Yes—Facebook refreshed its logo and wider visual identity beginning September 20, 2023. The update was deliberately subtle: the familiar blue icon and lowercase white “f” remained, while the blue became deeper, the icon’s proportions and spacing were refined, and the “Facebook” wordmark was redesigned in Facebook Sans.
If the app icon looked slightly darker rather than completely different, you may have noticed the refresh. It was a visual-identity update—not a new Meta logo or a major Facebook feature change.

Old Facebook logo vs. new Facebook logo
| What to compare | Earlier version | September 2023 refresh |
|---|---|---|
| App icon | Lighter, brighter blue with the previous “f” treatment. | Deeper, more saturated blue with subtle refinements to the “f” and icon proportions. |
| Wordmark | Earlier “Facebook” lettering. | Redesigned lettering using Facebook Sans. |
| Overall identity | Earlier Facebook visual system. | A broader refresh that also included an expanded palette and other visual elements. |
This comparison describes the reported visual differences, not exact color values. Facebook’s appearance can vary with app version, device, display settings and asset treatment.
The short version: the change is real, but it is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Contemporary coverage described the refreshed mark as difficult to spot at first glance. Coverage of Facebook’s September 2023 announcement placed the announcement and rollout around September 20–21, 2023.

What changed?
The blue became darker
The most noticeable change is the icon’s color. The refreshed Facebook blue is deeper and more saturated than the preceding version, creating stronger contrast between the blue field and the white letter.
Meta said the revised color was intended to create a bolder, more durable expression of the brand and improve visual accessibility and contrast. These are Meta’s stated aims; the available material does not establish an independently measured accessibility improvement.
The research does not establish an authoritative before-and-after HEX, RGB or Pantone comparison. Color can also appear different because of display calibration, color profiles, compression, settings or platform-specific icon treatments.

The lowercase “f” was subtly redrawn
Facebook kept its defining white lowercase “f,” but subtly adjusted the mark’s proportions, internal spacing and relationship to the blue background. Reports describe a flatter treatment and refinements intended to improve legibility at small sizes. The safest description is that the icon was refined—not replaced with a new symbol.
The “Facebook” wordmark changed too
The 2023 refresh also changed the wordmark. The “Facebook” lettering was redesigned using Meta’s custom Facebook Sans typeface, with the stated goals of improving legibility and creating a more consistent treatment across Facebook surfaces. Small typographic differences are easier to spot side by side than in a paragraph.
The update covered more than the logo
Meta presented the work as the first phase of a refreshed Facebook identity system. The wider system included an expanded palette anchored in Facebook blue and other visual elements, including reaction imagery. Meta described its goals as accessibility, consistency, exploration and connection across Facebook touchpoints. Social Media Today’s coverage and The Indian Express report discuss the broader refresh.

Why did Facebook change the logo?
Meta’s stated reasons centered on accessibility, contrast, legibility, consistency and a more flexible color system. It also described the refresh as a bolder and more enduring expression of the Facebook brand.
In practical terms, the changes updated familiar elements while preserving the recognizable lowercase “f.” That is an interpretation of the restrained design, not a separate claim about Meta’s motive. The available evidence does not establish that the logo was changed specifically to attract younger users.
Facebook did not change to the Meta logo
The Facebook app retains its own identity: the blue icon with the white lowercase “f” and, where appropriate, the Facebook wordmark. Meta is the parent company’s corporate brand. In 2019, the company introduced distinct corporate branding while continuing to use Facebook as the identity of its social network; see Meta’s 2019 company-brand announcement.

Inconsistent icons and screenshots do not necessarily indicate another redesign. Possible explanations include different app versions or rollout timing, cached icons, old screenshots, display settings, compression, platform-specific treatments, or regional and account-level interface experiments. Do not treat every darker icon found online as proof of a separate change; compare dated, official assets where possible.

What is the easiest difference to spot?
Look for the deeper blue in the app icon. The “f” was also subtly refined, and the wordmark was redesigned in Facebook Sans.
Did Facebook become Meta?
No. Meta is the parent company’s corporate brand; Facebook remains the name and identity of the social network.
Did the logo change affect Facebook’s features?
The reviewed coverage describes a visual-identity refresh and does not indicate that the logo update itself changed Facebook’s core functionality.
Bottom line
Facebook really did refresh its logo in September 2023, but it did not replace the iconic lowercase “f,” rename the app or turn Facebook into Meta. Look for the deeper blue, the subtly refined icon and the updated Facebook Sans wordmark. The changes were small enough to preserve a familiar identity.
