Chroma key is the compositing method behind a presenter appearing over gameplay, an actor standing on another planet, or a lesson recorded inside a virtual classroom. The camera records a subject against a controlled color; software isolates that color, turns it transparent, and places the subject over a different image or video. The green fabric is only the capture surface—the convincing result comes from the matte, edge work, spill removal, and final composite.
What chroma key means
Chroma means color information, and keying means selecting pixels according to a criterion and converting the selection into a matte. In a chroma-key shot, the editor samples a relatively uniform background color, usually green or blue, and creates an alpha matte: a grayscale control image in which white is opaque, black is transparent, and gray represents partial transparency.

A green screen or blue screen is therefore a common application of chroma key, not a separate technology. Adobe describes the process as selecting a color range, making that area transparent, and compositing new imagery behind the subject (Adobe’s chroma-key overview).
Several terms describe the work around the key:
- Spill: reflected green or blue light contaminating skin, hair, clothing, or reflective objects.
- Rotoscoping: manually animating masks where keying cannot separate the subject reliably.
- Garbage matte: a rough mask that excludes unwanted parts of the frame before or alongside the key.
After Effects notes that a keyer can use any sufficiently consistent solid color; green and blue are simply the most common choices (Adobe After Effects keying documentation).

How the effect works, step by step
- Capture: the camera records the subject against a controlled backdrop color.
- Sample: the editor selects a representative area of the screen.
- Classify: the keyer calculates which pixels fall within the selected hue, saturation, and brightness range. It is not merely deleting every pixel that looks green.
- Build the matte: matching pixels receive low or zero alpha, while subject pixels remain opaque. Thresholds and softness create transitional values around hair, motion blur, and translucent material.
- Clean: holes, speckles, chatter, and uneven transparency are corrected with matte controls, masks, or additional keys.
- Despill: reflected screen color is reduced without destroying the subject’s natural color.
- Rotoscope difficult areas: hands, hair, reflections, transparent objects, and blurred edges may need animated masks.
- Composite: the foreground is placed over the replacement scene.
- Integrate: exposure, color temperature, perspective, focus, motion blur, grain, shadows, and camera movement are matched.
Inspect the matte in a black-and-white or “matte only” view before judging the finished composite. A background can hide defects that become obvious when the matte itself is displayed.
Why green is usually used—and when blue is better
Green is often convenient in digital-camera workflows because it is uncommon in skin and ordinary hair and typically produces a strong camera signal. A bright green screen can also be exposed strongly with comparatively modest lighting. These are production tendencies, not universal laws: sensor design, lens characteristics, lighting, wardrobe, and the replacement scene all matter.
Recommended Free Tools
| Consideration | Green screen | Blue screen |
|---|---|---|
| Typical advantage | Strong signal and common digital-production workflow | Can preserve fine light hair and suit darker scenes |
| Foreground conflicts | Green clothing, foliage, props, makeup, or reflections disappear into the key | Blue clothing, objects, and cool-toned set elements can conflict |
| Spill behavior | Green bounce can be conspicuous on skin and reflective surfaces | Blue spill may be less noticeable on some subjects, but still requires control |
| Choose it when | The subject contains little green and the screen can be lit evenly | Green elements, fine blond hair, or green contamination make separation cleaner |
Choose the color that creates the cleanest separation from the foreground. “Green is always better” is not a reliable rule; blue can be the better technical choice for a particular wardrobe, hairstyle, exposure, or final background.
How to shoot a clean green-screen plate
Build a complete, matte screen
Cover every part of the camera frame, including corners and areas into which the subject may move. Use a matte, non-reflective surface and remove wrinkles, folds, seams, bright hotspots, and visible color variation. Adobe warns that wrinkles create shadows and insufficient coverage creates extra masking (Adobe’s green-screen guidance). A small webcam panel can work for a head-and-shoulders shot; it is not enough for full-body movement or multiple people.

Separate subject and screen
Place the subject as far from the backdrop as the room permits. Elgato gives approximately 1–2 meters (3–6 feet) as a useful webcam starting point, while noting that lens angle, screen size, and available space determine the practical distance (Elgato’s distance guidance). Distance keeps the subject’s shadow off the screen and reduces colored bounce. Avoid glossy clothing, reflective surfaces, and translucent objects when possible, and never let the subject wear the key color.
Light in separate zones
- Screen lights: use broad, diffused sources aimed for even illumination.
- Subject lights: light the person for the intended scene rather than trying to make the screen light do both jobs.
- Back or rim light: add separation without creating a colored outline.
Adobe describes roughly 40–50% luminance as a practical screen-lighting target when monitored with a waveform; treat that as vendor guidance, not a mandatory standard (Adobe’s green-screen lighting guide). Check the screen for gradients and hotspots at the camera position.
Control the camera
- Use the highest practical resolution and least destructive compression, especially for hair and motion.
- Keep exposure and white balance consistent; disable automatic changes during a take.
- Choose a shutter speed appropriate to the movement. Excessive motion blur blends subject and screen colors.
- Avoid underexposure, crushed shadows, and heavy noise.
- Record an empty-screen clean plate and reference frames of the lighting when possible.
Higher resolution preserves edge detail but cannot repair spill, clipped exposure, severe shadows, or compression damage.
Keying in popular software
Adobe Premiere Pro: Ultra Key
- Select the foreground clip.
- Open the Effects panel and apply Ultra Key.
- Use the color picker to sample a representative screen area.
- Inspect the matte and refine Matte Generation.
- Use Matte Cleanup for choke, softness, and edge defects.
- Use Spill Suppression to reduce reflected screen color.
- Use Color Correction to integrate the foreground.
These control groups are documented in Adobe’s current Ultra Key workflow (Premiere Pro Ultra Key documentation). If parts of the screen remain opaque, sample another area or widen the acceptable range; if the subject disappears, narrow the tolerance. Badly uneven screens may require multiple keys, masks, or rotoscoping rather than one aggressive setting.

Adobe After Effects
After Effects supports keying effects including Keylight, Key Cleaner, and Advanced Spill Suppressor. A practical sequence is to create the initial key, apply Key Cleaner to recover edge detail, then use Advanced Spill Suppressor; Adobe recommends that order after a keying effect such as Keylight (Adobe keying-effects documentation). Track masks or mattes when the subject moves, and reserve roto for areas the keyer cannot solve.
DaVinci Resolve and Fusion
Blackmagic’s Fusion guide identifies the Delta Keyer as the primary green-screen tool. Spill can be removed inside Delta Keyer or with an additional Color Corrector node (DaVinci Resolve 20 Fusion Visual Effects guide). Resolve’s interface and edition features change, so check the documentation for the version you have installed through Blackmagic’s support pages (Blackmagic support).

- Add a Video Capture Device source.
- Right-click the source and choose Filters.
- Add an Effect Filter and select Chroma Key.
- Adjust the key color and filter controls, then place the source over a background scene.
This path is documented by Elgato (OBS chroma-key instructions). Live keying is immediate but less recoverable. A useful hybrid is to show the live key while recording an unkeyed camera feed for later repair.
Diagnosing a bad matte
| Visible symptom | Likely cause | Best first correction |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven transparency | Screen lighting varies | Relight the screen; use additional samples or masks |
| Subject partly disappears | Key range is too broad | Narrow tolerance and inspect matte-only view |
| Green outline | Spill or colored bounce | Increase distance, add controlled rim light, and despill cautiously |
| Flickering edge | Noise, compression, or changing exposure | Improve capture quality and stabilize exposure |
| Hair looks cut out | Over-aggressive contraction or cleanup | Restore edge softness and protect hair detail |
| Gray screen areas remain | Shadows or insufficient illumination | Separate screen lighting from subject lighting |
| Corners remain visible | Screen does not fill the frame | Crop or use a garbage matte |
| Moving subject leaves artifacts | Motion blur or tracking mismatch | Animate masks, roto, or motion-aware cleanup |
| Green clothing vanishes | Foreground shares the key color | Use blue or isolate the clothing separately |
Common matte defects have distinct appearances: holes are transparent gaps in the subject; chatter is a flickering boundary; crunchy edges result from excessive contraction; halos come from softness, spill, or background mismatch; and motion-blur loss occurs where foreground and screen colors mix.

Why a technically successful composite still looks fake
Removing the screen does not create realistic lighting or perspective. Check the finished shot for:
- Different light direction or color temperature between subject and background.
- Camera height, lens perspective, or framing that does not match.
- Foreground sharpness or depth of field inconsistent with the background.
- Missing contact shadows, incorrect shadow direction, or feet that do not meet the virtual floor.
- Background and subject moving differently.
- No reflected environmental color on the subject.
- Mismatched grain, compression, motion blur, or edge softness.
After the key is clean, match exposure, contrast, color, blur, grain, and motion; add believable shadows or reflections where the scene requires them.

Choosing the right approach
Physical chroma key
A real screen is controllable, repeatable, works offline, and supports detailed visual-effects work. It also demands space, lighting, setup, and cleanup; wrinkles, shadows, spill, and wardrobe conflicts can create substantial roto labor.
AI background removal
AI tools can be quick for talking heads, calls, and small spaces without a physical screen. Their results vary with hair, transparent objects, hands, fast motion, lighting, camera quality, software updates, and processing requirements, so they are less predictable for demanding composites.

Live versus post-production
Live keying suits streams, presentations, and broadcasts. Post-production preserves control over matte refinement, masks, spill suppression, roto, and integration. Recording a clean, unkeyed feed while monitoring a live key combines both advantages.
Match the setup to the job
- Video calls: AI removal or a small, evenly lit screen is usually sufficient.
- Streaming: OBS with a properly sized screen and separate lighting gives immediate results.
- YouTube: prioritize screen coverage, stable exposure, and a recorded clean source.
- Short films: allow room for subject separation, hair detail, camera movement, and post-production cleanup.
- Complex VFX: plan clean plates, tracking, roto, spill control, and integration from pre-production.
Hardware choices should follow coverage and movement. For example, Elgato’s Green Screen XL page listed a US price of $169.99 when crawled in August 2026; that date- and market-specific figure does not make the panel suitable for full-body or multi-person work (Elgato Green Screen XL). A narrower Elgato Green Screen listing showed approximately 148 × 180 cm and a UK price signal of £169.99 when crawled; verify current availability and price before buying (Elgato Green Screen).

The “magic” is a controlled pipeline: capture a clean separation, generate and inspect the matte, clean its edges, suppress spill, roto what the key cannot solve, and integrate the foreground with matching light, perspective, focus, motion, and grain. Green is a useful default—not a rule—and software cannot rescue careless lighting or an unsuitable screen.
