substitutions at DIY.org.

How to draw a fishing pole step by step

  1. Sketch the rod

Choose a diagonal direction across the page and leave room beyond the tip for the fishing line and hook. Lightly draw two long sides that taper from a wider base to a narrow tip. Keep the rod nearly straight, or give it a gentle curve for a more natural silhouette.

  2. Add the handle

At the wider end, draw a short, rounded grip. Make it visibly thicker and much shorter than the long rod blank so the two parts read clearly.

  3. Attach a reel

Place a compact reel below or beside the rod near the grip. For a simple version, use an oval or circle, add a smaller shape inside it, then draw a short reel handle. Keep it attached to the rod rather than floating nearby. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s spincast guide labels parts including the reel seat, line opening and reel handle, which can help you check their arrangement.

  4. Draw the line guides

Add a row of small loops along the rod, spacing them out and making them smaller toward the tip. These guides should sit on the rod, not beside it.

  5. Thread the line and add a hook

Draw a thin line from near the reel, through the guides and out past the tip. Let it curve down toward a small J-shaped hook or a simple lure. Add a bobber if you want another recognizable detail; the Illinois Department of Natural Resources beginner guide labels a rod, guide, reel, bobber and cane pole.

  6. Refine and finish

Adjust the outline, then darken the marks you want to keep and erase construction lines. Color the handle, rod, reel or lure if you like. Add water or a fish only if you want the picture to show a scene.

Keep the drawing simple or add detail

For the easiest version, draw a single tapered rod shape, a circle-and-handle reel and a small hook. To make the pole more recognizable, add the guides and show the line passing through them. A slightly bent rod, short grip and compact reel are enough to suggest the shape without crowding it with tiny mechanical details. The parts and proportions in this sequence are also shown in EasyLineDrawing’s step-by-step guide and Really Easy Drawing Tutorial.
