Affinity is the strongest free desktop replacement for Photoshop in 2026. Photopea is the better choice when you need to open a PSD immediately in a browser, GIMP is the best open-source option, Krita is the specialist pick for painting, and Paint.NET is the fastest choice for simple Windows edits.
“Free” does not mean the same thing in every case. GIMP and Krita are free and open source; Photopea is a browser service; Affinity is proprietary software that Canva currently offers free with a Canva account; and Paint.NET is a free Windows application. None replaces every part of Photoshop, so the right choice depends on whether you edit photographs, build layered composites, paint, or prepare design files.

| App | Best for | Platforms | PSD support | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Affinity | Professional desktop editing, compositing and design | Mac, Windows; iPad listed as coming soon | Supports PSD, but preservation should be checked file by file | Requires a free Canva account for new users; current activation and offline rules should be verified |
| Photopea | Quick PSD editing and no-install workflows | Web browser | PSD is its main format; it opens and saves PSD files | Large files depend heavily on browser memory and hardware |
| GIMP | Open-source raster editing, Linux and scripting | Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and others | Import and export support, with compatibility varying by feature | Steeper learning curve and a less Photoshop-like workflow |
| Krita | Digital painting, illustration, comics and animation | Desktop platforms | Useful for some layered files, but not its central strength | Not designed primarily for photo retouching or image cataloguing |
| Paint.NET | Fast, simple edits on Windows | Windows | More limited than the leading alternatives | Windows-only and not intended for complex professional production |

How to choose a Photoshop alternative
A Photoshop replacement can mean four different things:
#1 Best Overall
- Wacom Intuos Small Graphics Drawing Tablet: Enjoy industry leading tablet performance in superior control and precision with Wacom's EMR, battery free technology that feels like pen on paper
- Works With All Software: Wacom Intuos tablet can be used in any software program to explore new facets of digital creativity; draw, paint, edit photos/videos, create designs, and mark up documents
- What the Professionals Use: Wacom's industry leading pen technology and pen to paper feeling makes it the preferred drawing tablet of professional graphic designers
- Software and Training Included: Only Wacom gives you software with every purchase. Register your Intuos tablet and gain access to some of the best creative software and Wacom's online training
- Wacom is the Global Leader in Drawing Tablet and Displays: For over 40 years in pen display and tablet market, you can trust that Wacom to help you bring your vision, ideas and creativity to life
- Photo correction: cropping, exposure, colour, sharpening, noise reduction and healing.
- Layered compositing: selections, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, text and effects.
- Digital art: brushes, pen pressure, stabilisation, custom brush libraries and animation.
- Design production: vector objects, typography, page layout, colour management and export.
No free application is equally strong in all four jobs. Krita should not be judged as a failed photo editor when its brush engine is the reason artists choose it. Paint.NET should not be treated as a professional compositing suite when its advantage is speed and simplicity.
1. Affinity: best overall desktop replacement
Canva says the new Affinity combines photo editing, vector design and page layout in one application, is free for everyone, and supports formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF and IDML. The current announcement lists Mac and Windows availability, with iPad coming soon. New users can download it with a free Canva account.
That makes Affinity the closest general-purpose desktop alternative for many former Photoshop users. It is the strongest choice when you need a polished application for photographs, layered composites and design work rather than a single-purpose painting tool.
Choose Affinity if you need
- A modern desktop workflow instead of a browser tab.
- Raster editing and vector or layout tools in the same application.
- Large layered projects and professional export options.
- An alternative to Adobe’s subscription model.
What to check before moving a Photoshop workflow
PSD support is not automatically identical to Photoshop support. Test Smart Objects, Smart Filters, adjustment layers, masks, layer effects, vector shapes, blend modes and fonts. A file can open successfully while losing editability or rendering differently.
Also check whether the current release works without an internet connection after activation, whether a Canva account is required at every stage, and whether any AI or cloud-connected features have separate limits. Affinity is proprietary software within Canva’s ecosystem, not open-source software.
Verdict: Start with Affinity if you want the broadest free desktop replacement and do not need Linux support or a completely vendor-independent ownership model.

2. Photopea: best browser-based Photoshop substitute
Photopea is the most convenient answer to “I have a PSD right now—how can I open it for free?” It runs in a browser, requires no installation and is designed around PSD editing. Its site lists support for layers, masks, layer styles, Smart Objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths and numerous raster, vector and RAW formats.
Photopea is particularly useful on Chromebooks, school or library computers, shared machines and computers where you cannot install software. Its interface and terminology are also familiar to many Photoshop users.
PSD and privacy considerations
Photopea says files are processed locally on the device and do not leave it. That is a useful distinction from a service that routinely uploads images, but it is still a statement from the provider rather than an independent privacy audit. Treat browser storage, extensions, shared computers and account security as separate considerations.
Opening and saving a PSD is not proof that every Photoshop feature survives round-tripping. Check Smart Objects, text, masks, effects, colour profiles and unusual blend modes. Fonts unavailable on the current computer can also change the result.

Where Photopea falls short
- Very large canvases and layered PSDs can be constrained by browser memory.
- A closed or suspended browser tab may not provide the same recovery options as a desktop application.
- Performance varies with the computer, browser and available RAM.
- It is not a replacement for a full offline desktop workflow.
- Opening RAW files does not make it a Lightroom-style catalogue manager.
Photopea lists support for formats including DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RW2, RAF, ORF and FFF, with controls such as exposure, colour balance, contrast, highlights and shadows. That is useful for editing an individual RAW file, but it does not imply batch development, camera-profile coverage, metadata management or photo-library organisation.
Verdict: Use Photopea first for occasional PSD work, quick edits and no-install access. Choose a desktop editor for huge files or dependable offline projects.

3. GIMP: best open-source Photoshop alternative
GIMP is the strongest choice for users who want free and open-source software, Linux support, scripting, plugins and long-term control over their tools. It supports photo manipulation, original artwork, graphic design, colour management and customisation across GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows and other systems.
The GIMP website displayed version 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, when the supplied research was checked. Its downloads page displayed macOS 11 Big Sur or newer and Windows 10 build 20348 or newer for the relevant downloads. Verify current requirements before installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Why GIMP remains important
- It is genuinely open source rather than merely free to download.
- It works well for offline editing.
- It supports plugins, scripts and batch-oriented workflows.
- It is available on Linux as well as Windows and macOS.
- It can handle advanced raster editing without a subscription.
The trade-off
GIMP is not simply Photoshop with the price removed. Its interface, shortcuts, defaults and terminology differ. Some workflows that feel immediate in Photoshop require configuration, a plugin or a different method in GIMP. PSD compatibility also varies by feature, so test client files rather than assuming a perfect exchange.
GIMP is less suitable as a page-layout application or a complete vector-design replacement. It is also not a Lightroom-style catalogue and RAW-management system.
Verdict: Choose GIMP when open source, Linux, scripting and software independence matter more than Photoshop-like familiarity.
4. Krita: best for digital painting and illustration
Krita is a free, open-source professional painting application rather than a conventional photo editor. Its strengths include brush variety, layers, drawing assistants, stabilisers, animation tools, plugins and resource libraries.

For illustrators, concept artists, comic creators and tablet users, Krita can be a better tool than Photoshop because its interface and features are organised around making marks on a canvas. Judge it by brush response, pen pressure, stabilisation, canvas rotation, zoom, brush import, layer handling and animation—not by whether it copies Photoshop’s retouching workflow.
The Krita site displayed 5.3.3 and 6.0.3 releases on July 29, 2026. Identify the release line used for your operating system because platform availability and stability preferences can differ.
Where Krita is weaker
- It is not primarily a photo-library or RAW-catalogue application.
- Routine photographic retouching may require more manual setup.
- PSD interoperability should be tested before using it in a production exchange.
- Users seeking Photoshop-style commercial workflows may need to customise the interface.
Verdict: Choose Krita for painting, illustration, comics and animation. Do not select it merely because you want the closest Photoshop interface for photo retouching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Paint.NET: best simple Windows editor
Paint.NET is the low-friction option for Windows users who need layers, resizing, basic retouching, screenshots, thumbnails and simple composites without learning a large professional suite.
Its strengths are an approachable interface, unlimited undo, effects, layers, plugins and a large community of tutorials. The official site displayed Paint.NET 5.1.12, released March 8, 2026. The download page listed Windows 10 version 21H2 or newer, Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022, along with 64-bit CPU and Direct3D 11 requirements for the current release.
The direct download is free; the official site also offers a Microsoft Store purchase as a way to support development. Paint.NET is proprietary and Windows-only, so it is not a substitute for GIMP if you need Linux or macOS.

Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. What Paint.NET cannot replace
- Complex professional compositing.
- Advanced colour-management workflows.
- Large Photoshop production files with extensive feature preservation.
- Full vector design, page layout or digital-painting systems.
Verdict: Install Paint.NET when speed and simplicity matter more than depth. It is excellent for everyday Windows editing, but it is not a full Photoshop replacement.
PSD compatibility: the test that matters most
“Supports PSD” is too vague to be useful. A meaningful compatibility check should open a layered PSD containing text, masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, layer effects, Smart Objects, vector shapes and embedded assets. Then compare the original and reopened file after editing and saving.
Record whether:
- Layer names and order remain intact.
- Text remains editable and fonts are preserved.
- Masks and adjustment layers still work.
- Blend modes produce the same result.
- Layer effects survive.
- Smart Objects remain editable or are rasterised.
- Vector shapes remain vectors.
- Colour profiles and export colours change.
- The saved PSD reopens correctly in Photoshop or Photopea.
Even the best result is feature-specific. Say that an application opens and exports PSD files, not that it offers perfect Photoshop compatibility, unless every relevant feature has been verified.
RAW files, photo management and colour work
Opening one RAW file is not the same as replacing Lightroom. A photographer who needs a library should separately evaluate cataloguing, ratings, keywords, metadata, camera profiles, batch development, non-destructive edits, export presets and sidecar files.
For that workflow, pair an editor with a dedicated application such as darktable or RawTherapee. Useful combinations include Photopea with darktable for PSD editing plus cataloguing, or Affinity with darktable for a broader desktop workflow.
Free does not always mean the same thing
| Software | Free model | Open source? | Account or service consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affinity | Free proprietary desktop application according to Canva’s current announcement | No | New users need a free Canva account; verify activation and connected features |
| Photopea | Free web editor with a service and advertising model | No | Browser, ads and online-service considerations apply |
| GIMP | Free software | Yes | No Adobe-style subscription is required |
| Krita | Free software | Yes | No Adobe-style subscription is required |
| Paint.NET | Free direct download; Store purchase is optional support | No | Windows-only |
Photoshop itself remains subscription-only. Adobe’s US page showed US$22.99 per month when billed annually, or US$19.99 per month through the Photography plan, on August 18, 2026. Adobe also lists a seven-day trial that converts to a paid membership unless cancelled. Prices and plan availability vary by country and can change.

Useful free combinations
- Photopea + darktable: browser-based PSD editing plus RAW cataloguing.
- GIMP + Krita: general raster manipulation plus dedicated painting.
- Affinity + darktable: professional desktop editing plus photo management.
- Paint.NET + Photopea: fast local edits plus occasional PSD work.
- GIMP + Inkscape + Scribus: open-source raster, vector and page-layout tools.
What these alternatives do not replace
Photoshop may still be the correct choice if you depend on Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom integration, Photoshop-specific plugins, cloud documents, team libraries, Adobe’s generative tools, agency workflows or guaranteed compatibility with client files.
Free software can match or exceed Photoshop in particular tasks, especially open-source editing or digital painting. It cannot promise the same ecosystem, support structure or feature-for-feature interchangeability. Keep the original Photoshop workflow when a client or employer requires it, and use a free alternative for work that does not depend on those features.
