Yes—Google Photos lets eligible users describe photo edits in text or voice, then review the result and ask for refinements. The feature is experimental and regionally limited, so it is a convenient option for everyday edits, not a universal replacement for Photoshop’s professional creative workflow.

What is conversational editing in Google Photos?

Google announced conversational editing in Google Photos on August 20, 2025. In the redesigned editor, you can describe a change instead of first choosing a tool or adjusting sliders. Google’s examples include removing cars or reflections, restoring an old photo, changing a background, adding an item, and combining several requests. You can follow up with further instructions to refine the result.

Google calls the feature experimental and warns that it may produce unexpected or inaccurate results. Treat it as AI-assisted editing: inspect the image rather than assuming every requested change is precise.

Google Pixel 11 Pro - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
  1. Open the photo in Google Photos.
  2. Tap Edit, then Ask.
  3. Type what you want changed, or use voice input.
  4. Review the result. If needed, give a follow-up instruction.
  5. Save the result.

For example, you might ask to remove glare or a background distraction. Be specific about what should change, and check details such as faces, reflections, and visible text afterward.

Who can use it, and why might Ask Photos be missing?

The feature is not available everywhere. Google says Ask Photos is rolling out in selected countries and regions, and functionality can vary by location. Google introduced conversational editing first on Pixel 10 in the United States, with gradual Android and iOS rollout to follow. That launch announcement does not mean a Pixel 10 is required for everyone.

  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]

  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]

Google Photos Help lists setup requirements for editing: Face Groups must be turned on; you must opt in to both “Use Gemini in Photos” and “Ask Photos” in the app’s Gemini preferences; and location estimates must be enabled. If you do not see the feature or cannot opt in, Google says your account may not yet be eligible. Check current Google Photos settings and Help for your region rather than relying on the original launch announcement.

Google Photos, Gemini, and Photoshop compared

Option Workflow Best fit
Google Photos Ask for edits to a photo in your Photos library using text or voice; availability and eligibility apply. Convenient edits to personal photos and follow-up refinements.
Gemini app A separate workflow for editing uploaded images, such as changing backgrounds, replacing objects, or adding elements. Conversational experimentation with an image outside the Photos editor.
Adobe Photoshop A professional creative application with manual editing controls and its own AI features. Workflows that need detailed control or broader creative-app capabilities.

Google Photos editing and Gemini image editing are separate products with different interfaces and availability. Adobe and Google Cloud announced on October 28, 2025 that Google AI models would be available in Adobe apps, including Photoshop. That points to AI being integrated into creative workflows, not Photoshop being discontinued.

What to know before saving

  • Results may be inaccurate: Google labels Ask Photos experimental and cautions that results can be unexpected or inaccurate.
  • Check the whole image: Review faces, reflections, edges, shadows, and text, not just the area you asked to change.
  • Saving behavior can vary: Google’s Android editing guidance describes saving changes to the original or as a copy in applicable workflows. A copy cannot be undone through the original-edit revert path. For Ask Photos, follow the save options shown in your app; do not assume every workflow behaves the same way.
  • Understand provenance signals: Google has described C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos, as well as IPTC metadata on AI-edited images and SynthID for Reimagine edits. These provide provenance context; they do not establish that an image is truthful or resolve every authenticity question.

Is Google Photos replacing Photoshop?

No. Google Photos makes common edits approachable through natural-language requests, while Photoshop remains part of Adobe’s professional creative applications. Which is the better fit depends on whether you want a quick edit in your photo library or need the capabilities of a broader creative workflow. The research available here does not establish a general comparison of output quality, price, or speed.
