A felt gift card holder is a small envelope or wallet that turns a standard gift card into a reusable, personal present. Choose a simple ribbon-tuck envelope for one card, or a thicker snap wallet when you want room for several cards, cash, or a small keepsake. You can also make a basic version at home with felt, ribbon, and a few stitches.
Choose a format to match what you’re giving
Felt holders generally fall into three formats. Their shape and closure affect what they can carry, so check the finished dimensions and capacity before choosing or making one.

For a one-card presentation, a compact envelope is often enough. For repeated use as a card wallet, look for compartments and a secure closure rather than relying on a decorative flap alone.

Measure the card and any note you plan to include, then compare them with the holder’s usable inside space. The outside dimensions alone may not reveal how much fits, especially in a thick or lined wallet.
Pick felt and a closure for the intended use
Felt thickness
Thin craft felt is easy to cut and stitch for a lightweight one-card envelope. The listed reusable examples use 2 mm stitched wool felt or 3 mm soft or merino-wool felt. Thicker felt can make a holder feel more substantial, but it also takes up space inside; allow for that when sizing a pocket.

Closure
- Ribbon tuck: Simple to sew and decorative; best for a light, flat card.
- Button or snap: Helps keep a wallet or fuller envelope closed. A snap requires attaching hardware; a button can be sewn on with basic supplies.
- Open pocket: Quick to make, but offers less security if the holder will be carried around.
Personalization and reuse
Keep the design plain for a minimalist look, or personalize it with appliqué, embroidery, buttons, or lettering. Easy Crafty Pattern’s tutorial uses a 3 × 10-inch piece of felt and a 4-inch length of ribbon. Gather felt, ribbon or ric-rac, thread or embroidery floss, a ruler, scissors, fabric marker, pins, and a needle. A sewing machine is optional.

- Mark the felt: Measure and cut a 3 × 10-inch rectangle. Fold it to establish the pocket and flap, then mark the triangular flap shape with a fabric marker.
- Cut the flap: Cut along the marks to create the triangular end. Check that the folded pocket is large enough for your card before stitching.
- Position the ribbon: Place the 4-inch ribbon where it can wrap around the folded holder. Tuck the ribbon ends inside the felt layers so they are caught by the edge stitching.
- Pin and stitch: Pin the folded shape and sew around its edge with a running stitch or whip stitch. A machine can use a straight, zigzag, or pin stitch, as described in the tutorial.
- Finish and test: Trim loose threads, fold the ribbon over the flap, and test the fit with the intended card and note.
For a more personal finish, add appliqué or embroidery before closing the pocket, so the back of the decoration is hidden between layers. Buttons or lettering can also be added, provided they do not make the holder too bulky to close.

A downloadable pattern is practical if you want to make several holders or prefer a guided seasonal design. A finished wallet makes sense when you want compartments, a sturdier snap closure, or a ready-made accessory. For a quick handmade presentation, the ribbon-tuck envelope uses a small piece of felt and basic sewing supplies.
