First Deadpool Comic Cover Art Was Offered at $7.5 Million—Sale Status Unresolved

The $7.5 million figure for Rob Liefeld’s original New Mutants No. 98 cover was a 2024 asking price—not a confirmed sale. Here’s what collectors should know about the art, Deadpool’s first appearance, and the unresolved status.

Heritage Auctions announced on August 5, 2024 that Rob Liefeld’s original cover artwork for Marvel’s New Mutants No. 98 was being offered for an owner-set $7.5 million. That figure was an asking price, not a confirmed sale price. Heritage said a sale at that amount would set a record for the most valuable piece of original comic art ever sold.

What the $7.5 million offer covered

The object was Liefeld’s unique original cover art for the 1991 Marvel issue New Mutants No. 98. It was not a printed copy of the comic. Heritage’s August 5, 2024 announcement described the owner’s requested price as $7.5 million and made any record claim conditional: the work would become the most valuable original comic book art ever sold only if it sold at that price.

That distinction matters. An asking price expresses what an owner wants; it does not establish what a buyer ultimately paid. The announcement did not report a completed transaction.

Why New Mutants No. 98 matters to Deadpool collectors

Heritage identifies New Mutants No. 98 as a 1991 Marvel issue and Deadpool’s first appearance. Liefeld’s cover is therefore tied to the character’s comic-book debut and to a recognizable piece of 1990s Marvel history.

Heritage co-chairman Jim Halperin told Gizmodo that he considered the work “the most important piece of comic book art from the 1990s.” That is Halperin’s opinion, not an independently verified ranking. The anonymous owner, also quoted by Gizmodo, said, “The time is right.”

Original cover art versus a printed comic copy

Collectors often use “the New Mutants 98” to mean either the original artwork or a copy of the published issue. They are different collectibles with different markets.

Object What it is What the 2024 figure means
Original cover art The one-of-a-kind Rob Liefeld artwork used for the cover of New Mutants No. 98. Heritage announced an owner-set $7.5 million asking price on August 5, 2024; no completed sale price was established in the cited announcement.
Printed comic copy A physical edition of the 1991 Marvel comic, with value affected by condition, grading, edition or variant, and sale date. Prices for copies do not establish the value or sale status of the original cover art.

A graded copy can be an accessible way to own Deadpool’s first appearance, but it does not confer ownership of the original cover drawing.

Would it have been the most expensive comic art ever sold?

Heritage’s wording was explicitly hypothetical. Its claim was that a sale at $7.5 million would make the New Mutants No. 98 cover the single most valuable piece of original comic book art ever sold. Until a transaction is documented, the statement remains a conditional record claim rather than a sales result.

What is known about the artwork’s later status

The cited sources establish the August 2024 offering and its asking price, but they do not establish whether the artwork later sold, was withdrawn, or remained available. Accordingly, $7.5 million should be described as the announced 2024 asking price, not as a current listing price or a realized valuation.

What collectors should verify

  • Confirm that a listing concerns the unique original cover art rather than a printed New Mutants No. 98.
  • For a comic copy, check the edition or variant, grading company and grade, restoration status, and sale date.
  • For original art, request documented provenance, authentication, ownership history, and the terms of any auction or private sale.
  • Treat a seller’s asking price as an offer, not evidence of market value, until a completed sale is independently documented.

The Bottom Line

The $7.5 million figure was Heritage Auctions’ owner-set asking price, announced August 5, 2024, for Rob Liefeld’s original New Mutants No. 98 cover—the comic associated with Deadpool’s first appearance. Heritage’s record claim depended on a sale at that price, and the sources cited here do not establish what happened afterward.
