Hotshot launched an early-preview text-to-video generator on August 20, 2024, producing short clips from written prompts. It was later reported that the public service stopped generating videos in March 2025. The current Hotshot website is a technology publication, not the original generator, so readers should treat Hotshot as a discontinued product rather than a tool they can sign up to use today.
What Hotshot launched
Hotshot was a startup founded in 2023 by Aakash Sastry, John Mullan, and Duncan Crawbuck. Its August 2024 release was an early preview of a text-to-video model, not a finished, mature production platform. The company described the model as a foundation for a broader consumer video product and positioned it alongside Runway, Luma, Pika, and OpenAI’s then-unreleased Sora. VentureBeat’s launch coverage and Hotshot’s announcement emphasized prompt alignment, consistency, and motion.
The basic idea was straightforward: describe a scene in natural language and have the model create a short moving image. Examples on Hotshot’s ACT 1 page ranged across animals, people, sports, food, interiors, fictional characters, and surreal events, including stylized, animated, and cinematic scenes. Those examples show the kinds of prompts the company wanted to support; they do not establish that every prompt worked reliably or that every depicted person or copyrighted character was permitted. What the public beta could generate
Specifications varied depending on whether a source described the model’s technical capability or the public beta experience. The most useful distinction is between a technical maximum and what users were commonly reported to receive:

The U.S. App Store listing described an iPhone app requiring iOS 15.0 or later, with five-second, 720p clips. It also showed historical in-app purchase listings, including Hotshot Standard at $29.99 and Hotshot Plus at $99.99. How Hotshot said it built the model
Hotshot’s technical account described a four-engineer team that spent roughly four months developing the model, trained on about 600 million video clips, and used thousands of GPUs. - Video captioner: Hotshot said it built a captioner intended to describe actions, everyday language, and common knowledge. For video generation, captions need to communicate not only which objects appear, but what they do and how a scene changes over time.
- Video autoencoder: The company described a custom autoencoder that compressed video spatially and temporally, making the data more efficient to process during training.
How good were the results?
Hotshot said its generations were preferred to other publicly available text-to-video systems about 70% of the time in its own evaluations. That is a company-reported preference result, not an independent benchmark or a general finding that Hotshot was better than Runway or Luma. The announcement does not establish enough detail to interpret the figure as a production-quality ranking: readers would need to know the prompt sample, model versions, equivalent settings, whether evaluators were blind, and what qualities they scored. VentureBeat’s hands-on test used a prompt about a unicorn riding through Paris. The publication found the result promising but imperfect and said Hotshot then trailed some competitors in quality, detail, and resolution. That is useful qualitative evidence, but one editorial prompt is not a controlled comparison across different tasks. VentureBeat’s test and coverage
As with short-form video generators generally, a successful-looking demonstration does not guarantee reliable results for a particular brief. A model may capture the broad scene while missing the requested action; a face, outfit, logo, or character can change between frames; and hands, limbs, text, physics, or object interactions can look wrong. A five- or ten-second shot is also not a complete editing and production workflow. For practical work, prompt adherence, temporal consistency, motion, controls, iteration cost, rights, privacy, moderation, and service reliability all matter alongside visual appeal.

What the historical user experience was like
Launch-period use was described as a simple prompt-to-video flow: visit Hotshot’s site, enter a prompt, submit it, then download or share the result. This is a historical description, not a working sign-up guide. Launch coverage reported free access, no watermark, and two generations per day, but those details do not establish commercial licensing, privacy terms, or permanent storage of generated clips. What happened to Hotshot?
Later coverage reported that Hotshot stopped accepting new video generations on March 14, 2025, and gave users until March 30, 2025, to download existing creations. That shutdown timeline comes from Perfect Corp.’s later coverage; a currently accessible first-party shutdown notice is not established here, so treat those exact dates as reported rather than as a confirmed company announcement.
As of the August 18, 2026 snapshot, Hotshot’s homepage presents a general technology publication covering topics such as AI tools, gadgets, smart-home subjects, and how-to guides, rather than the original consumer video generator. Its privacy policy likewise sits within that current publication. Do not assume a page or app using the Hotshot name restores the original service; verify the operator, current terms, and actual generation capability before providing payment or personal material.

The available evidence does not establish that xAI’s current video tools are the same model as Hotshot. xAI documents video generation and editing through its video-generation documentation and has announced Grok Imagine Video 1.5. Those are relevant products to consider, not proof of a direct technical or corporate continuation of Hotshot.
Which alternatives to consider
There is no evidence-based single “best” replacement for every Hotshot user. Choose based on whether you need a quick short clip, a broader production interface, cinematic experimentation, or API access. Product lineups, access, regional availability, pricing, credits, rights, and privacy terms can change; check the provider’s current details before committing.

Before using any generator for client work, advertising, or monetized publishing, check output resolution and duration, credit limits and expiration, watermark rules, commercial-use terms, refund conditions, and whether prompts or uploaded faces, images, and videos are retained or used for training. A free tier or watermark-free export alone does not answer those questions.
