Figma announced three AI-assisted image-editing tools on December 10, 2025: Erase object, Isolate object, and Expand image. They let designers remove distractions, separate subjects, and extend an image’s background without leaving a Figma file.
That makes Figma more Photoshop-like for a narrow group of generative editing tasks—not a replacement for Photoshop’s full retouching, masking, compositing, color-management, and production toolset.

What Figma added
Figma’s new tools target a familiar interruption: place an image in a design, discover that it needs a small correction, open Photoshop or another editor, export the result, and import it again. The new workflow keeps those contained edits inside the design canvas.
Figma announced the tools for Figma Design and Figma Draw. The company describes them as AI-assisted editing capabilities rather than a general-purpose replacement for dedicated image software.
Erase object
Erase object uses a lasso selection to identify an object or person, removes it, and generates replacement background detail.

It is useful for cleaning up a product shot, removing an unwanted prop from a marketing image, or taking a distracting person out of a hero composition. The result can be good enough for a mockup, presentation, banner, or early campaign concept.

If the object casts a shadow, removing only the object may leave an implausible shadow behind.
Isolate object
Isolate object separates a selected subject from its background so it can be repositioned or edited independently. Figma highlights follow-up adjustments such as lighting, color, focus, blur, color correction, and shadow effects.
This is a practical shortcut for creating a product cutout, moving a person within a composition, or adjusting a product without changing the rest of the photograph. It is especially useful when the image is already sitting inside a landing-page mockup, presentation, or product-design file.

Isolation becomes less dependable around hair, fur, foliage, lace, smoke, glass, thin cables, motion blur, and semi-transparent edges. Use the result as a starting point rather than assuming it is a production-ready mask.
Expand image
Expand image extends an image beyond its original boundaries and generates content to fill the added area. It is designed for adapting an image to a different aspect ratio—for example, turning a square product image into a wider banner while keeping the subject visible.
According to Figma’s Workflow Lab guidance, users can expand the image by dragging the available blue handles. This is useful when a layout needs more horizontal or vertical space than the source image provides.
Expansion is layout adaptation, not guaranteed scene reconstruction. Generated areas may get perspective, shadows, text, logos, or repeated objects wrong. Results are more difficult to trust when the subject is close to the original edge or when the extension is much larger than the source image.

How to use the tools in Figma
- Select an image in Figma.
- Open Edit image.
- For removal or isolation, use the lasso to draw around the object or person.
- Choose Erase object to remove the selection, or Isolate object to separate it.
- For a wider or taller composition, choose Expand image and extend the image with the available handles.
- Inspect the result and make manual corrections or undo the edit if the generated content is unsuitable.
Figma’s interface can change, so the exact icon location or label may differ between product areas and future versions.

Figma’s announcement states that the initial availability in Figma Design and Figma Draw required a Full seat on a Professional, Organization, or Enterprise plan, with AI enabled. AI actions consume credits.
The same announcement also discusses access in FigJam, Slides, and Buzz beta with different seat qualifications, including Dev and Collab seats and View seats for Buzz. That language should not be read as proof that every product, plan, seat, or region had identical access at launch.

Figma has not established in the supplied sources a complete current matrix for regional availability, exact credit costs, monthly limits, image-size limits, or identical behavior across browser and desktop applications. Check the feature availability and AI-credit information shown in your own workspace before moving a high-volume workflow into Figma. The current Figma pricing page is the appropriate place to check plan details, but access can still depend on seat type and workspace settings.
Figma versus Photoshop
The comparison is strongest when made task by task:

So, is Figma now a Photoshop replacement? No, not broadly. It now overlaps with Photoshop’s AI-assisted object removal, subject isolation, and generative expansion features. That is meaningful for everyday design work, but it does not establish parity with Photoshop’s wider creative and production capabilities. Secondary coverage from APH Networks likewise frames the release as Photoshop-like in specific functions rather than as a replacement for Adobe’s broader toolset.
Best use cases
- Product mockups: isolate a product, move it within a composition, and adjust its presentation without leaving the file.
- Marketing banners: expand a square or portrait image to fit a wider design frame.
- Quick cleanup: remove an unwanted spoon, prop, person, or background distraction from a concept image.
- Responsive design: create more visual breathing room when the source image does not match the required aspect ratio.
- Collaborative review: let a team inspect and discuss the edited asset in the same shared Figma file.
Where a dedicated editor remains the better choice
Use Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Photopea, or another dedicated editor when the image itself is the finished product rather than one element in a design. That includes professional retouching, RAW development, complex masks, hair and fur, reflections, transparent materials, detailed compositing, calibrated color, print production, and work requiring pixel-level repeatability.
Dedicated tools are also preferable when a generated change could create a factual, legal, scientific, documentary, or brand-compliance problem. Do not treat an AI-generated fill as evidence that the reconstructed scene is accurate.
Quality-control checklist
- Keep an untouched copy of the original image.
- Inspect removed and isolated areas at 100% zoom.
- Look for halos, jagged edges, repeated textures, warped geometry, and leftover shadows.
- Check reflections, glass, water, hair, fur, thin cables, and transparent materials carefully.
- Verify that packaging, logos, interface text, and product details have not changed.
- For expansion, inspect every new corner and seam, especially around buildings and structured backgrounds.
- Try a smaller lasso or a smaller expansion if the first result fails.
- Move difficult cleanup to a dedicated editor instead of repeatedly accepting weak generated results.
Bottom line
Figma’s Erase object, Isolate object, and Expand image tools make common image corrections faster when the image is already part of a design. They reduce context switching for mockups, banners, presentations, and marketing concepts.
They do not turn Figma into Photoshop. Figma trades depth and manual control for speed, collaboration, and editing in context. Try Figma first when the goal is to make an image fit a design; keep a dedicated editor for final retouching, complex composites, strict color workflows, and any image whose factual or technical accuracy matters.
