Igloo, also called Igloo Laser, is a distinctive Christmas font for Microsoft Word and Office. Its snow-capped letters make a festive headline stand out, especially on cards, gift tags and signs. It is a third-party font—not a standard Microsoft font or an official Microsoft recommendation—and must be installed on your computer before desktop Office apps can use it.

Why choose Igloo for a Christmas design?
Igloo has a nostalgic display style, with snow sitting across the tops of the letters. The effect is immediately seasonal and works well for short phrases such as “Merry Christmas,” a card title or a party sign. Office Watch featured Igloo/Igloo Laser as a Christmas font recommendation in an article updated December 23, 2022; that recommendation is a design preference, not an objective ranking. Where it works best
- Use it for large titles, greetings, gift tags, labels, posters and party signs.
- Keep paragraphs, instructions, addresses and other essential information in a plain, readable font.
- Check both uppercase and lowercase letters at the size you plan to print; novelty lettering can become hard to decipher when small or set in all caps.
A restrained serif or script may suit an elegant invitation better. For a long letter or worksheet, a standard readable typeface with a few snowflake or ornament graphics is often clearer than a novelty font throughout.

Find a trustworthy font file and check its license
Microsoft Word does not fetch a third-party font directly. You install the font through Windows or macOS, then supported desktop Office apps can use it. Look for a genuine .ttf (TrueType) or .otf (OpenType) file; if the download is a .zip, extract it first. Microsoft explains the supported formats and installation approach in its Word font instructions.
The 2022 Office Watch article mentions DaFont as a place to look, but a past mention does not establish that a particular listing is still available, authentic or licensed for your use. Check the exact download’s creator, family name and included license. “Free download” does not necessarily mean free for business use, products for sale, redistribution or embedding in an editable template. Install Igloo on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Download the font from a source you trust, then extract the archive if it is a
.zip. - Open the
.ttfor.otffile. In Windows Font Previewer, select Install. Alternatively, right-click the font file and choose Install; Install for all users may be available when you have the necessary permissions. - If you need to check whether Windows has it, open Settings > Personalization > Fonts.
- Close and reopen Word or the Office app you want to use, then look for Igloo, Igloo Laser or the family name shown by Windows.

Install it on macOS
- Download the font and extract the archive if it is a
.zip. - Double-click the
.ttfor.otffile to open it in Font Book. - Select Install, then close and reopen Word or the relevant Office app.
- Search the font menu for the installed family name.

Use the font in Word and other Office apps
After installation, select text and choose Igloo from the font menu, as you would with another installed font. A valid system font is generally available to desktop apps such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, but “Office” covers different platforms and app versions; do not assume identical support in web or mobile apps, older editions or managed work and school environments. Microsoft’s cloud-font guidance shows that availability can differ by platform and application.
For a card or flyer, set Igloo in a prominent title and use a conventional font for the details. Before printing, check punctuation, numbers, names and any accented or non-English characters you need. A font may look fine for “Merry Christmas” but lack glyphs required elsewhere in the document.

If Igloo does not appear in Word
- Make sure you installed the font file, not just downloaded or opened the
.ziparchive. - Check that the font appears in Windows Fonts or macOS Font Book. If it does not, install it again.
- Quit and relaunch Word; the app may need to refresh its font list.
- Search for the family name shown by the operating system. A font sold or listed under “Igloo” may appear as “Igloo Laser” or another name.
- Confirm that you installed the regular font rather than a similarly named 3D, preview or decorative companion file.
- Try the font in another desktop app, such as PowerPoint or a text editor, to determine whether the problem is system-wide or limited to Word.
- If the file seems damaged, remove it and install a fresh copy from a trusted source. On an employer- or school-managed device, ask the system administrator about font-installation restrictions.
- If you are using Word for the web, test in desktop Word. Third-party font behavior can differ between web and desktop apps.
Will the font look the same on someone else’s computer?
Not necessarily. Installing a font on your computer does not automatically put it on a recipient’s computer. If the recipient does not have it, Office may substitute another font, changing line breaks, page breaks, text-box sizes, table widths or alignment. Microsoft warns that non-standard fonts may not display identically on another computer. Microsoft’s custom-font guidance explains the issue.
- For a finished design that does not need editing: export it as a PDF and inspect the exported file. This is usually the simplest way to preserve the layout, though the result can depend on export and font-embedding behavior.
- For an editable Word file: recipients can install the font if its license permits you to share the font file. You can also investigate font embedding where your Office edition and the font license allow it.
- For consistent access across supported Office environments: consider a Microsoft cloud font or a widely available typeface. Cloud-font availability still depends on application and platform support; see Microsoft’s cloud-font information.
Choosing an alternative
There is no need to pick a font just because it looks the most elaborate. Match the style to the job, then test it at its intended size.

- Handwritten holiday lettering: A script can feel personal on greetings or invitations, but check that connected letters remain legible.
- Traditional serif display lettering: A restrained serif suits a more formal or classic card and can be easier to read than heavily decorated letters.
- Candy-cane or striped lettering: Reserve the pattern for a brief heading. The stripes can make longer words harder to read.
- Christmas symbols or dingbats: Use these for ornaments, trees, stars, snowflakes or borders, not as a replacement for ordinary text.
- Readable font plus graphics: For longer copy, keep the text plain and add festive artwork around it.
Whatever style you choose, check punctuation, numbers, currency signs and the language characters your design needs. A font’s appearance alone does not establish its character coverage or license.
Licensing matters for business and products for sale
Before using a downloaded font beyond personal work, read the license that comes with that exact file. Permissions may differ for personal and commercial use, business flyers, educational materials, logos, packaging, products for sale, attribution, redistribution and embedding in documents or templates. Do not assume that permission to download a font includes permission to distribute it to customers or collaborators.

Buying a font or using a marketplace does not remove the need to check its license. For one personal Word heading, a paid subscription or large bundle is usually unnecessary.
