Nesting seams means pressing adjoining seam allowances in opposite directions so their ridges meet when you place the pieces right sides together. That small ridge-to-ridge contact helps keep intersections aligned as you sew, improving point matching and block consistency. It is an alignment aid, not a guarantee: accurate cutting, a consistent seam allowance, and checking the finished intersection still matter.
What nesting seams does
At a seam intersection, the folded allowances from two adjoining pieces can be pressed in opposite directions. When you bring the pieces together, those folds butt against each other rather than lying on top of one another. The contact gives you a tactile register to align the seam lines before stitching.
That makes it easier to match points and intersections and helps rows and blocks come together consistently. The American Patchwork & Quilting editors explain that properly nested seams help seams line up, keep blocks more consistent, and make quilt-top assembly smoother (American Patchwork & Quilting).

How to nest seams
- Sew and press the units. For a row-based block such as a nine-patch, press the seam allowances in alternating rows in opposite directions.
- Place the rows right sides together. Offset them slightly so you can bring the corresponding seam intersections together.
- Slide the folds into contact. Feel for the seam ridges to butt against each other; that is the nested position.
- Pin if needed, then stitch. A pin placed diagonally through the intersection can add security, but the nested folds may provide enough registration without heavy pinning.
- Inspect the front. Check that the intersection or point landed where intended.
For diagonal units such as a pinwheel, follow the pattern’s pressing arrows. If it gives no direction, consider pressing open when several seams meet at a dense intersection.

Nesting versus pressing seams open
Neither approach is best for every quilt. Nesting relies on opposing folds to help register intersections; pressing open separates the allowances and can make a block flatter. Choose according to the pattern, fabric thickness, how many seams meet, and the quilting layout.
| Consideration | Nesting seams | Pressing seams open |
|---|---|---|
| Intersection alignment | Opposing ridges provide a physical alignment point. | No ridge-to-ridge register; matching may require more care. |
| Bulk | Opposing directions distribute allowance bulk across the intersection instead of stacking it on one side. | Can reduce bulk and make dense intersections flatter. |
| Pinning | The folds can help hold alignment and may reduce the need for heavy pinning. | May require more deliberate pinning or checking to keep intersections matched. |
| Fabric show-through | The cited sources identify shadowing through light fabrics as a consideration, but do not establish a universal advantage. | The cited sources identify shadowing through light fabrics as a consideration, but do not establish a universal advantage. |
| Best fit | Useful when accurate intersections and repeatable block assembly are priorities. | A sensible choice for bulky or dense intersections, or when a pattern specifies it. |
Pressing adjoining seams the same way can stack their allowances on one side and create a lump. Nesting distributes that bulk more evenly, while pressing open can reduce it further. The trade-off is that open seams lose the tactile registration that makes nesting convenient.

What nesting cannot fix
The contact between folds helps control alignment, but fabric can still shift while you sew. Carefully cut pieces, keep your seam allowance consistent, and inspect the intersection after stitching. Pin through the meeting point when the fabric or construction needs extra stability.
A quilting iron is useful for setting and pressing allowances in the planned directions. Diagonal quilting pins or fork pins can help secure a nested intersection, but they are optional aids rather than requirements.
