A fabric jellyfish installation can be a lightweight hanging craft, a textile sculpture, or a commissioned display designed for a room. For a small piece, shape a shell over a balloon, let it dry fully, then add flowing tentacles and a hanging loop. A larger installation needs a supported form and a suspension plan suited to its venue; a craft loop is not a rigging specification.
Choose the kind of jellyfish installation you’re making
The right construction depends on scale and purpose. A classroom or home craft can use a paper shell and simple string loop. A textile sculpture can combine a stiffened fabric form with a sheer lining and lightweight streamers. A room-scale display may need custom-supported domes, carefully planned sightlines, and professional installation.

How do you make a hanging fabric jellyfish?
The Museum of Craft and Design’s “Jammin’ Jellyfish” activity is an accessible way to build a small hanging form. It recommends the activity for ages 4 and up with adult supervision. Its method makes a paper-mache shell rather than a fabric shell, but the tentacles can be fabric or other lightweight materials.

Materials
- Balloon, one for each jellyfish
- Paper ephemera and napkins
- Liquid glue and water
- Bowls and a paintbrush
- Scissors
- For the tentacles: craft ribbon and tulle, or yarn/string and fabric strips
- For the hanging loop: pipe cleaner or string, plus a bead if using string
Build the shell
- Inflate the balloon to the size you want and rest it in a bowl to keep it steady.
- Mix equal parts water and liquid glue. Cover the balloon with small paper pieces, either dipping the paper into the mixture or laying it on the balloon and brushing the mixture over it. Keep the area around the knot clear. A napkin foundation can help support fragile tissue paper.
- Leave the paper shell until it is completely dry. Do not remove the balloon while the shell is damp.
- Decorate the dry shell. Carefully deflate the balloon by cutting below the knot, then trim the shell’s rim.
- Attach ribbon, tulle, yarn/string, or fabric strips around the rim with tape or glue. Keep the strips light enough for the paper shell.
- Make a small hole at the top. Secure a pipe cleaner or string as a loop; if using string, a bead or knot on the inside can help hold it in place.
The Museum of Craft and Design’s activity gives the full craft method and age guidance: Jammin’ Jellyfish. This simple loop is for a lightweight craft, not for suspending a larger artwork from a building ceiling.
How a fabric-led jellyfish sculpture differs
Textile artist Judy Villett describes a different process in The Jellyfish Project. She formed hand-crocheted doilies over bowls, tested liquid stiffeners, and settled on GAC 400, which she describes as an acrylic polymer that dries to a hard film. She attached gathered sheer-fabric linings with hand stitches, then added lightweight silk, ribbon, yarn, and paper streamers by stitching or knotting them around the edges and centers.

In Villett’s project, nylon fishline through the top attached each jellyfish to a metal grid. That is a record of her particular artwork, not a general suspension recipe. Her 2024 exhibition, held June 1–July 14, used translucent and white collected plastics overhead as part of an environmental narrative. The artist’s statement that “The beautiful jellyfish might be a symptom of an ailing ocean environment” is an artistic interpretation, not a scientific finding. What changes when the display gets larger?
A larger display is not simply a small craft made bigger. The shell needs to retain its shape, tentacles need to move without overwhelming the form, and the work must be designed for the room and its viewing angles. A John Lewis retail display documented by Asylum Models & Effects used formed plastic domes upholstered in fabric, varied tentacle designs, and mirrors beneath the pieces so visitors could see the textiles from below.

The reported domes in that project ranged from 40 cm to 125 cm wide. Those are dimensions from one display, not standard sizes or structural guidance. - Support: Decide how the shell will hold its shape before choosing its exterior fabric.
- Movement: Choose tentacle length and material with the room’s airflow and the piece’s scale in mind.
- Viewing: Consider what people will see from below, from the sides, and at a distance; mirrors were part of the John Lewis display’s viewing strategy.
- Site requirements: For venue-scale work, consult the venue and a qualified local installer or engineer about suspension and applicable requirements. The craft activity and case studies do not establish safe anchors, load limits, or venue-code compliance.
Can a jellyfish installation move or respond to light?
Yes, but motion and responsive lighting turn a decorative textile piece into a coordinated design-and-build project. Martina Wylie Studio’s 2018 Frillish explored a slip-gear mechanism for bobbing movement, alongside sensors that responded to light and physical touch with changes in color and motion. Its two-week collaborative process involved more than 100 Master of Architecture students and explored fabric, gravity, simple electronics, Arduino-based systems, LEDs, and sensors.

Before choosing materials, decide whether the piece is a single lightweight craft, a textile artwork, or a venue display. For a small static jellyfish, the balloon-and-paper method is straightforward, and fabric strips, ribbon, or tulle provide flowing tentacles. For textile sculpture, plan the form, stiffening, lining, and attachment points together. For a commissioned display, treat support, sightlines, movement, and installation requirements as part of the design from the start.
There are no comparable project prices or universal load limits established by these examples, so choose a method based on the actual object and installation context rather than assuming a craft construction will scale safely.
