To photograph the northern lights tonight, check both near-term aurora activity and your local cloud and weather forecast; neither forecast guarantees a sighting. Choose a dark, safe place with an open view, and use a stable tripod for a long exposure. There is no universal camera setting: take a test frame and adjust for the aurora’s brightness and movement.
A quick go-or-no-go check
- Check the aurora forecast. NOAA’s aurora viewing guidance and its 30-minute forecast can help you judge near-term activity. Forecasts are tools, not promises.
- Check local clouds and weather separately. Clouds can hide an active aurora.
- Check darkness at your destination. Aurora occurs year-round, but summer daylight at high latitudes may make it impossible to see. Choose dates and hours with genuine darkness.
- Find a dark, open, accessible place. Get away from city lights where safe and legal. A clear northern horizon can help in the Northern Hemisphere, but aurora can appear across the sky.
- Plan to wait comfortably and safely. Conditions and timing can shift. Bring what you need to stay outside, and do not take risks with roads, weather, ice, or access for a photograph.
A strong activity forecast under cloud is not a useful viewing opportunity. A photograph can also show brighter color than your unaided eyes see, because the camera collects light during an exposure.

How to read the forecast
NOAA’s experimental tonight and tomorrow night forecast offers broad planning guidance, while the 30-minute forecast can help with near-term decisions. Neither tells you whether local skies will be clear or guarantees a display at your exact location. Check local weather as well.
| What to check | What it helps you judge | What it cannot promise |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora forecast | Whether activity may be favorable | A display at a particular time or location |
| Cloud and weather forecast | Whether the sky may be visible | Whether aurora will occur |
| Darkness and light pollution | Whether viewing conditions are suitable | Brightness or visibility of the aurora |
| Site access and horizon | Whether you can safely see an open area of sky | That activity will occur in that part of the sky |
NOAA describes Kp as an indicator of geomagnetic activity; it is not a local weather forecast or a guarantee of what you will see. Its scale runs from 0 to 9. NOAA also notes that a full moon diminishes the aurora’s apparent brightness, not its actual brightness.
March and September are generally favorable aurora-viewing months, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, but seasonal context is not a destination-specific forecast. Always check whether your chosen destination has enough darkness.

Where should you go?
Prioritize a safe, legal site with a clear view and little artificial light. An unobstructed northern horizon can help in the Northern Hemisphere, but do not assume the aurora will only appear north of you. Follow the sky and the current forecast, and choose a place where you can wait without blocking traffic or entering hazardous terrain.
- Confirm the site is accessible and safe in current conditions.
- Look for an open view of the sky and horizon.
- Reduce nearby artificial light where practical.
- Allow time to wait; activity and weather can change.
Tell someone where you are going if appropriate, dress for the conditions, and bring what you need to remain outside safely. Never compromise road, ice, or wilderness safety for a photograph.
What gear do you need?
A camera that allows long exposures and a stable tripod are useful. A night-sky lens is optional; it is not a requirement for seeing or photographing the aurora. Choose equipment you can use safely and comfortably in the conditions. A phone may also capture the scene, but its results will vary by device and conditions.

What camera settings should I use?
There is no universal combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO for the northern lights. The right exposure depends on the aurora’s brightness and movement, your camera and lens, and the result you want. Use a tripod, make a test exposure, and adjust while checking whether the aurora’s detail is becoming blurred.
- Set the camera securely on a stable tripod.
- Compose a frame with an open view of the sky; include a foreground if it adds context.
- Use a long exposure to collect light, then review the image.
- If the aurora’s movement is blurred, try a shorter exposure. If the image is too dark, adjust exposure and test again.
- Repeat as conditions change, rather than relying on one preset for the whole night.
The National Park Service’s Glacier Bay page shows a 30-second exposure as one example of night-sky photography, not a recommended setting for every camera or aurora. A stable tripod helps with long exposures, but longer is not automatically better when the aurora is moving.
Can a photograph look brighter than the aurora?
Yes. A camera collects light over the exposure, so a photograph can show brighter color than the unaided eye, including faint color that is difficult to see in person. A bright-looking image is not proof that the display appeared equally bright to the eye.

Planning a trip to see the northern lights
No forecast guarantees a display. When choosing dates and a destination, consider seasonal darkness, local weather, light pollution, safe access, and the chance to wait for conditions to change. A local guide may help with logistics, but cannot control space weather or cloud cover.
FAQ
Can I see the northern lights tonight?
Check NOAA’s near-term aurora guidance and your local cloud forecast, then confirm darkness and safe access at your location. These checks improve your decision, but cannot guarantee a sighting.
Where should I look for the aurora?
An open northern horizon can help in the Northern Hemisphere, but aurora can appear across the sky. Choose a dark, safe place with a wide view and keep watching the sky.

What camera settings should I use for northern lights?
There is no single best preset. Mount the camera on a stable tripod, take a long-exposure test frame, and adjust exposure based on brightness, movement, and the result you want.
Will my camera show more color than I can see?
It can. A long exposure collects light over time and may reveal color that is faint to the unaided eye.
