In a glass-walled Marin County Eichler, custom terrazzo does more than cover the floor: its colored aggregate gives the rooms a quiet, cohesive palette. Interior designer Lauren Geremia used that starting point to move beyond a textbook midcentury look toward what she called “an Eichler that explored femininity and nature and softness.”
How the terrazzo anchors the palette
From across a room, the hand-poured floor reads as quiet. Up close, Geremia says, it is “kind of like sand,” with color and movement in the aggregate. Rather than treating the floor as a bold graphic statement, the design lets its small shifts of color recur elsewhere in the house.
Geremia described the custom terrazzo as the palette’s “launchpad”: its aggregate picks up colors used around the interiors. A brass grid, inspired by Mondrian, reinforces that relationship by aligning with window jambs, cabinetry, and door openings. The result connects the floor’s pattern to the architecture instead of leaving it as an isolated motif. The Architectural Digest feature does not identify the terrazzo formula, manufacturer, or installation system.
Why softness matters in a glass-walled Eichler
The renovation preserves the home’s defining experience of light, views, and connections between rooms. Extensive glazing also leaves relatively little conventional wall space, so materials carry more of the work of giving the rooms texture and character. Geremia described the desired contribution as “that sensibility, that texture, that hand.”

To balance the glass and harder surfaces, the interiors layer upholstery, wool bedding, and woven rugs with wood and other tactile finishes. The palette draws on both warm and cool notes: terra-cotta upholstery and walnut sit alongside pale blue upholstery, softer blues and greens, stainless steel, reflective metalwork, and glass. Their contrast keeps the scheme from resolving into a single midcentury color formula.
How the palette continues through the house
Several materials extend the floor’s earthy tones without matching it literally. ExCinere volcanic-ash tile at the chimney adds a warm, dark anchor; Tanzania onyx in the bath brings rust-and-cream veining. White Pumice tile by Heath Ceramics appears in the primary bath, while cranberry Heath tile around the pool echoes the chimney tile’s warmth.

That repetition carries the interior’s colors outdoors. Terremoto reshaped the backyard into outdoor rooms around the pool and entertaining areas, while mature agaves in the front yard remained. The effect is continuity between house and landscape, rather than a palette confined to the rooms.

The project was not simply a cosmetic refresh. The owners bought the atrium-model Eichler in 2011, moved to Seattle in 2019 while keeping it, and later returned wanting to preserve the experience of living there—not just the existing interiors. Geremia Design led the interiors, Marsden Architects handled architecture, Terremoto reworked the landscape, and Range Builders built the renovation.

Once the roughly 60-year-old structure was opened up, the team found essentially no rebar in the original foundation. They lifted the house to pour a new foundation and rebuilt plumbing, electrical, and drainage systems. The 1,800-square-foot layout was reconfigured, part of the garage became an office, and the primary bath gained double sinks and a water closet, according to Architectural Digest’s October 6, 2026 feature.

This home offers a way to think about terrazzo as a palette anchor, not a rulebook. Start with the floor’s overall impression from a distance, then consider the colors and movement visible close up. Repeat selected notes in other materials, and let contrast—warm against cool, reflective against tactile—give the scheme depth.

- Use repetition selectively: echo a few tones from the aggregate in upholstery, tile, stone, or wood rather than trying to match every fleck.
- Consider viewing distance: a floor that reads quietly across a room can still contribute color and movement at close range.
- Balance hard and soft: in a glass-heavy space, textiles and textured finishes can add the material character that large expanses of wall might otherwise provide.
- Look beyond the room: repeated warm or cool notes can link interiors to a garden, terrace, or pool area.
Those are observations from one custom renovation, not installation instructions. The feature does not provide the floor’s color codes, composition, thickness, sealer, maintenance routine, cost, or performance data.
