Figma announced its AI image-editing tools on December 10, 2025. They let eligible users remove a selected object, extract a subject onto its own image layer, or generate content beyond an image’s borders—all within Figma. They can make routine layout edits more convenient, but they are not a proven replacement for a dedicated photo editor.
What Figma’s three AI image tools do
The tools address different editing jobs. Figma’s announcement introduced them as a way to handle common image edits in the same canvas as the design.

Erase object is not the same as removing an image’s background: it targets a selected area within the image. Expand image generates material outside the original edges; it does not recover authentic detail or increase the original photo’s resolution. Figma documents Boost resolution as a separate tool.
How to erase an object
Figma’s documented controls vary by product. Select an image, make a lasso selection around the unwanted object, then choose Erase:
- Figma Design or Figma Slides: Select the image, choose Select area in the secondary toolbar, draw around the object with the lasso, release the mouse, and choose Erase.
- FigJam: Select the image, open AI tools from the inline toolbar, choose Select area, lasso the object, then choose Erase.
- Figma Buzz: Select the image, choose Edit from the inline toolbar, select Select area, lasso the object, then choose Erase.
These paths come from Figma’s current image-editing instructions. Toolbar labels and availability can differ by product and may change.

How to isolate a subject
- Select the image and choose Select area.
- Lasso the object or person you want to keep.
- Choose Isolate.
Figma places the selection on a new image layer, so you can position that foreground subject separately from the original image. Use this when the subject should remain intact; Erase is for removing a selected area.

- Figma Design or Figma Slides: Select one or more images, open More in the secondary toolbar, and choose Expand. Drag the blue handles toward the area you want to generate, or choose a target aspect ratio from the dropdown. Select the blue checkmark to generate.
- FigJam: Select the image and use AI tools > Expand.
- Figma Buzz: Select the image and use Edit > Expand.
Expansion is intended to create a plausible continuation around the image for a different layout. It cannot guarantee accurate continuation of details such as text, logos, hands, faces, or product features. For a framing change that does not need new image content, an ordinary crop may be the better choice.
Who can access the tools?
Figma’s help documentation describes AI image editing as available on paid plans and requires edit access to the file. For Figma Design, AI tools require a Full seat. Access and toolbar placement vary across Figma Design, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Sites, and Figma Buzz; that does not mean every product exposes every tool in the same way. What the AI edits cost in credits
Figma uses AI credits for its AI features. Its credit table estimates 5–10 credits per Erase object image; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed fixed rate. Figma says costs can vary with the model, complexity, and optimization, and can change over time. Other AI operations have their own rates.
The following figures were listed for U.S. plans on Figma’s pricing page as of August 18, 2026. Seat prices and credit allowances may change; check Figma’s pricing page for current terms.

At the estimated rate of 5–10 credits per erase operation, a Professional Full seat’s 3,000 monthly credits would theoretically cover about 300–600 erase operations if used only for that feature. This is a calculation from Figma’s published figures, not a guaranteed allowance: other AI use draws on the same user’s credits. Figma says credits reset monthly, do not roll over, and cannot be transferred between users. Administrators can buy additional credits on eligible paid plans. When Figma is enough—and when to use another editor
Figma’s main advantage is workflow location: if an image already sits in a design file, a quick cleanup, subject extraction, or aspect-ratio adaptation can happen there without exporting to another application and importing the result back. That is useful for layout-oriented work and collaborative design, but convenience is not the same as professional photo-editing control.
- Figma is a practical fit when you need a quick edit in context, are preparing variants for different layouts, or want the asset and design work to stay together.
- A dedicated editor is a better fit for intricate masking around hair, fur, smoke, glass, or transparency; extensive layered retouching or compositing; RAW processing; print preparation; or batch work on high-resolution photos.
The available documentation does not establish that Figma’s results match Photoshop for complex retouching, masking, compositing, color management, or pixel-level control. Nor does it provide independent accuracy benchmarks across image types. Selection size and background complexity can affect generated results: a lasso that clips an object may leave an incomplete result, while an overly broad selection can alter nearby context. Repeating patterns, architectural lines, text, faces, logos, and product edges are particularly important to inspect rather than assume are preserved.
Figma warns that AI outputs may be misleading or wrong; treat generated edits as drafts to review, not authoritative results. Its guidance is at Use AI tools in Figma Design.

How to recover when an edit goes wrong
- Undo the result and retry with a lasso that is either more precise or gives the selected object enough surrounding context.
- Handle separate objects in smaller selections instead of removing several at once.
- If the foreground subject should remain, use Isolate rather than Erase.
- If you only need different framing, crop the image instead of generating new content.
- Keep an untouched original available before editing. For difficult edges or detailed cleanup, move the asset to a dedicated image editor.
- If an AI control is missing or unavailable, check file edit access, the applicable seat and plan, team AI settings, and remaining credits.
Is Figma a Photoshop or Canva replacement?
Not as a blanket claim. Figma’s case is strongest for design teams that already work in its collaborative canvas and want routine image edits beside the layout. Photoshop remains the more appropriate category of tool when the job depends on deep retouching and fine-grained image control; Canva is oriented toward template-led marketing and social publishing workflows. Those are different workflow priorities, not evidence that one product produces better results on every image.
For product and interface designers, Figma’s tools can reduce context switching on everyday assets. For demanding photo work, the available evidence does not support treating them as a full substitute for Photoshop or another dedicated editor.
Verdict
Figma’s Erase object, Isolate object, and Expand image tools make routine, layout-focused image edits more convenient when the asset is already in Figma. Access is plan- and seat-dependent, and erasing consumes metered AI credits. Use them for quick contextual edits, inspect generated content carefully, and keep a dedicated editor in the workflow when precision or advanced photographic control matters.
